the map isnt closed loop, your fuel map is determined by the amount of air passing though your AFM.

your larger turbine will come in later and suck more air later, so until it comes on boost, the ECU will add the correct amount amount of fuel for manifold vacuum.

when it does come on boost, it will see more air going through the AFM and compensate with more fuel

i've got an safc2 which was tuned. from my knowledge about them they correct fuel at SET rpm points, not 'when the turbo kicks in'. someone correct me if im wrong.

You're not wrong :santa:

do you plan to turn the car off after a few hot runs to see if the bearings fail?

thats a serious question

Why would you want to do that? Seems stupid to me...

One of the important things about journal-bearing turbos is that oil flow must be maintained. Why would you want to risk farking the turbo by shutting the engine off when the turbo is red hot, just to see if it fails or not? Maybe it won't fail, but you may have caused minor damage which later compounds and causes a bearing to let go???

I would not encourage hot shutdown's, Even with ball bearing turbo's damage can be caused.

It is now common knowledge that doing hot shutdown's not only can damage your turbocharger but damage your engine.

The topic has been covered many times before and logic always prevails.

GTR's have nearly all journal bearing turbo's from factory and very rarely fail unless overboosted.

The failure is because they have ceramic turbines not because they are journal bearing.

Silvia's Journal bearing from factory.

Toyota Supras, Surf's, Celicas.... Journal bearing.

In some cases these are still all going after 100.000km.

So saying that journal bearing turbo's previously have shorter life spans then ball bearing is a little hillarious.

These at the end of the day have been driven like normal cars for many years and nothing has happened in most cases.

There are always a very few amount of people that like to start the debate up every time with the same outcome.

Sometimes hot shutdowns are unavoidable and i have had it occur many times due to something as little as an atmospheric blow off valve making the car stall.

I have pulled apart many turbo's after this instance and bearings have been fine.

There is this huge halo around ball bering turbo's and thoughts that they dont fail.

This is not true and i have had pallot loads of ball bearing turbo's taken away as they do not have the versatility that journal bearing turbo's do and ease of repair.

:D

yeah you know what, that makes sence. why risk farking my turbo? if it fails in the line of duty then so be it, but if it fails from me running it in a way where i wouldnt usually, then whats the point?

exactly.

There are just some haters out there that can't hack people buying $800 hiflows that are comparable to $1600 hiflows.

I won't raise the argument again, but just leave each to their own. I know what i'd rather spend the extra money on :D

i thought an update was needed after so damn long.

the turbo is going strong. VERY strong. im running it on 14psi daily. might hit 18psi a bit later but i havent been bothered opening up my bonnet for a few weeks after all the time ive spent under it lately!

i've sold my SAFC and was getting around 380/tank with the tune i had. on the standard computer im getting 430km/tank which im finding strange.

anyways, the reason for the long reply was i had a few oil problems. i did my valve stem seals, fixed up the pcv and its all running sweet.

also because of the n1 oil pump im using which pumps 25% more oil ive been told, ive made the reducer 4mm as to not flood the turbo.

im going for the greddy ultimate so ill be back with results after im finished with all of my uni work and exams are over (i know ill spend too much time on the car if i get it before!).

What sort of power are you getting out of your beast?

I had my powerfc installed after running my sliding performance high flow on the stock ECU for about a year. It's now putting out 190rwkw on stock boost (7psi), but i cant boost any more at the moment, cause my clutch is slipping!

Time for a new clutch, and then aiming for 230-240kw on slides awesome turbo!

Hey mate, just wondering how its all coming along?

I'll be getting my highflow in a couple of weeks off of slide and this thread is a great read

Cheers mate

its going well. comes on boost nice and hard, even with the standard computer.

Interested to see what piggy back your gona put into that car, since its an auto

i can use a pfc if i wanted to champ. dont believe everything you read

but i've decided to go with the emanage ultimate (also off slide). its got everything i need + more. i'd probably even go for it if i had a manual.

Hmm i think the emanage provide fuel control and ignitition, but i have read somewhere that the ignigtion control 'retard' is handled by the ecu for shifting.. So i think that you would only benefit from the fuel control.. lol dont qoute me on this but im sure i read it sumhere :P

it is true that the ignition retard is influenced by the auto ecu, but because you have control of ignition through the emanage you can turn that timing back to where its supposed to be at any particular rpm.

this is very interesting because its nearly exactly the same setup as i am going to run..except for the e management (going pfc) and a avcr.

so i am keen to see the results as i am deciding which high flow to go with - the journal like this or the ball bearing., i am not sure that the dramatic increase in price is justified given the comparision of the results.

get it up and keep it posted mate

im trying to get my car ready for the track so i dont think ill be getting an emanage just yet. after the track day ill be saving up for it + a tune. i'll also be getting the sensor so i dont need to run an AFM.

ill MAY be hitting the dyno before the track day to see where my AFRs are at so ill keep you all posted.

    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.

    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
