Select your poll and if your running more then 1 Bar, list your set up as well as boost and power!

Im trying to get an idea of how much the stock turbo's can take from people who can 100% confirm that their turbos are stock ceramic turbo's

Most people say 1 bar is it but I have seen cars run more without problems on bonefied ceramic turbo's.

I have also seen cars with less then 14 psi damage ceramic's but is more likely due to shagged turbo's.

I know the R34 GTR turbo's, while being ceramic BB will take 17 psi and will make near 400 to the rear wheels.

A good friend is going to put a tune into the car and said he will run 17 psi as long as its got a good EBC.

I double checked with him 3 times and he has assued me he has done it many times. If it shits the stock turbo's- no big deal, I will get my brother to put a GT3040R on it

Stock R34 GTR turbos will make 300rwkw on 17psi.

I dont think so tim.

Put it this way. Dial up 15-16psi. Take the car to the track

See what happens... or to save the issue, i'll tell you. Dead turbo.

Dead turbo = (most of the time) dead motor.

Its not that people "cant" run 17-11ty billion psi. Its that most people arent silly enough to do so.

There are limited people that do, and sometimes they are ok, more often than not you see them post up 6 months later with a dead piston in 5 or 6 after thier turbo died.

Essentially, its your own gamble.

Age & conditon play a major part. You dont know if the car was serviced well before it came to your hands.

You dont know what boost levels, what activities etc. All things that can lead to a very expensive lesson

So its really luck of the draw, most people err on the side of caution, and rightly so. Not everyone likes to engage in a 5 figure rebuild

Its like standing with your mates at the local go-kart track, edible undies on your head, helmet clutched, hopping from foot to foot checking each kart as is pulls into the pits, “which one has brakes that work and the least shagged single thumper”

Theres too many factors to consider regarding the history and previous owners of the car.

Had a few examples of ppl running a bar and a half… congrats, I figure it’s a measure of time before selling a kidney becomes choice

Dont mess with fate. Save your self the grief and change them before they fail

Hmm,

Put a boost gauge on the car this morning, 16.5 psi with no olive.

Put another one on, the same, 16.5 Psi and has been so for over a year

Why wouldnt R34 turbo's make 300 rw kw? Have you seen otherwise?

They dont have the same thrust set up as a bushed turbo and are more reliable on higher boost. They arent that much smaller then 34 N1's.

I understand its like anything, someone who runs 17 psi on a car without knowing that the fuel pump/system/tune they will blow the engine. Heck you could blow your stock engine at 1 Bar if it had an damaged air flow meter.

Im talking about people who have taken the steps to ensure that the engine is running properly.

As for 1.5 bar, thats just stupidity

R32 GTR, stock turbos/dumps, 5" K&N pod, PFC + BCK, 4" straight-through exhaust (FS, see below).

Made 253awkw/550nM on a slipping clutch @ 18psi, tuned at CRD. 12.5 @ 111 on a G-tech.

No dramas for 18 months before I added mufflers (including half-a-dozen full track days @ Wakefield).

Added mufflers to bring noise down from 105dB to 95dB, lasted another 3 months (inc. 1 track day)

before boost started to fall off (down to 15psi on same duty cycle) and then shortly after that blew the

exhaust wheel off the front turbo. Inspected cyls 1-3; no bits of exhaust wheel that we could find.

Make of this what you will  Personally, I think the 18psi was OK _without_ the mufflers; but that with

the added backpressure things just got hotter and nastier and it all became too big an ask. Perhaps

even without the mufflers things would have blown when they did - nobody knows. And 4" with

no muffling isn't an option for pretty much everyone.

18 months at 18psi was fine by me. It all comes down to whether you're prepared to _chance_

blowing stuff in exchange for more welly. Every time you wind something up in a car, you will

either find the limit of it or another related system - cars are designed as a package.

Regards,

Saliya

Snowman was running a bit over 1 bar on his R34 GTR and he was makign something like 280rwkws. His didnt die after several track days????

And they went onto Geoffs Twin Turbo RB25 and died @ 7psi and cost him a motor

my 34 GTR runs 260awkw roughly around the 285 - 290rwkw @ 1 bar have not had any dramas yet but have not done any sort of circuit work with it though, but have taken it down the strip boost did creep up to 1.1 bar higher in the rev range

If you have a V Spec II you have 403 turbo's (N1's) and will be easily able to run more boost/power

Who told you that? V-spec II has the same ceramic turbos as all R34 Gtrs, only N1's and NUR specs have steel wheel turbos .

If you have a V Spec II you have 403 turbo's (N1's) and will be easily able to run more boost/power

The only N1 parts on a V-spec II from the factory are the rear disc rotors as wrxhoon has said the turbos are the same as every other 34 GTR

I think you will find that all serries II 34 GTRs have the same brake rotors not just V-spec IIs.

Yes true, but we were only talking V-spec II's because everyone knows they are better then M-spec's :)

And why are v-spec II's better than M-specs? Do you know the difference ?

Can you check the part number on your turbo's?

If you have sold them, ask the person you sold them to.

I am under the understanding that:

R32 V Spec II had N1's

R33 V Spec didnt

R34 V Spec didnt

R34 V Spec II has N1's (401, 402 or 403's)

The 34 N1 has upgraded pumps and cams, apart from that the engine is the same as the 34 V spec II...

Refer to post 14 by me, thats correct, you dont need to check numbers , if you have the turbos off the car put a pic up showing the exhaust side and i'll tell you what they are .

Not sure if R32 V-spec II's had N1 turbos but i don't think they did, maybe someone that has a 32 V-spec II can confirm this .

As for the 33's you are correct, they all had ceramic , only the N1 cars had the steel wheel turbos .

One more thing there are about 4 different R34 GTR N1 turbos ...

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
