You can get newer 96/97 Series 2 Skylines for under $20k. Like this one is a auto but its in NSW: Skyline 96 Auto

or this one is a manual in bris: Bris Skyline

I didn't realise some 96/97 S2 Skylines are so cheap if you have a look at www.carsales.com.au they are really cheap. Like $18k for a 96 Auto Turbo. Bargain.

Yeah i jus still don't get the 'sidewall' thing....?

Thanks also for the thoughts on what i should get. I will prob take a family friend round wit me who is a good mechanic, to help out.

Next question: what's the difference between an 'SR' and 'RB' engine? And all of those numbers on the end, or which come with it?

Like i said at the start, i'm kinda new to all this so....

SR is a 4cyl from silvia and in a few others too, RB engines are in skylines, vl turbo common hore, cefiro etc... the numbers refer to the capacity... then the letters after that mean stuff too :D

so SR20DET = 4cyl, 2.0l, D= dual overhead cams, E = fuel injected (i think) and T = turbo..

so RB25DE = 6 cyl 2.5l non turbo DOHC

Well done skyline fan for your frank admission. I know jack about cars to i guess but am always willing to learn...I would be keen to hear how you go about getting your car and may pick your brain later as to your strategies and suggestions. Could prove to be a good learning curve mate.

Chaos...all I can say is "what the..." for your saying of the week

go to www.supercars.net for wallpapers. they've got heaps of cars there, plus skylines.

engine code for GTR is rb26dett, which stands for Race Bred 2.6 litres Double overhead camshafts, Electronic fuel injection Twin Turbo.

not sure what SR stands for, but the ending bit's the same. cept it's not twin turbo.

um okay....i'm kinda followin most of this......thanks to everyone who has put stuff in so far btw.

Readin' some of the posts this mornin' on this thread and some of the 'jargon' (i'd guess u'd call it) is still kinda confusin me......like camshafts and 'dissy' (????). I guess i can't get u guys to explain 'everything' unless i ask for a specific term.

Thanks to 'speed freak' as well for his comments. Like i said, I'm new to this forum thing, but i'm not gonna come on here and try and kid myself, let alone everyone else, that i'm some 'car guru' or somethin, when i'm definately anything but. I'll definately keep youse updated on how the car hunt is goin, and collect thoughts and stuff along the way

You'll prob see me on here frequently neway, askin about one car part or another so......

Btw, is it so bad to have an auto?

    • Pretty sure it is a common fault. I believe this is the only part you need, but don't quote me as I don't have a V36.  I also believe it is a bit of a pain to change and the device needs to be encoded to the car once it is replaced, so may need someone with the right tools. • Pads for R32 GTS-t, R32 GT-R non V-Spec (Sumitomo), R33 GTS-t and R34 GT-t are all interchangeable. R34 GT uses a 2x piston caliper, hence it didn't fit.
    • Checked with amayama and nope, the full S2 manual set is not available anymore. Unsurprising, but still disappointing as the ? on availability gave a glimmer of hope.
    • I've heard the Tomei USA head gaskets are decent if you want to o-ring the heads but otherwise not recommended.
    • The 296mm rotors are the R33 turbo brakes. The 310mm rotors are the R34 turbo brakes. The calipers are nearly the same, but not. They're the same caliper but the R34 caliper has longer legs so that it sits out far enough to go over the rotor. The pads are the same for both. When you say, "I bough tsome EBC"....did you just mean pads? Or rotors? 310mm rotors fit under 17" wheels. There may be some wheels without enough clearance though. I can't fit my fingers between the barrel of my wheel and the "corners" of my R34 calipers, but there is plenty of room behind the spokes. This is on Enkei RPF1. You can fit 324mm rotors inside a 17" wheel, but I'd be willing to bet that it would be close to impossible with the Nissan/Sumitomo caliper (using an adapter, of course), because the Sumitomo caliper is fatter than the Brembo caliper that is supposed to go on the 324mm rotors.
