Hey guys

Have just posted up a thread in General Auto regarding single plate vs twin plate clutches:

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...&threadid=14950

It would be great if anyone with a twin-plate in an R32 GT-R would be able to offer me a quick test drive to see what it's like - just up and down the street sort of stuff cause I'm looking for slow traffic driveability as opposed to drag launching : )

Gav, wouldn't mind testing out your clutch too, maybe the wife can do a quick test. Can do at the same time you pick up my ECU.

Cheers

Brendan

Hehehe, I'm sure. Well, if you're out and about on Saturday sometime, that would be ideal. Give me a call in the morning - say about 8.30am and we'll see when we can hook up.

Now, who's got a twin-plate (an OS-Giken would be even better).

Cheers

Hehehe, I do want to go a twin, cause the 'R made 302rwhp on only 0.75bar before the engine went in for a rebuild. Now that I've got the injectors and z32 afm's, there's not much else holding me back. So GTSTVSPEC, wanna give me a short drive with the twin - or anyone else with a twin-plate for that matter?

Cheers

Gotta admit that Ross's ceramic clutch that I've got in feels deceptively "non-heavy duty". Very nice to drive - feels stock.

Hope I'm wrong, but I suspect that I'll wear the sucker out within a year. On a cost/benefit basis tho' yearly replacement is cheaper than a new twin plate every 2 years.

Steve

What's the take-up like on the twins, if you had to put a distance to it between initial friction and fully clamped, what would it be - say about 10mm or more. My RG clutch would be about 10mm of friction before being fully clamped.

SteveSST i like your comments ive just been talking about the smooth hks take up with a mate he is probably lurking the forums now...

Sounds like the hks twin is the go do u agree?

Gav i think ur on the money if u want more power from the 4wd your new clutch will be as spongey as my 2500lb pressure plate in 3 months :D Ah well deal with it when it happens

Well ladies and gents, we've made a decision on what clutch we're going with. Thanks to Paul and Brett for lending us the keys to the rides for a test of two twin-plate clutches. Paul's has an OS-Giken in it and it was rather easy to control, partly attributed to the power-assisted clutch in the Skyline. I was half comparing to the standard GT-R clutch, and the RG clutch in the Silvia and it came in about half way. Brett's clutch is an unknown twin at this point, and was pretty much close to a standard feel. All in all the wife was pretty happy with the decision to go the twin plate OS-Giken. Thanks again for all the comments.

Cheers

Brendan

    • Welcome to Skyline ownership. Yes, it is entirely possible parts websites get things wrong. There's a whole world of inaccuracies out there when it comes to R34 stuff (and probably 33 and 32). Lots of things that are 'just bolt on, entirely interchangable' aren't. Even between S1 and S2 R34's. Yes they have a GTT item supposedly being 296mm. This is incorrect. I would call whoever you got them from and return them and let them know the GTT actually uses 310mm rotors. Depending on where you got them from your experience and success will obviously vary.
    • Hi...a bit a "development" on the brakes. I spoke to the guys where i get brakes from...and they are saying that 296mm EBC are for R34 GT-T. I then went to their site: https://www.ebcbrakes.com/vehicle/uk-row/NISSAN/Skyline (R34)/ and search for my car(R34 GT 1998 - it has GTT brakes) and it show me this USR1229 number and they are rly 296mm rotors... So now iam rly confused... The rotors i have now on the car are 310mm asi shown... So where is the problem? Does the whole EBC got it wrong or my calipers are just...idk know what?
    • Oh What the hell, I used to get a "are you sure you want to reply, this thread is XX months old" message. Maybe a software update remove that. My bad.
    • This is a recipe for disaster* Note: Disaster is relative. The thing that often gets lost in threads like this is what is considered acceptable poke and compromise between what one person considers 'good' looks and what someone else does. The quoted specs would sit absurdly outside the guards with the spacers mentioned and need  REALLY thin tyres and a LOT of camber AND rolling the guards to fit. Some people love this. Some people consider this a ruined car. One thing is for certain though, rolling the guards is pretty much mandatory for any 'good' fitment (of either variety). It is often the difference between any fitment remotely close to the guards. "Not to mention the rears were like a mm from hitting the coilovers." I have a question though - This spec is VERY close to what I was planning to buy relative to the inboard suspension - I have an offset measuring tool on the way to confirm it. When you say "like a mm" do you mean literally 1mm? Or 2mm? Cause that's enough clearance for me in the rear :p I actually found the more limiting factor ISNT the coilover but the actual suspension arms. Did you take a look at how close those were?
    • @GTSBoy yeah sorry i know thery are known for colors bud those DBA are too in colors 🙂 Green will be good enough for me
