Hi guys

Since i got my liner its been runnin really rich and I cant seem to find out why. as it sits it has a pod filter 3inch cat back exhurst, turbosmart bov and a fmic. when i got the car it was completely stock and a mate told me when he drove behind me and i gave it a small stab he could smell fuel badly, since putting the exhurst on you can hear it back firing on deceleration, but only when you push it just on boost (so 0 on the boost guage). if you push it right into boost it doesnt backfire on deceleration. Everyone Ive talk to rekons its the bov but the exhurst was the first mod i did and it was doin it back then, the bov was only installed 2mths ago

Has anyone got any ideas on where my problem could lie or have some thing for me to try

Cheers

Apexi BOV - where the problem begins and ends (usually)

1) Put the stock on back on and you'll have no backfiring issues, or it will at least reduce it based on the below other options

2) Check the timing the car is running

3) Also check the plugs, could be an issue there.

4) And last of all check the fuel pressure, you might have a faulty fuel reg

There are my top 4 for the day

It backfired with the stock bov its had new plugs put in 20,000kms ago (platniums - not crappy ones), its just had the timing belt replaced 3000kms ago.

How do i go about checkin the fuel pressure.

thanks so far guys - keep the suggestions comin

IMO platinums are crappy ones :woot:

Just because you spend $120 on plugs, doesnt mean they work.

I will only ever use coppers as with platinums, you can be fooled into believing they wont foul, and they can well before 100,000km's or whatever they are supposed to last for

If the timing belt was changed... then i'd start there.

Fuel pressure, you need a gauge to measure it off the reg, a workshop should be able to help ya out easily and quickly.

20mins tops if you pre-arrange it with them

I will get my mechanic to recheck the timing as for the plugs just bout everyone i spoke to (including my mechanic) told me to go with the platniums and now i think about it they were only done 2mths ago so theyre only done about 10,000kms max. However it has been running too rich way before the belts and plugs where done and the old plugs where put in when i picked the car up from the yard (i demanded the reciepts for all the work that was done to it so im certain they were changed on compliance) and they werent that bad when i took them out to put the platinums in.

I will give my mechanic a call today to see if he can check the fuel pressure

RPR33 - im getting anywhere around 300kms out of a tank (just below the quater line on the fuel guage) and thats not goin to easy or 350kms if i take it easy. highway drivin the best i got was 450

again thanks for all your help

Wes

how many litres are you putting in? out of my last tank i got 280km for about 45L, and my car isn't running rich. my AFR's are 12.0 from 3000-5000, then slowly drop to 11.4 from 5000 up to redline. and i don't spend that much time above 5000rpm. it more has to do with the fact that the accelerator meets the floor a bit.

Im probably putting in about the same amount fuel. excuse my lack of knowledge what do you mean by AFR

AFR is Air/Fuel ratio. that is the ratio on which it is measured to see if the car is running rich or lean.

how much heavy acceleration do you do? also how much driving when the car is cold do you do? alot of my driving is done when the car is cold (only live a few mins from work) and the car only just comes up to temp as i get to work. when the car is cold it uses more fuel to make it warm up quicker.

I have never mesured the AFR (how do you do that if i dont have a guage or a after market ecu).

I generally drive easy but accelerate hard on the odd occasion, and for as drivin if cold one of my jobs its only just warm by the time i get there but the other one is 30min drive which is my main job (5days a week)

the only way to check the AFR's is with a wideband o2 sensor. if you put it on a dyno they will be able to check them.

as for fuel economy, you aren't getting that bad economy. next time you fill up work out how many litres per 100kms you get.

e.g if you do 300kms to 45L then you divide 45 by 3 = 15L per 100k's.

i get about 16.5L/100k's in my skyline and about about 11.5-12 in my missus SSS pulsar.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have the same problem as this first lad, and have fitted the same BOV, can someone tell me why it pops and farts at low boost when ya take ya foot off? is it because my car is running a airflow meter and not a map sensor?

or how can i still use the new BOV without changing back to the old one?

:)

mate, my mechanic got me to take the 02 sensor out and clean it with white vinegar and that seemed to help alot, although if your o2 sensor is totally screwed this wont help. Theres only 2 ways to find out if its stuffed, find someone with the nissan diag software to monitor it as you go for a drive or just simply bite the bullet and buy a new one

You guys have shocking fuel economy! I get around 11.5 - 13 L/100km!

That's in an R33, 3" turbo back, 7psi/11psi (adjustable on switch) FMIC, induction pipe on turbo...

Mind you, I generally keep the revs below 2500RPM, which if you do, you get alot better economy, I don't even meet normal atmos pressure half the time (Aftermarket guage too BTW)

As for popping and farting.

The AFM is measuring X amount of air, then you let off the gas and vent to atmos, hence, AFM thinks you have a shit load of air, motor has no air... Basically, it's going really rich as the BOV vents as the ECU thinks there's more air in there!

holy shit I am getting sick of these

"I just installed a fulleh sick swooshy twirly trumpet sqwarky BOV and my car stalls and runs rich" type threads.....

Can we get a full explaination done up and made a sticky?

firstly, are you sure its your car that smells of fuel and not your mates???

and secondly, if your car smells that bad of fuel it usaully indicates a leak somewhere.

thirdly, your car ain't running that rich if thats your fuel economy. Stockers run rich from the factory, nothing you can do unless you start changing to a fuel controller or an aftermarket ECU such as a PFC.

I regularly get 400 to 500kms from a tank but i don't boost it most times and do my racing at the track, where i did 250kms to a full tank!!!

where you live also plays a bit of a part in it. where i live is rather hilly, so there is a lot of taking off up hills, etc. even though you drive down the hills as well, so you use more fuel at times, and less at others.

I wouldnt call everyone elses economy shocking if you dont even drive on boost

its like saying

"MBS206" you have shocking fuel economy! i get around 9.3L/100km!

Mind you, i was on the hume highway

But this guy is jumping up and down about bad fuel economy. 90% of fuel economy problems are how people drive. If you want to boost the car every gear change, expect to fill up every 200-300KM.

Basically, it's a different way of saying HAVE A LOOK AT YOUR DRIVING STYLE!

And I'm not talking from just one tank on the hume, I was giving how I generally drive, each time I'm in the car. It's driver attitude as I said 90% of the time, that controls fuel economy.

If I said my fuel economy, and nothing else, heaps of people would be like "WTF, why's mine so bad" whereas, IF they think for themselves, they might take a look at there driving style.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
