600kms From Tank

Recommended Posts

Geez, 500 - 600ks from a tank thats something I would never imagined in my r33...

I did a test driving like a granny shifting always through one tank at 3500rpm and aonly got 375ks and that was really trying... I;m running pfc and 3.5in zorst... the rest is pretty stock...

Maybe I should get it tuned again.. I've asked three different shops to retune and they all say nah I wouldn't retune it its pretty damn right on...

maybe I'm just a lead foot and don't realise or my tacho is lying...

a few things to note

cruise AFRS should be tuned (usually under 3 grand is the spot to be tuning)

make sure 02 closed loop feedback is on

make sure you have a working 02 sensor (replace it every 50,000k's, if youve never done it, get a new one now)

dont vary the throttle over and over, keep a steady foot

dont boost the engine up, engine load uses more fuel

sometimes it may be more economical to run at say a bit higher rpm and less load then lower rpm and higher load

ie:

2900 rpm with load row 5 in 4th gear

vs

2100 with load row 12 in 5th gear

it also depends on where you live. i live in a pretty hilly town, so while i spend some time going down hill at little or no throttle, i also spend time going up hill at a much higher throttle percentage.

the best economy i have gotten was 410k's to 45L. that was about 80% highway, and 20% hard driving round town (a little bit of that with a car full of people). thats just under 11L/100ks.

i cannot see why a different octane rating would yield different economy? i would love for someone to show me how ?

best ive got in my r33 pfc was 550k's to a tank, and it wasn't empty

Cheater :ninja:

That was when you were cruising to Sydney at 110km/h all the way

What is your average milage?

I get about 320km to a tank, with 260rwkw, but my car is a weekender (not even sometimes :) ), so when i drive it i like to drive it  , fuel consumption does not bother me at all. If i want to save fuel, i leave the car in the garage and take the company car :) .

average milage is 400k's to a tank with 02 feedback turned on now

nothing cheating about it :)

the drive to sydney was with 02 feedback off

ive since turned it on and i was a bit suprised its given me some better economy on the street ,even tho my normal afr's are pretty lean

sometimes it may be more economical to run at say a bit higher rpm and less load then lower rpm and higher load

ie:

2900 rpm with load row 5 in 4th gear

vs

2100 with load row 12 in 5th gear

That doesn't tell you much though! Best way to judge fuel economy is to sit at speed in various gears and note the injector duty cycle!

Btw I experienced notably better highway fuel economy when leaned to ~15.5:1 AFRs by switching off O2 feedback and adjusting the IGN/INJ trim.. I'd only advise it if you have a wideband though....

the best way to judge economy is with a wideband

but yeah i did the same, tuned afrs with closed loop off

i wouldnt be using inj duty as the way to work out afrs, althought it can be used to "guesstimate" them

i get about 520ks to a tank, and it's not empty when i fill up. i use shell vpower. those are city k's, up/down hills etc.

r32 gtr, mods: mines ecu, steel wheel turbos, turbo back exhaust, 550cc injectors, greddy oil management, trust air pods. i have a powerfc ready to go in.

i reckon i could do better but my twin plate clutch means i have to give it some juice to move off the line.

edit: 520 kms / 51 litres used = 9.8l/100kms.

Another way of looking at it:

I get better mileage out of PULP on my bike, if I have to use ULP I hit reserve 25km earlier. I try to use PULP all the time, cos I can get that bit further [motorcycles aren't made for pushing] and get to the next town.

The economy doesn't add up to the extra cost, PULP is more expensive no argument. But the convenience of not having to 'short fill' = being able to make the next town makes it worthwhile.

Not everyone agrees on this one but I feel my R33 could do with a slightly taller final drive not so much because I want to have taller overall gearing but because I'd like a bit more load on the engine at round town speeds . I find myself short shifting this car all the time but then my style of driving is probably different to most . I like the idea of more load on the engine so throttle is opened a little more and dynamic CR a little higher . By using V power racing 100 pump fuel and tuning the engine exclusively for it both consumption/power AND throttle/boost response should improve . For the twenty someting cents a litre over power kero gade unleaded I can live with this . I might add my car is not daily driven either , have a nearly dead roller skate for general use .

Cheers A .

Got to agree there,

I've allways thought that - I've allways been annoyed with the short first gear - to keep up with the Jonses in commo taxis etc you end up doing 4000rpm gear changes 1st to 2nd all day long - gets annoying all day everyday and must be a bit hard on the synchros stopping the gears all the time.

My best rb lazy drive was my old clapped out vl na 5 speed - heaps of tourque and you weren't doing first to second gear changes in the first 10 metres.

Cheers

sorry dudes, havnt got a computer at home...

iv got 3" zorst, fmic, boosted to 11psi.

alot of my driving is h/way living 33kms from work so it is cruzing alot of the time but also some around town driving... nothing unushual that what i use the v-power fuel for.

just seems to get a noticable diffrence in economy.

one bad thing is i dont have that fuel any where in my normal day to day area of driving.. need to go min of 100kms away to get it, so by the time i get home its about the same! lol...

cheers for the replys

i get about the same top speed out of each gear in my skyline as i did in my 180sx, the missus SSS pulsar, and my old 5 speed falcon. the nissans just rev a lot harder to do it. but the falcon at 4000rpm sounds like its reving a lot harder than the nissans

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
