remember though, this could have the potential to plough into a guardrail, i dont want to die on impact. also, what do they look like again, i think i know the one you mean, but cant remember?

i know what its like to drive AWD (i know the gtr is different) i own a subaru and i owned a very tail happy GTi-R. let me rephrase it sorry.

i want a car that i have to put a lot of skill and practise into to get to the same level as a gtr. if i bought a gtr people merely assume that its the car that is good and not the driver. i want a car that will help me develop my driving skills and technique to a much greater level.

the familia gtr and the gtir arent really good options now after having seen two friends blow up their gearboxes and diffs recently. so that narrows it down a bit. i have also heard that the early evo boxes are very weak, similar to early WRX boxes?

daveo that was exactly the response i was looking to get from someone. the sr20 idea was the DET not an n/a one, what would be the point in that? wtih the roof, i will be installing rollover bars in the event of anything happening. in regards to the bullet cars. well, i wouldnt go as far as they did but its the whole drivleine setup that i was referring to with them. i would obviously do the minor chassis changes with the engine upgrade as well. the bullet roadster i am referring to is actually the one they built with A 20BTT in it. it was a while ago now but it was road legal. i spoke to them about it and they said as long as you do it all by the books and can keep it under the emmissions level there shouldnt be too many issues. its not too hard to intall, just the mounts and lining it all up really.

with your idea of keeping the stock motor, a mate of mine actually had a similar idea. the mx-5 came out with the b6 engine in it. now he suggested i put a b6t or bpd engine out of the familia's into it. the b6t is the same engine just turbocharged out of the familia gtx's (stronger internals though) and the BPD is the 1.8 turbo out of the gtr familia's. since the stock motor and both familia engines are fairly similar the change over shouldnt be too hard and neither should the compliancing.

i will have 16k to play with, up front when i do this (my last car was stolen) so there wont be a need to save up for anything really.

The few mates I have who have owned evos (actually gsrs, with full evo3 conversions gearbox and diffs included) and they seem pretty tough, maybe not as good as supra 6 speed... But they copped a fair bit of abuse, as in hard launches, bit of clutch kicking trying to drift in the wet etc. Really whats going to kill the box is being harsh on it, cluch dumps etc, which dont equate to a quick lap time anyway. But they are def stronger than the familia and WRX boxes.

I cant imagion the stock MX5 box is going to be overly strong either? Nore for that matter the box that you will put with the rotor.

Once again as you probably know the familia GTR motors had some forged internals, and a turbo thats approx x2 the size of the gtx one. So if it can be dropped in it probably wouldnt be a bad option. FWD to RWD I dont know how you will go.

But back to which car to get. Really, if pratcially isnt an issue go the MX5. Just keep in mind stuff like rain, wet track days, etc etc. And roll bars will help, but it still aint a roof :D . So if you dont mind getting your seats wet, have no need for more than 2 seats or 2 doors, dont really need much of a boot etc. Then the mx5 is probably the way to go. If not Id be looking at the EVO thing a bit more.

with the gearbox, we were planning to put either a 5sp supra box or rx7 box in, both of which are pretty strong and can take a bit of abuse.

with regards to the familia engine. i think the only issue wit the transplant would be the mounts. the engines themselves arent too different. if i managed to get a BPD, and put it in a 1996 model (1.8 with popup headlights) i dont think there would be too many problems. they are the same engine block really. the familia has the bpd while the mx5 only has a bp. so i dont think there would be any issues there except making new mounts.

i'm looking at purchasing a racing hardtop from bullet, they are about 4500 (1500 more than stock ones) but have extra supports (i think its like a mini roll cage) built into the roof and heavy duty latches in case you do flip it. i will also install the rollover bars as well and racing harnesses. also, they do have a soft top standard so rain isnt really an issue?

Because Rohan, they are more like $60k than $16k :)

Yeah, true. but they are cool. how about a gts-t they rocks, can get a high powered one for 16k... or spend 11 and then 5k straight out.

but on a more serious note.

GTR - French for Not even your mum is this crazy.

I didnt think they were much quicker then a gts-t until i was in a high tuned one.....

gts-t it is the baby brother can go quick but dont try to out do one in racing. mind you they are still bonkers to drive at high speed corners.

mx5 - bang for bucks nice car just make sure you dont make it too front heavy, the 06/07 ones are quick.

evo - like a 4 door GTI-R, mitsubishi got the nail on the head. quick car, set up right can do some insane lap times.

I like the idea of turbo-ing the stock engine, dont have to spend much, and can spend money elsewhere.

that was very well put. but with that in mind i'm gonna have to rule out the evo. already owned a gtir, looking for something very different, not similar.

Ahh yes i forgot about that.

some more info.

R34GTT - always liked these but they were still a bit big for me, have all the mod cons and warranty sometimes, got the engine backin, but not something you can throw around a track quickly.

Series 5 Rx7 - My brother had one, love the rotary, didnt like the car. I much prefer the series 6 on the fd shape.

i wanted an FD more than anything, but then i saw the price tag :) *walks away crying* if i could afford one i would buy it, they are the essence of hotness!

no, i think i've settled on the original idea of the mx-5. still not sure on what i'm doing with the engine though. would love a 13btt in it (20btt exceeds the power to weight ratio set by QT, bastards!) but it seems like its going to be a lot of hassle.

