Was about time i got around to making a CAI box for the car ... and had a couple of hour spare today ...

went upto the local mitre 10 and bought a sheet of 600 x 600 aluminium, this was about twice what i actually needed. They were out of pop rivet guns, so had to use nuts and bolts with spring washers :P

anyway, roughly measured what i needed, cut out a cardboard box to the rough size, tried it, trimmed it a bit, repeated this a few times, and came up with a good size, transposed this onto the ali sheet, and cut out, the top was just made by roughly cutting out what i needed, then placing it on top of the vertical sheet now in the car, and drew around it with a marker pen, cut it out, then cut lots of small cuts along the edge so it could fold over and bolt upto the ali part easily.

Bent the lip of the top, drilled holes, bolted up, and sprayed with some heat resistant paint, slotted it all in place, and used the headlight mount to bolt it down ..

i cut some fuel hose long its axis and slotted it along the bottom, this is just to stop the ali sheet scratching the inner wheel arch.

The bottom of the vertical part os bent in slightly to avoid the pipe going down into the FMIC from the turbo. As i have an FMIC the pipe that the std intercooler would return to is not there, and so is basically a 2.8" hole to behind the indicators (its s series 2) so i have a nice cool air feed to the inside the box ..

This last pic is a view from the front nearside, behind the indicators (cameria is in the hole under the indicator) you can see the hole that feeds the cai.

all in all took about 3 hours, will get around to putting a window in the top at some point when i can be arsed.

No idea if its made any difference to performance, but it certainly cant hurt ...

Basically it will be a box extending from just under the guard lip on the right covering all the filter and cooler piping, and drop straight to the floor next to cooler piping and will be all polsiehd and look fancy etc aswell as serving its purpose. Everyone who is interested please PM me and tell me, as i have to do these in my free time at work (lunch time, friday arvo's) so i don't want to be wasting time. It will probably work out around $80 each plus shipping? Sound good? Polished alloy, ready to fit... Let me kno, i'll do mine in the next few days n post pics then you can see. :P

Hi YBSLO4, just wondering how you ended up going with the new box?

Wouldn't mind seeing how it looks and if you think it made things better.

PM me if you like.

Cheers!

original airbox was too restrictive with the panel filter.

installed a pod filter a while ago to my NA it was an improvement, but it was just sitting there and seemed very sluggish due to the heat from the engine.

I then decided to make a heatshield to try and make the most of it.

template was made with cardboard - made about 3-4 of these, continously trial fitting.

transferred the cardboard template onto aluminum sheeting

mounted brackets to hold the sheeting in place

insulation foil on both sides to keep engine heat away from pod.

I have yet to do a temperature check, but after a fairly spirited drive for 20mins, and placing hands on either side of the heatshield - a large difference in temperature was apparent.

This was done on a under ~$30 budget - i took my time in doing it - but can be done in a few hours.

End Result:

Hi Guys,

S2.jpg

I currently planning on making a cold air induction system for my 32 gtr.

I envisaged buying a standard air intake snorkel (as my car came without one) feeding that into a cold air box as well as trying to fabricate some sort of wide tubing running into a fiberglass funnel to fit the box through the awkward oval hole shown below:

snork.jpg

I can only find R32 gtst snorkels so how do they differ, if at all, and does anyone know if an the gtst snorkel will fit the GTR mounting holes etc?

Also, I’d imagine that cutting sheet metal is a BIG NO NO incase of defects etc, though the hole shown is a tad small, what do you guys think.. and what are other peoples methods of feeding air in without cutting metal or drilling holes??

Help appreciated, cheers.

Hi mate,

Just a question, I know you said you used aluminum sheeting, it looks quiet thick though, is that all you used? I'm just getting ideas at the moment.

Cheers!

its an aluminum sheet, then on both sides stuck with a foam layered foil type thing (courtesy of 51jay) - can be picked up @ clark rubber or something similar.

does the job, keeps the hot air out, and limited to the heat shield.

engine bay || foil/foam || aluminum sheet || foam/foil || pod filter

^^^^^layers are pretty much like this ^^^^^

I've used 2mm Ally but I think the benefit comes not from the aluminium but the foam foil layer.

Eug - to take your example, I have this setup :

engine bay || foil/foam || aluminum sheet || pod filter

^^^^^layers are pretty much like this ^^^^^

without a scond layer or foam/foil and according to my temp gauges, it keeps the intake temp within 2-3 degrees on ambient temp when cruising.

Thanks mate!

I'm in the process now of cutting out a template and getting the right fit.

Thanks again!

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
