OK, on start up I get a rough idle (1500rpm down to 1000 & back up again) that settles eventually, the car is blowing a bit of black smoke (no cat but never this much) & since yesterday there has been a strange clicking from an unidentified engine bay location.

Since Wednesday I have been able to smell fuel inside the car, so I'm wondering if there is a leak somewhere, where does it end up?? My car is still getting the same economy, but it's just missing at certain points in each gear still. This link explains the problems I'm getting sorted, but they aren't as severe any more for some reason. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...howtopic=148137

A few of said problems are probably battery related, so next week I will get a new one & all should be fine. The alarm is working again as normal now which is weird

It sounds like a leaky injector, but whats the risk apart from starting a fire if I kept driving it? I'm only asking because the workshop I use is closed until the 8th of January, when the car will be going in to get all of this shit sorted out. To sort the backfiring tomorrow I am going to check the coilpacks for fractures & tape them up, but now this smell of fuel has me worried because the injectors are stock. Big power & boost & stock injectors = not good. FYI I'm not going crazy on it until I get some bigger injectors because if it was an injector that caused my rb25 to go in the first place at 350rwhp I don't want it happening to a 7k engine...

A leaky injector can certainly destroy a motor, if one cylinder is running so rich you can smell it, it will be getting fuel wash and that cylinder will not run in, the other concern is hydraulic lock after the car has been sitting, a leaky injector can fill a cylinder up to the point whereby when you go to crank it, it will bend a conrod.

You can also be blowing black smoke, and still getting a lean AFR if one of the cylinders is not firing correctly.

As you have excessive amounts of oxygen exiting the exhaust, hence, it seems "lean"

I personally, would not drive the car.

If you can smell I wouldn't be driving the car much ,as it probably means leaking fuel in the engine bay since fuel lines and injectors are all in front of drivers position is why u get to smell it first .I had the same problem with mine once it turned out to be a leaking O ring on one of the injectors and I know this has caused engine bay fires on at least 2 cars on this forum as I bought parts from them so personaly I wouldn't be driving it till it went to the mechanic's

Cheers Peter

Thanks for the replies, sort of what I was expecting :w00t: I'm going to try & get it to the tuning workshop which could be open, in which case bigger injectors will just go in now instead of screwing around. Either way it's going to leave me without a car so I hope it can get done quickly if they can take it.

It may be worth while just checking the plugs in my opinion, as they may be fouled explaining alot of the above instances, fuel missing and the sort, thats my opinion, leaking injectors wouldnt that mean also there would be an extent fuel smell in the engine bay?. it sounds to me could be a spark issue? Meh keep us updated as well as good luck finding a work shop open until later in the week, they'll all still be pissed from the weekend

What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
    • I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?
