Hey guys,

Looking at buying a HKS TO4E, was wondering if that is a good responsive turbo for an RB25. I heard a history of lag and bodgy response from these turbos? Are these direct bolt ons, i am aware that you need oil n coolant lines but do u have to change intake pipe, dump pipe etc.

thanks

john

Dont.

There are much better turbos out there.

HKS GTRS, 2835 or from the garrett catalogue 3071 IW or 3076IW.

These are all modern turbos that will fit your stock manifold and outperform your stock fuel system. 3 need a custom dump pipe and lines, the gtrs will fit the stock dump flange

For $1000 u cant go wrong. I have most of supportin mods like big injectors, pump, fmic, full xhuast but standard internal.

These also come with oil n coolant lines so its a good deal. Dump pipe wont cost me more than $250, though shouldnt it bolt straight to my rb25 t3 manifold.

cheers

john

It's your money, but i could think of a few other things i'd have with 1k.

Just confirm that it's internal gate.

I'd be inclined to spend the (roughly) 1700 on the 3071 or 3076 myself but, like i said, It's your money.

You asked for opinion, and then for 1k you say you cant go wrong?

Sounds like your mind is already made up >_<

But im with BHDave. Waste of money, there are far better options out there that dont even cost much more.

Get a hi-flow if you want response. The t04e at a rough stab isnt going to be on till 4500rpm and even then peak power will be average compared to something that is actually using current designs

I had a Garrett t04e, simply put it was shithouse.

The GT30 Garrett i stuck on there after was better in every way possible.

i thought a to4e would be responsive cause its smiilar design to t3/t4 highflow? i will end up spend 1400 for this new turbo put it costs 1700 plus just for the turbo alone if 3071 or 3076 etc etc- lookin at 2600 including modifcations to support and fabricaiton.

the turbo t04e has been rebuilt by ATS, however its a HKS compressor.

thanks

john

If similar in design you mean they both use 1970's technology, then yeah. They are similar in design.

How is a GT30x going to cost 2600 including mods? The turbo costs 1700 and its a bolt on affair.

Either way, its your money dude. Two people now have told you it wont be anything special.

And thats just how it is if you like it or not.

That HKS spec T04E is not a T3/T04E hybrid its a full "T04E" meaning it's got a heavy T4 turbine and in its smallest trim size - 62T AKA "N" trim . Its compressor is 57 trim which is not real small either . Any full T04E turbo is going to be big/heavy/not very responsive .

Also a lot od misinformation on what a "T3/T04E" really is . When built in America they use the TB31 turbine (NOT some ancient small series T3 turbine from Nissans RB30/FJ20/280ZXT/Z18 ) . The TB31 turbines are ~ 64mm OD not 59mm like our early Nissan/Garrett T3 turbines . If you used the TB31 turbine with a med trim T04E turbine ie 50 trim they can work reasonably well . Garrett actually make turbos called from memory TA34's and they do work , I seem to remember posting picks on this board of the "TA34-1" so do a search on that . It runs a .58 A/R turbine housing in T3 flange and the word is they work reasonably well depending on your expectations . I did see one at Turbologic (Port Kembla) and Fred did say the RB20 people thought they were a good cheap upgrade though that was a few years back .

I wouldn't throw HKS dollars at a T04E when there's noting you can't have built in them . Cheers A .

    • Look for broken wire or bad connector at the motor. Might not be it, but is worth starting there, as it is easy.
    • Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my R32 GT-R. Sometimes, when the car goes over a bump or experiences some vibration, the 4WD warning light comes on the dashboard. When I check the code from the control unit in the trunk, it shows Code 19 – ETS Motor. However, everything seems to be working fine — if I turn off the engine and restart the car, the light goes away and everything functions normally. Has anyone experienced this before? Where should I start troubleshooting this issue? Thanks in advance!
    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
    • 310mm rotors will be avilable from Australia, Japan, and probably a few other places. Nothing for the front can be put on the back.
    • The filter only filters down to a specific size. Add to that, the filter is AFTER the pump. So it means everything starts breaking your pump even if its being filtered out.
