Hi guys, I currently have an R33 series 2 on stock suspension with stock rims. I am soon to purchase some 18x8 and 18x9 rims to go on the car and I would like to lower the stance of the car also to improve upon the currently 4wd height and handling.

I drive this car over all sorts of roads everyday, and I am not remotely interested in drift or trackwork etc as its purely a good looking and fast'ish daily that is comfortable on most syd roads.

What suspension components would you fellas recommend given that I want to:

  • keep as close to possible as standard ride comfort
  • lower the car to something sensible above the wheels while remaining at a legal height (height suggestions anyone?)
  • improve the handling a bit (I find a lot of softness under hard cornering with the stock gear).
  • not spend a bucket load setting it up, I have to do this somewhat el cheapo

Will also be looking for a good Syd workshop to put it all in. live on north shore (chats - hornsby areas)

ps I have left a msg for Sydneykid in case anyone says to msg him, but I thought I'd also get your opinions as there have to be plenty of you who have gone from stock suspension to a simple street setup.

SK's bilstein whiteline kit is probably the closest you'll get to maintain your ride comfort although I have not tried it. There have been a lot of positive feedback on this.

Myself and a few other 34 owners have gone the Tein Super Street coilovers and have found comfort is still there and they are no where as harsh as would be expected of "jap coilovers". A good option if you like to adjust ur ride height up and down and control damper rates.

i'm done with coilovers, i had the HSD's in my last car and they nearly killed me occasionaly when I drove in the wet! I need something I can have clients / girlfriend in car and not have them complain about being shaken all over.

I think remaining with shocks / spring combo will be the go, just not sure what yet.

did that make the car lower? what was your height from wheel centre to guard with the stock springs still in place?

SK - I am thinking hard about if i can fork out the $1200 or thereabouts for the the shox + springs...

will be in touch if I magic up the money in the next few weeks.

SK's Bilstein shocks with your stocker springs. Mate of mine just did that and the ride is firmer than stock but still nice and soft. Ride is adjustable.

I lucked out and bought an S2 R33 with this kit fitted . I smile every time I drive it . I had not imagined that it was possible to get this level of handling without the bone jarring ride . No bugger's ever going ANYWHERE near this car with Jap suspension .

Some people have all the luck. Me hoping my tax return will cover a SK set this year

so when you get 'adjustable hieght' suspension, its the shock that actually being adjusted?

i'm thinking along the lines of the person who started the thread..

as in i want

- confortable ride

- slightly lower like 20-25mm or so (thats adjustable in case of cops)

- nothing more than for the street.. ie no drift work ever!

should i get some of the group buy shocks and chuck them into the standard springs? is that possible?

and that would keep comfortable ride and adjustable ride height?? if that's possible, why bother going for the group buy springs also? what do they add to the combo?

also, are any of the other stuff needed to get this all setup? eg bushes or whatever...

i'm an extreme newbie at suspension!

    • So.... the K&N air box thingo was too big, ended up gifting it to a mate, well, by gifting it he actually supplied food and beer at the pub,  which was nice, as it will not sit on a shelf in the garage for the next 10 years I did trim up some of the existing stuff to neaten it all up and gave it some wrinkle paint, unfortunately it currently has a used and abused mish mash of different types of hose clamps, 4 big fat T bolt type (shit), and a few normal clamps of vairing sizes and brands, but..... only until the 6 constant tension black worm clamps that I ordered from EFI solutions turn up next week Currently the current hose clamps are triggering me hard, LOL Is this the final version, probably not, I really want just 2 silicone pieces, a straight bit of silicone from the filter to the MAF is easy and will happen as soon as I head into Just Jap tomorrow, the problematic part is a 30° silicone bend from the MAF to the TB that I can connect the engine breather from the head, I found that there are bulk head fittings for boat bilge pumps that should work, but until I can get a 30° silicone bend the alloy pipe, and the 11ty thousand hose clamps, are there for the foreseeable future 4 hose clamps are golden, 6 are grudgingly acceptable, the 8 currently holding it all together is just taking the piss    I've also ordered 60 more retaining wall blocks for the front yard, I mis-gonculated the height that was required to get above the base of the Photinia's (red robin's) that are the hedge behind the front fence, currently it is 2 blocks high, and about 1/2 a block short, so going 3 blocks high will be above the base of the red robin's, and allow some room for mulch
