Sounds more like that it is spinning when it shouldn't. This is because it's a viscous clutch fan, and when it fails, it locks up.

If you start the car when it is dead cold, it should spin up and then come off after a minute.

Or, to test whether it has seized or not, tomorrow morning, open the hood, and try to spin the fan with your hand (car off!). If it resists a LOT, then it's seized and you need to buy a new one. Changing it is pretty easy though (4 bolts), and if you wiggle it, just a little bit, (hehe) it should slide past the radiator shroud.

can it still eb driven until my new fan arrives? and where to get a new one? how much?

You can drive it as much as you like. It will make a lot of noise from the air being pushed, and it will still cool everything (even when it DOESN'T need it).

New fan I think is under $200... Call Nissan?

the clutch on it has FAILED dude. this means what it does next is anybody's guess. which means it may loosen at any moment and start free spinning, i.e. not cool your motor.

if you're going to spend $200 on a clutch fan, why not upgrade to an electric thermofan for a bit more. i'll be doing that mod soon.

Don't panic....... Pull the fan & clutch off, if you're in Sydney, go see the boys at Just Jap in Kirrawee or SSS in Giraween ( or the like ) and grab a good condition second hand clutch off them !! Just make sure it bolts up to YOUR fan and looks the same ( but better than yours ) and away you go !!!

I was a bit suss on my clutch ( fan ) and scored an almost new clutch off an R34 RB25NEO that fit perfectly in my R32 RB20DET fan and works great !!

    • Seems like a decent result for a modded JZX110. They are bulky in comparison to the 100 and 90 models (which I'd prefer myself) but they are getting very few and far between here in JP these days. Thanks for the detailed review and the import process into the UK. I also have a car which I'm hoping to export from Japan at some stage so it's good to know if someone from the UK was interested in it. By the way the corrosion underneath is par for the course for cars which were located in/near the mountains or along the Japan sea coastline. They get huge amounts of snow every winter and the sodium chloride is used on the roads. Many cars have some kind of rubber like treatment underneath but they tend to limit it to the wheel arches underbody and fuel tank. Suspension arms and sub-frames will have similar corrosion to your JZX110 which is a common sight. See it all the time and car dealers here generally don't even mention it unless asked.
    • If the sound goes away when you clutch in, the 1.5/2 way diffs are just shit, and you are a normal person. The diff is likely "fine" but driving at anything under 30kmh is a violent horrible experience. It would be exaggerated with solid diff bushings and subframe bushings if you have those.
