scathing
Last week The Sunday Telegraph revealed that the State Government's laws to save young drivers had failed, with twice as many P-plate drivers killed this year compared with the corresponding period last year.Since the new laws - including banning P-platers from driving high-powered cars - were introduced in July last year, there has been a 37 per cent increase in the number of 17- to 20-year-old drivers killed on NSW roads. Source: Sunday Telegraph The problem with kneejerk reactions is that someone gets kicked in the balls. Bliksem
Probably because P platers are now trying to drive like Schumacher in clapped out peices of crap with no handling or braking capabilities and low safety standards. frx026
Dick Johnson - Aussie Racing legend and Nice guy was recently quoted as saying "ban low performancee drivers, not high performance cars" Surely the key here is education to drive within the limits of the vehicle and the road conditions. mad082
that just shows that p platers in NSW are the worst in the country. as they said, NSW p plate crashes went up with these laws, in other states they dropped. blame it on the drivers, not the politicians. Rezz
The problem with kneejerk reactions is that someone gets kicked in the balls. "Someone gets kicked in the balls" = 17 - 20 year olds? So the Government has somehow 'killed' that extra 37% because of a kneejerk reaction? Your comment sounds like your blaming the laws. I'd say inexperience/alcohol/stupidity/peer pressure/invincibility was the culprit for all those deaths. hanyou
well who didnt see this coming... you dont need a fast car to hit 110km/h+ or watever speeds ppl want to drive. its upto the driver. **JaR**
Probably because P platers are now trying to drive like Schumacher in clapped out peices of crap with no handling or braking capabilities and low safety standards. exxxactly. what the government fails to see when they implement blanket bans, is that sports/performance cars also have upgraded safety features to deal with what the car is capable of. sure skylines, silvias, supras etc are high powered cars and can do 0-100 quicker than an average commo etc... but the safety features in them far outtweigh compared to falcons, commodores n shit. i'd rather be in my car, knowing there is safety features to deal with sketchy situations compared to something else. frankxinyu
as it says, u can be a dickhead in any cars u drive....it does not depends on the car, it depends on the drivers. CEF11E
Now that I am 29 I think it is a good idea to restrict the sorts of cars p plate drivers drive. I say this because when I was 18 I used to drive like an idiot. I was inexperienced and thought I was invincable. And all my freinds were the same, all balls and no brains. I did some really silly things and had I been able to get my hands on a GTR i may well be dead. I say its not a bad idea but it was not implemented properly. All kids should be taught defensive driving and be shown scenes of accidents that caused deaths. A friend of mine used to carry a picture of a horrible fatal car crash in his wallet and as soon as he felt like driving like an idiot he would pull the picture out and look at it. Young australians are far too precious to loose in horrible accidents. we need to do all we can protect them. Bliksem
All kids should be taught defensive driving and be shown scenes of accidents that caused deaths. I agree with this, but the government no-doubt found the cheap and easy option was to ban hi powered cars, rather than train the drivers properly. About the closest thing they have in NSW to this which proves your reaction skills and defensive driving is the reaction test which is a crock of shit anyway.... any 6 y/o could pass it. Savage Bliss
Dick Johnson - Aussie Racing legend and Nice guy was recently quoted as saying"ban low performancee drivers, not high performance cars" Exactly... ban d*kheads! 700HP-GTR33
Another thread that is goin no-where.......frustration... I will repeat it once again....the hero's of this world need some lessons in ... When everything goes wrong,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,this is what happens.. Take out young drivers to accidents and let them see what they can do with their attitude on the road. Had one pass me,VR Commodore on p'S MOVING IN A HURRY...Maybe to his death.(A legal P's car) Or unfortunately some-one elses death. What a stupid law..... most cars do over 110KM's an hour and many new ones are going to be even faster. Power to weight has nothing to do with why they are killing themselves on the road. I did some really silly things and had I been able to get my hands on a GTR i may well be dead. Exactly. I'm glad I spent my first few years driving in a Charade. Lapses in judgement are all too common when you are young and still learning and a fast car means you will get yourself into deep shit so much faster. Compare 5 seconds of accelerating in a Charade vs even a GTS-t. I remember giving it a huge fang up a steep hill in the charade and was pulled over for "driving like Fangio" - yet I topped out at about the speed limit. The same blat in a turbo car would have seen me well into "I'm keeping your licence" territory. thorpe84
i know this is a little off topic but when i was 17 i learnt to drive in a friends hq 1 tonna, it had a 454ls6 640hp/470 or something kw. strange how you can drive something like that but not tow a trailor honestly i really think if you trained young drivers so they could handle their sport cars more they would all go out and think they are even more invinsable and cause more carnage showing them real wrecks of cars and the people that cant put 3 words together might have a different effect though Edited September 24, 2006 by thorpe84 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/135825-banning-performance-cars-from-p-platers-more-deaths/#findComment-2524568 Share on other sites
mad082
showing them real wrecks of cars and the people that cant put 3 words together might have a different effect though thats a better way to deter them. show them a person in their early 20's that is servely messed up due to a crash. dangerous_daveo
TWICE!!! Far out, I would have expected a little more, but not twice! To say, rah rah gene pool, rah rah, inexperience rah rah. It is simple, teach people how to drive. Not show them how to park, show them how to change gears all that. Show them how to drive properly, then teach them how to do it. In controlled conditions put these people out of their safety zones. I mean today for example, we had 2 groups, quite small. 1st group young buch of school girls, sent out to us by their school. They did really well, asked questions, you could see improvment, they noticed their own improvement, and how it was worth while. 2nd group, some were rah rah I dont need to do that I'll never have a car with abs or airbags, well sorry you just will, I feel only 2-3 people from the second group went away with anything. So maybe the people who did bugger all should get the restrictions. I mean hey they do it with insurance, you do the course your insurance is cheaper, it obviously works. BTW, for the record I'm a defencive driving instructor on weekends etc, hence Im somewhat a bit more passionate about this kind of stuff...
