I need some shocks for my R33, and I would like help.

Now I know most people will say "Bilstein Group Buy" but the bottom line is i dont have $1000 for shocks. I have tried to search, and the only other options I have come up with are Koni which are dearer than the Bilsteins, and KYB which are a twin tube. The KYB's I can get for $520 a set, which seems like good value to me, but:

Has anyone used the KYB twin tubes, and how did you find them compared to stock? Are they an improvement or more of a like for like replacement?

Alternatively if anyone knows of any other monotube shocks, please let me know.

I did note on the whiteline site they had their "own" monotube shock, but were $348(f) and $309® +GST. I think this was single shock prices, can anyone confirm?

Im looking to replace the shocks next weekend so some prompt replies would be awesome, thanks!

Lee

You live with yous suspension a long time. If you want to go quick, no matter how much you spend on the engine, you cant go quick without decent suspension. No matter how big your brakes, you cant stop quickly without good suspension. No matter how new your car, you need good suspension to ensure that the thing doesnt fall apart with squeeks etc.

So many different options, but if Bilsteins are too expensive, i suggest replacing one end of the car at a time and doing it in parts. There arent too many bolt in options that are the same price and quality as Bilsteins.

I'm using Bilsteins myself. As Roy said, you shouldn't short-change yourself on suspension. Probably even brand new Nissan replacements would be better than what you have now.

KYBs are a good shock - you could do worse.

Sorry, should have pointed out my current situation. I presently have Tein HR coilovers which were in the car when I bought it. Im looking for something a lot more streetable as at the moment the car really bounces over the rougher rds that I drive on each day. I will be selling these once I am able to replace the suspension.

I have since got some springs (and top hats soon) so now I just need shocks and spring seats. So I have no stock shocks so I need new Front and Rear at once, thus the "one end at a time" option doesn't exist for me.

So has no-one used the KYBs?

Also, do new shocks always come with new spring seats or do I need to source these 2nd hand too?

Shocks and springs are sold seperately so you'll have to buy some new springs or reused your old ones, but in your case with TEIN coilovers you'll need new or second hand springs.

Yup, like I posted I have the springs, I bought some 2nd hand lowered springs. I should be able to get the top hats from the same person, but I need to know about the spring seats where it sits ON the shock :(

Cheers

Gary,

Thanks for that, but as stated above, the bilsteins are out of my price range (read double the KYB's)! I know you get what you pay for, but I am not a "premadonna race driver" as you have referred to in the past, I Just enjoy the car

Do you know anything more about the "Whiteline" shocks, ie. is the price for a single and is it a rebadged bilstein, or is it per pair and another brand?

Cheers

Lee

    • That looks good, but I think you're going to need much beefier side skirts now.
    • They are daft and there's a reason it never caught on. Steering feel? We don't need no stinking steering feel!
    • I gotta pull you up on this. It's driving me crazy. A shutter is something that closes, like over a window or in a cmera. The word you want is shudder. That LSD is clearly f**ked. Take it to a diff shop and get it disassembled and examined by an expert. YOu might have plates welded together or something equally crazy.
    • Define "starting to fail". Wy not just rebuild them?
    • Check the Nistune doco. There are a few assumptions being made here that might not be valid. I will list the things that occur to me: Base map. Base map for what? Base map for Z32? Then the cranking pulse width is probably wrong for an RB25. The extra 500cc of capacity might well be enough to prevent it from catching. Base map for RB25? I don't think you can load one of those into a Z32. You have to just make the settings correct for an RB25 in the Z32 base map. That is either K or the TIM to get the pulsewidth right. Loom. You bought a loom for an RB. And you plugged it into a Z32 ECU. Did you make sure that any iwre differences were swapped. From memory, there's at least a couple. And as per the others, I would suggest making sure that the fuel pressure is correct while cranking and that the injectors are actually flowing as expected. They really must come out and go on the bench, unless you do find that you have messed up as per above points. I would also suggest watching in Nistune to make sure that everything is reading correctly. That the correct binary flags are raised at the right time (like the crank signal), that there's no stupid values in K or TIM. That you have not got mismatched firmware for the ECU and/or a wrong image loaded.
