Is yours a Series 2 stagea ? i recently retro fitted mine back to xenon after they were removed during compliance, bought bulbs (factory bulbs are D2R HIDs) and D2R harness, from ebay in USA, then wired them into the ballast which is attached to the back of the headlights. now back to factory stock.

For a bit of technical guff - xenon is an inert gas. When you pass a very high voltage through the gas at low pressure, it produces an intense, brilliant flash of light. The colour of the glow is the same as the gas's spectral lines when viewed through a spectroscope. In Xenon's case - blue. Which is why they look blue when coming at you from a distance, as opposed to the bulbs you buy at supercheap which are just a white light shining through blue glass.

Neon is also an inert gas that glows red when you pass electricity through it.

Many camera flashes have xenon gas in a small tube - which is why you need levelling adjusters on the Stagea, because to 'flash' a driver coming in the opposite direction is like setting a camera flash off in their face - not good for visibility. I believe ADR's make them illegal to import as the levelling adjusters aren't automatic.

So all this is to simply explain why it has a ballast like fluro bulbs - to create a high enough voltage charge.

Whilst on the topic of Xenon lights, my car will be getting complied in a few days. As they will be replaced, what is the best way to save them? Ie: I want to put them back on after the vehicle is complied so how should i tell the compliance guy to cut the wiring or whatever they do to replace the light? I want to be able to easily just put it back on.

I hope im kind of making sense here?

just tell them that you want to ise the xenons after the compliance. ask them to cut the wire properly so that you can rewire it back easily. i think a few guys here have done it before.

"because to 'flash' a driver coming in the opposite direction is like setting a camera flash off in their face - not good for visibility."

-Just to correct you on this point, the high beams are in the grill and normal hb3 12v 60w globes, the xenons dont go off like a camera flash they stay at the same luminosity.

-I dont believe they are illegal either, looking at an an 'old' book with a roadwothy section says 'when the lights are dipped, the top of the higher intensity portion of the light at a distance of 7.6m must not be higher that the centre of the lamp.' other than that is says they should have an effective range of 25m and dip toward the left.

Check the vic/qld/nsw...roads website or go into the office, they should have up to date info, go find out the legal stuff from the correct source not by what you are simply told.

So i guess if the manual adjustment of these is not set outside of those stipulations and shining in the face of an oncoming driver, they should be fine.

I've seen them on a few r34's, stagea's including my own which have been complianced fairly recently in vic.

May I suggest people have been mislead, and a few mechanics got a free xenon setup.

fwiw factory hid's are 4300k, which is close to the colour of daylight and is the brightest. they look blue generally by the refraction of the light as being cut off by the sheild as it goes through the projector, kinda of like how u make rainbows with glass blocks and lights in highschool science...

as far as i'm aware for it to be legal in australia it has to have auto leveling and headlights washers to clean off any bugs that fly itno them and might cause someone to b blinded, well thats the only reason i can think of. i think police should crack down on hid kits as the bulbs dont sit correctly in the housing and blind the hell out of oncomming traffic, plus if u look at the light they are putting out it would actully make it harder for htem to see anything, as it makes the bright spots brighter and thats about it.

i have some e46 unit's retrofitted into the 7" lights on my car and haven't had any issues with them from cops going through boose busses etc, but i have them aimed down pretty low so they dont blind people. a hell of an upgrade from sealed beams...now to upgrade the engine

ive never had an issue with the zennons and oncoming traffic and the high beam lights are seperate on the s2 and are halogen to flashing another car isnt a problem

Xenons are illegal .. You need projectors and auto leveling to use them..

Technically all that happens when the remove them is the ballast is removed and the original wires soldered together to get a direct 12v charge and a halogen hole put in..

I just bought new ones yesterday (including new headlights - $400 installed, cheap as!) for the R34 .. Needs to be adjusted but look impressive so far...

great stuff  so yes illegal but everyone has them .. the car comes standard with it so technically its not a mod

Sorry matie no can do .. but imported them from japan nissan

however you can easily do a reconversion .. just need a ballast and xenon light holder and globe .. and a soldering iron .. if u remove the light you will see the soldered wires de-solder these solder the ballast to them open the light remove the halogen lamp and light and replace with xenon.. Id say using a after market item would work fine .. but check out the kit first to work it out

I mean can see why not * I know this is all you have to do as ive compared old to new lights i got :P

Hi all,

Sorry to dig up an old topic :w00t: My S2 will be on a ship soon ( :turned: ) and I want to save my xenons... this topic showed up most promising in my searching. The compliance guy has basically said that they get butchered, and that it's not possible to install the halogen kit without ruining the xenon setup, basically suggested I should do it myself... so I was just wondering if anyone had any photos (I think someone asked earlier in the thread) of the 'ballast' unit (sounds more like a DC-DC converter?) and globe mounting arrangement, especially of a S2 with the halogen kit installed? Anybody know what hardware I'll need, and where to get it?

Thanks for any pics!

Why dont you beg to the compliance guy to leave them alone, or at least not to cut the ballast harness, ive known some compliance shops to leave them alone on request. Mine was also butchered, I had to take out the headlight assemblies, buy new bulbs D2R's i think, new bulb harnesses and wire them into the old ballasts. He is lying when he says that they have to be ruined, it is possible to halogenize them without interfering too much with the xenons. At least get him to save your bulbs...or take it to different compliance shop.

If the ballast harness is cut (by compliance), and then re-resoldered (by one of us) would it affect the workings of the unit at all? A few people on here have mentioned once its been cut, it then cannot work again. Can someone shed some light on this? :nyaanyaa:

Cheers

mine was cut very close to the ballast, so the 3 wires(+ve, -ve, safety) were unusable. I bought a D2R harness(make sure it has good length wires>10cm), which came with the high voltage wires. I took the ballast lid off and soldered the new wires onto the old, making sure to insulate the join well. The inside of the unit is encased with a silicon/rubber insulation, had to dig some of this out to get to the wires/solder joins, re seal it all with silicon, lid back on with sealant. There is also a safety wire, to prevent the unit operating without the bulbs in place in case you go sticking your finger in to the bulb seat. This needs to be overidden since we are not using the factory harness, i had to earth/or power(high voltage power) this wire ??, cant remember exactly, easy enough to test on the bench, try earthing it firstly then power on this 3rd wire, see which one lights up the bulb (high voltage ! use caution). You then jumper this 3rd wire onto the correct wire, depending on your test results. Of course dont forget to connect the 12v and earth input wires. Has worked brilliantly since. You would be amazed at the difference, just the way NISSAN intended, before i couldnt see S#$& at night.

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
