well that's good to hear, someone told me today that the fines are huge!! bastard... :P

he was telling me it was like $600!! because they take school zones to be more serious or some crap..

I got done for 55kms in the 40km zone... I was at the beginning and hadnt slowed right down yet.

not sure if that will be an <15 fine or a >15 fine?

Ohh that shit, i also have been told that school zones attract higher penalties... so your not the only one who has heard that.

I think over 15 is the next bracket up, so you should be ok - the nice cops lower you to the bracket below if its like a few K's, as you could probably take them to court to say their instruments are accurate to X km/h and give reasonable doubt to what speed you were actually doing... or something like that...

Or if you're like styles32 on the forums, you get your daddy to get you off speeding in a school zone :(

I think the first zone is 14km/h and under, so less than 15km/h.

Anyways, isn't quite clear but... http://www.rego.act.gov.au/infringements/infringedemerit.htm

Normally, unless your a asshole, and they feel like it and it's really close to a lower bracket, they'll lower you.

It would have to be a < 15km/h fine as the cops rader is accurate to +/- 2km/h so u could have been doing 53 or 57

i think speeding in a school zone should be loss of licence straight away if during school hours .when you have kids yourself you will understand .look at that poor kid sophie 2nd time hit speed driver thru school zone . gee if ya cant even slow down for kids ya dont deserve to have a car . if you got done out of school hrs i hope ya dont get much of a fine if it was during school hours i hope ya walk for 6 months

cheers have a nice day

shell wasnt being reckless. it's a different thing altogether.

i've caught myself doing the 'regular' speed limit, and then realising i've entered a school zone, and slowed down accordingly. if there was a cop there, he'd have booked me.

and as far as the bigger fines/points go, i was also under the impression that if you speed in a school zone, they bend you over and get the baton out :( no lube

so it looks like thats a common misconception, if it is infact wrong.

i think parents should teach there kids road safety , i never had 40 zones when i was at school i didn`t get ran over , in qbyn there is a 40 zone on a main road (Yass Rd) there is a set of traffic light which lets ppl cross there is also 2 side street which let ppl drop there kid off on a quite rd. Is this 40 zone needed???

I really hope your in Queanbeyan 1 day and get done in this school zone , i wonder if u will give your car up for 6 months

Yeh, your right, i just looked it up.

But then I also saw this...

Mobile cameras will not be used to enforce speed restrictions in school zones or areas affected by road works.

So... did you get caught by a cop on the side of a road? or a camera? Don't cops normally just flag you down if your speeding and give you a fine on the spot?

Edited by StinkyPoo

i dont speed through school zones on principal, the fact that i work in schools means i go through several every day and it IS annoying slowing down but i couldnt live with hitting a small kid let alone killing one

They dont attract higher fines but they do attract more attention... i see more cops in schools zones around 8-30 - 9-30 and 2-30 - 3-30 everyday then anywhere else.

StinkyPoo, he flagged me down and said he'd be sending the fine.

He was a nice cop, very friendly to me, so hopefully he'll do it <15

mid life crisis, for the record I go through this school zone every day and I always slow down. As I said - I was right at the beginning but didnt slow down quickly enough it seems.

The school zone is a very very long straight stretch of road with high visability on both sides, and I can tell you that even doing 55kms I would have plenty of time to stop IF there were any children around which there never is at the time I go through every day (1.45pm). It's a High School and they're all inside.

I know that's not the point but I'm just letting you know that I don't make a habit of racing through school zones for the fun of it.

I'm of two minds about this.

High-School kids should know better. If you haven't learned how to cross a road by the age of 13 or so then Road education has well and truly failed.

In regards to pre-schools and primary schools, then yes, i feel that times should be similar to NSW where you only have the zones enforced during the times they are entering and leaving schools - Except in the case where they are spread over 2 sites, and students have to cross the road during the day. This all day Bullshit annoys the crap out of me - particularly for high schools.

