I'm just about to do my first service on my R32 GTST since it arrived from japan.

The only engine mods it has is a full apexi exhaust.

It still has the factory airbox with a nonbrand name filter inside.

As an apexi filter to go within the factory box is around $80,

i thought i may as well buy an Apexi Pod filter that bolts directly onto the AFM for an extra twenty bucks.

The car has factory computer i dont think its had any tuning done.

It runs superb, so I didnt want to f**k anything up by adding the pod filter.

I'm just asking for peoples thoughts comments or suggestions.

Wether Its better i stick to the factory air box, or chuck this pod filter on?

And if any tuning needs to be done once the pod filter is on there?

exhaust + filter are very minor mods, I think a remap would be an expensive way to gain a couple of kw.

box the pod if you want good performance, otherwise you'll suck in hot air. otherwise stick to the airbox.

the stock ecu can't be tuned without remapping it. if you take it to any random workshop with a dyno and ask them to tune it, there is about a 90% chance all they will do is a power run, and just have a look at the afr's. they probably won't even pop the bonnet.

Hmmm, my R32 GTSt was stock when I got it, I added a dump pipe back 3" exhaust and it went really well. I added a K&N pod with heat shied and it started hesitating when the car came on boost, like I was hitting a fuel/boost cut or something? I've since changed it back to the stok airbox and reset the ECU and it goes better than with the pod.

any tips when making an airbox to fit around the apexi pod?

Materials , dimensions, or anything to take note of?

    • So for the wide band is a Bosch 4.9 correct for the Link G4+ along with a Can bus? Just get the Link gear or is generic ok too? Eg here: LINK LINK DIGITAL WIDEBAND CAN MODULE WITH BOSCH 4.9 SENSOR : KYP Performance House  
    • Bit difficult to follow. Have a look below and see what the standard R32 layout was like. Note there was a restrictor in place immediately before "turbocharged pressure control solenoid" that, if removed, magically got you 1 bar boost.
    • I might be way off the mark here.. there must be a T junction under the manifold. That takes manifold pressure through a check valve prior to the T, one side splits out to this bleed off orifice, the other straight to the wastegate actuators. 
    • Carrying out some engine due diligence before my first drive in a 260RS that has been in storage for 10+ years, and found two lines that are susposed to be plumbed into the boost control solenoid. One of the lines (the wastegate boost supply line) to actuate the gates, had a bolt in one end blocking it. The other line (main boost signal line) from the very rear of the intake manifold (RB26DETT) and runs up to the boost controller had this pill in the end of it as seen in photos. Other than the obvious (T28 Ceramic turbos might well be cooked)  Can anyone shed any light on if there is any validity at all with this mod, bleeding a constant fixed rate of manifold boost pressure off through this 3mm hole?  Is it deliberate?  Was this a 90s Jap mod done to RB26's? Or has someone just fitted this without any idea of what happens to ceramic T28s if they are not gate controlled?
