Disposing of shocks/struts?

How do you guys dispose of old shocks? I have a few I want to get rid off, but they're definitely still holding pressure.

My local council has no info and the tip says No Deal.

Yep, I blessed with the same dilemma before.

No where to recycle, no where to drop them, so into resi waste disposal it went.

I booked a council pick-up for a bunch of stuff and left them out the front, with all rubbish to be picked up, on the top with other bits of scrap metal, the arvo before pick up.

Inevitably the metal scrap guys turn up and take all the metal that arvo.

They must have a deal going cause they certainly know what addresses to show up at !

Drill hole to release pressure. Draw circle around hole with pink paint pen. Put in scrap metal bin/take to scrappy's. Walk away.

There's a little Asian bloke that drives around with a ute all the time. Lucky to have anything vaguely metal left on the footpath within 4 hours.

It was the pressure I was worried about. @GTSBoy does drilling them pose any problems?

Nah. There's not shit tonnes of pressure in there. Just drill with a 1.5mm drill or something equally tiny. When the drill goes all the way through thee gas will start to come out, but with such tiny path through the flutes of the drill bit, it won't be at all dangerous. You can be as paranoid as you like from then on. I'd just pull the drill out while keeping my face out of the line of fire. But then, I spend half my time looking into pressurised furnaces. So my risk acceptance is somewhat higher than most!

If you're friendly with a workshop that has a large scraps bin you can always ask to dispose of there.

Otherwise theres always the places like sims metal etc depending where you are at

Depends on who you ask.

For the large part, you should be fine.

Nissan had us use a special tool on boot gas struts to release the pressure as apparently drilling could be dangerous. Could just be the excess pressure and possibly of blowing swarf into your face.

Normally, we have never worried about releasing pressure before disposal.

Gas springs (ie boot/bonnet struts) will be charged up to about 200 bar. That's a bit scary. Suspension dampers will have maybe 10 bar of N2 pressure, which is just a sneeze, where I come from.

Anyone drilling holes in anything, pressurised or not, without wearing safety glasses deserves swarf in the eyes.