Officer: Now son a 20b has 3 not 2. so whats the go?

You: It is a 13btt officer i swear, see 1,2 and a half, thats just the timing case with the timing chain not another rotor....honest.

haha you'll be right. :S

the mx5 sounds like a plan, should be good to see a hotted up one.

lol, nice, i could actually see myself saying that to him "no, i swear its a fake, for rice effect!"

thats an understatement! i have already sourced the widebody for it

have to order it from japan, just under 4k :) but looks damn fine :)

i was just browsing through mx5mania.com and they have forged pistons for under 1k and turbo kits for less than 3k. so for 5k roughly i could be running 20psi through the stock engine :O probably make about 200 rwkw in a 900kg car ;)

    • The fab work can be as simple as a couple of silicon hoses and clamps to the factory piping.
    • Just sounds like either way you need to do some fab work to get everything to fit, so why limit yourself at that point? If the GCG high flow option is zero effort in and out swap though I'd probably do that. It's almost certainly lowest risk, lowest cost, etc. The HKS GTIII-RS option that Kapr mentioned is laughably expensive for what it is, they charge the exact same for two turbos on the RB26 so their margins are off the charts on that thing.
    • Intake manifold is not a part of the issue. The turbo bolts to the exhaust manifold. That is easy. But close your eyes and picture the physical situation. That is a T3 flange on the manifold and a T3 flange on the turbo. As long as any new turbo has a T3 flange on the exhaust housing, that exhaust housing will bolt to the exhaust manifold. This places the exhaust housing in the same place as the stock one. But now move your mental attention a little further forward. The location of the compressor housing is set by the length of the turbo's core. The stock turbo had a long core. Let's say that it is..... 100mm long. So that would place the compressor housing 100mm forward of the exhaust housing. But a highflow, might well have a centre core that is shorter. Let's say that it is only 70mm long. Now the compressor housing will be 30mm further back in the engine bay than the stock one. This DOES move the turbo's compressor outlet backwards. It also moves the compressor's inlet backwards. You will very likely have to do some work to both the inlet and outlet piping to make everything connect again. I am not say this to make it out to be a bigger deal than it is. I am just pointing out that "bolt on" is sometimes not quite bolt on. The highflow from GCG that Murray linked above (https://gcg.com.au/turbo-charger-upgrade-skyline-gtst-2iu-xtrgts-s1.html ) uses a core that is the same length as the stock core, and so does not require this extra work. It will look very much like the stock turbo. No-one uses GTR turbos of any flavour (stock, or aftermarket) in a single turbo application on RB20/25. It's not a thing. Yes, people have been putting on GT3076, GTX3076 (and bigger and smaller versions of those) and G30s (of various sizes) onto RB20/25 since forever. But these are not "bolt on". Everything except the 4 bolts to the exhaust manifold change with these. And genuine Garretts are expensive. Non-gen, like Pulsar, etc, are cheaper, variously as good or nearly as good. But still not bolt on. No-one in the right mind would pay for an HKS turbo. Not in this modern day and age. Well, yes, the GCG highflow. You could ask HG what he can do to make the compressor housing sit in the original location. There are surely others doing highflows around the world. And some of the eBay/Temu ones (as reported by Dose) work and don't die. Bit of a lottery though. I would send your turbo to GCG (here in Oz) to be highflowed if you want a trivial no-extra-work option. But seriously, the work required to change inlet and outlet piping is not that hard. That's a boost control problem, not a turbo problem.
    • Thank you all for the replys 🙂 I know that intake would be different but that is one pipe at it is not that hard to get(custom one). I meant mainly bolt to the stock manifold and the turbo elbow. I looked and many sites/forums but they are just "old" with some old HKS turbos from GT-R i guess? What about some Garrets?  Or any other turbo? Is there even a turbo which i can just bolt on? 😄 And yeah i know about that new HKS but that is like 2000k USD without taxes/shipping in here   Iam getting a touch up tune but my "problem" is that on the "not" hot day iam getting peaks around 0,9 bar...and when it was around 15 Celsious i saw peak around 1 bar which is just too much for stock turbo. And of course turbo is old and i like to get some new one for a piece of mind 🙂
    • I'm working on the assumption that our friend Jasmine here is a Russian (or, possibly Ukrainian) spammer/spambot, based purely on the number of such that I have been having to neuter in the last few weeks. IP address for the OP above was in WA. But that could have been via VPN. Posting at quarter to 4 in the morning is a good sign of being from somewhere in Europe. The last Jasmine that I kicked in the cooch was IP addressed in Ukraine. Even that could have been via VPN, and the bitchbot could have been from Russia, Serbia, China or anywhere. Regardless, was a spambot, so I killed it with fire. The fact that our new friend Jasmine here did not respond in any way to my tart query strongly suggests to me that this OP was just the establishment phase of a user able to be activated for spamming in a week, or 3 or 10.
