Hi everyone

Didnt know where to post my intro, theres no new members subforum.

Well i currently drive a Toyota Celica SX 1990 model, which i thought was the best for the money. Now im looking at upgrading to something in the $10000 price point. Seems like a good opportunity for me, since i will be getting full licence in 3 months and have found a decent part-time job to support the beast. Have narrowed it down to either the Celica GT4 5th gen or the R32 gts-t. The skyline seems to be the winner in this point in time. Its got the looks, availability of parts, average labour costs, seems fuel efficient for a turbo engine, seems reliable. Well thats the idea i got from reading on this forum. I love the famous skyline taillights.

For the gt4 its quite the opposite compared to the skyline. Does however have the rarity.

In this forum i will mostly be helping out ppl in the car audio section, which is my hobby, and i have a fair knowlegde of it. I have done all fibreglass work in my car, which turned out quite nice ;) If anyones interested, i will post some pics. You can see abit of it in my sig

So ye thats about it

haha, that middle pic was done with photoshop. Exaggerated wheel size and lowered regiculously low. The car actually has stock wheels.

Only mods is k&n pod filter and hurricane muffler, and sound system of course. Sound is the main feature of my car. Id like to change that, to turbo being main feature :D , with the r32.

This is the real deal:

Hmm i had a big toss up between a GT4 and a Skyline as well. The GT4 isn't much slower, maybe .2-.3 on the quarter, but it's pretty heavy and it's alot harder to find mods/information about it. The other problem was a serious lack of good nick ones, probably because theres not as many around. I also wanted the GT4 for originality, but i mean R33 is the car everyone and there dog has, R32's aren't as common (at least near where i live) Ohhh and the front looks ok but the curves on the rear bumper of the GT4 was a huge turnoff!

Ne ways, welcome

hmmm, really. I was told stock gt4's do low 16's in 1/4 mile, which is pretty slow. The r32 does 14.8 or so. I understand this is when they r new, but still its a good comparison and probably not far off from wat the r32 can do now, especially considering there is not many stock r32's around.

I guess id have to drive both and see. Ive been in a 3sgte powered celica sx. That was a crazy car, but sadly its still fwd, which wat turns me off in doing the conversion.

i think a r32 aswell, it is very hard to find a celica in good nick as someone said... i was looking for about 2 months with no luck

ended up buying an r33 which i dont regret =) not a fan of 4wd

unless of course its a gtr

Yeah you are correct, GT4's are not as quick as r32 gts-t's. For a start a GT4 will be pushing to do 0-100km/h in under 7 seconds (that is the Rallye edtn which is the top model and faster by my understanding, so a normal GT4 will be slower)... A 32 gts-t will do it in 6.5 secs.

And before you say they are factory times, i bought my gts-t over a year ago (so it was 13yrs old at the time), with no mods other than a cat back exhaust which was terrible and cheap and more than likely lost power over the stock system, and using a g-tech meter i did 0-100km.h in 6.57secs

Good luck with your search for a 32, but personally i'd be budgeting a little more than $10,000 to find a good example otherwise you could be in for a lot more money down the track... but see how you go! Keep us posted!

i rekon u'll get a piece of crap 32 for 10k man....id keep saving if i were u. u'll def need money for all the bits and pieces u'll prolly need to fix.

the GT4 is no match for the r32, harder to launch, slower 0-100 and slower 1/4 mile.... chek out the review from The Age newspaper:

http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleD...=10518&vf=1

the r32 is the way to go, eaaasy to extract extra power too.

wohoo! another one converted

edit: oh and for around 10k you can get some decent r32's :O

my r33 96 s2 was only $12,200 8 months ago!! mint condition 85,000k's

theres some r32's in the for sale section going for close to $10000, so its possible. Im in no rush. I will find one at my price point, just have to be patient.

EDIT:

However, i would pay $11000-12000 for something as clean as this:

That is exactly how i want it to look.

Im planning to buy in 6-12months time, until then, im researching.

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
    • If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.
