i have a coupple of questions about my new R33GTS-T.

1. at how many revs does the car come on boost?

2. When the boost kicks on, how much extra power does it add?

The reason i ask this is i was driving up falcon street in crows nest doing less than 40, (i was in second gear) then i floored it, the revs went up pretty quickly but when the turbo kicked in it threw me back in the seat and the car stepped sideways (thank god no one was next to me) [it was nothing major just like what you see when some people launch at the lights! i don't even think i left my lane ]. i am new to turbo cars so i have to learn to drive them, but is that normal, such a big power increase to break traction at about 50Ks an hr??

or would the previous owner have done some tweaking? i didn't look at the boost gage on the dash, but once before when i was on boost the needle was off the clock! should i get this checked?

3. When i start of in first gear (in the wet) i don't get wheel spin, but as soon as i go over about 2500 revs the wheels start to skid, is this normal? or perhaps i just need to learn to drive better?

4. If i should get new tyres for the rear which ones? at the moment it has 225/50/16 dunlop fm901's.

Thanks!

you shouldn't be able to see it looking from the top as it's bottom mount

but even if it's aftermarket turbo, if it isn't too big, it would be hard to tell by looking at in, you'd have to take it out and see

but who would complain with a bigger turbo :P

and when you say "but once before when i was on boost the needle was off the clock! should i get this checked?" what boost gauge was this?

On my factory boost gauge, the needle goes up to just below the half way mark. I cant notice much kick back anymore, but a mate who went for a drive with me says it does push you back into the seat. I've never had it step sideways doing 50km/hr.

Sounds likr the previous owner has done some tweaking.

A5h: you have alot to learn mate. I would be booking yourself in at an advanced driver training course asap.

Putting your car sideways in the middle of a street because you dont know how the car behaves is not a good thing.

Boost on your car being a stock turbo will come in early, from memory on my old car anywhere from 2500rpm - 3000rpm.

Chances are although you claim to have being doing 40, the revs were at a high enough level that boost was instant.

I dont recommend you plant your foot on the gas especially if its wet.

Considering you are relatively inexperienced driving a turbo car i suggest you have the boost checked and have it returned to stock if it isnt already. There is no need for you to be running higher boost until you can handle the cars factory power.

If you have FM901's on the back at least ,you have some very good tyres there, stick with them

If your boost is off the guage, it is over 14psi, general consensus is that anything over 10psi can kill stock turbo. I'd suggest you have a good mechanic look at the turbo and ECU to make sure you're not in for some expensive bills.

Also, as Blitz said, get along to some advanced driver training, its the best mod you'll ever make :)

Isn't one bar 14.something psi? The boost gauge on my series 2 goes from -7 to +7psi, comes on boost around 2800rpm with 4.5psi and then goes up to the max(7psi) from 4500rpm onwards... Are all you guys saying that the stock boost is one bar(14psi)?????????

The +7 on the factory gauge is 700mm/hg - this is not PSI.

+7 is equal to 13.53 psi or 0.93 bar...it's a very unusual unit of measure Nissan have used, it's more normally found in engineering.

Stock boost on a R33 is usually between 5-8 psi (depending on a few things!)

Cheers,

G

i dont know if this is a possibility but could the waste gate be not working right which results in overboosting??? could this be the reason for the sudden power increase to cause wheel spin in 2nd.

if it is overboosting then won't it also cause the needle to go off scale???

sum1 correct me if i'm wrong....

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