As far as fines for the younger kids - nail them for 3-6 points and ~500+

Really?? I have no idea!

He showed me the reading on the gun... went away with my licence and came back and said "yeah unfortunately being a school zone we can't be lenient" sorta like he may have let me off if was anywhere else, and then said the fine would be mailed and I'd get it soon.

Maybe ACT are strange, i've never gotten a speeding find in the ACT yet, so i don't know. I didn't think they could do it in NSW, as i had mates who were threatened with fines in the mail and nothing ever came.

Now I'm sure my response is going to anger some people, mainly parents, but before you react I ask you to remove your "parent" hat & put on your 'common-sense" hat (if you still have one- so many people in general-life seem to have misplaced theirs).

Around 6yrs ago I was working for a traffic survey company in Brisbane & was involved in collecting data from several school-zone test-sites in the lead up to the 40km/h zones being implemented. Whilst I understand the "all children are precious, we must protect them" etc train-of-thought, rather that trying to save them from themselves, isn't it much better to EDUCATE THEM instead??

Now to everyone that is going to respond with "kids will be kids, you can't blah blah blah" my response is & will always be BULLSH*T!! As GTR32GUS already said earlier, back in the day there weren't special speed-zones around schools & we all survived, because we were taught respect for the road. We KNEW that the road was for vehicles & we're taught to look 3 times (left, right, left) to make sure the way was clear & safe before crossing the road.

Sadly, & this is one of my "pet-hates", the onus of self-responsibility has been eroded in the modern-world & I believe this is to the detriment of humanity. Again this is going to sound harsh, but what we now have is "Darwinism in reverse". Instead of teaching our kids the ways of the world, we shirk our responsibilities as adults & instead look for someone, ANYONE to blame as long as it isn't ourselves.

The end-result of trying to make the world "idiot-proof" is we are creating generations of "idiots" that cannot or WILL NOT think for themselves & take responsibility for their own actions. This forces us all to exist in a world that is structured to accomodate the "lowest common denominator" & as this also leads to "idiots breeding idiots", thus it becomes a generational thing & instead of evolving, we run the risk of "devolving" as a species.

Now next time you get pulled up on an empty road for doing 6km/h over the posted limit or even worse, get a camera-infringement in the mail for similar or less of an infraction, remember my rant & maybe you'll then understand the "lowest-common-denominator" factor that influences how the world currently functions.

As sad as it must be, if a child runs out in front of a car & get's injured or killed it's not ultimately the fault of the driver, the school, the teachers, the Gov't or any of their respective dept's, IT IS THE FAULT OF YOU & YOUR CHILD, PERIOD!!!

In regards to the comment on Sophie Delezio by Mid-Life-Crisis, speed was NOT a direct cause of either of the unfortunate incidents that befell her. BOTH incidents were caused by elderly drivers that has no right to still be driving anywhere at anytime. Again it is much simpler & almost socially-acceptable to point the finger at something, ANYTHING other than the real cause because the end-result would be much more stringent testing & scrutiny of ALL drivers at ALL suppposed levels of skill & "experience". But hang-on, that would mean the same people that whinge about "hoon" this & "import" that would suddenly find themselves under the same scrutiny that we are unfortunately singled-out for way more than most (but not all) of us deserve.

Now for the record, as I'm sure someone is going to fire back at me- I am 35yo, I hold an open car licence, an open m/cycle licence, a heavy vehicle licence, have all my 12 points intact, have never lost any of my licences for any reason & probably average more km's per mth than the average driver does in a yr. That put's me on not one but THREE sub-groups that the average "driver" looks down to as a "menace-to-society" but somehow I survived & yes I do consider myself qualified to state the above comments.

So flame away, but please be constructive not just abusive........

haha well said

tony, we'll all find out v.soon... I'll make sure I post back in here and let everybody know! :P

I hope it's not the baton :(

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
