Last night I popped out to Quix at about 10:30pm and when I got home and put my car in the garage I forgot to turn off the ignition and my car was idling in my garage until 6:30am :)

Usually I just turn ignition off and my turb timer shuts her down after 30secs-1min, but not last night...

It got hot but didnt boil (was pining this morning and running rough)

the garage was locked up so it was sucking down some nasty fumes all night, the entire car was hot aswel, ie the transmission tunnel etc.

so, anyone know if this is a realy bad no no and am I likely to have major problems.

she also drank about $30-$40 of fuel :)

thats sorta pretty funny... only cos I've amost done it myself.... :)

don't think it can really do to much to your car.... but I'm not a mechanic.

probably just hurt your pocket with the lost fuel more than anything.

Why leave it running. Its simply not needed.

Unless you drive flat stick for the last 1km to your house simply turn the car off just before you get out of the car, if you are in the habit of tearing down your street let it idle for 30secs and turn it off. 30secs is usually the time it takes for you to grab your wallet and take your setbelt off anyway.

The turbo's are now watercooled so thermosyphoning continues to cool the turbo when you shut the car down.

I've done this for the last 5.5years and travelled over 175,000km's and never had a turbo failure. Upon inspection of the turbo oil lines and turbo its self there is no oil coking. Use a good grp iv synthetic oil and you are less likely to have issues with oil coking.

I'd simply give it an oil and filter change. Prolonged idling isn't good for the oil or bores due to fuel dilution. Inspect the plugs they may be fouled from prolonged idling.

due for service and dyno now, but clutch is being fitted so I have to bed that in for 300k's before I put it on the rollers, so I spose I can wait another week or 2 before doing oil and filters?

and yeah I know turbo timers are overated but I have it set to 30 seconds only and as my garage is locked up at night I usually leave my keys in ignition, hence my screwup

the car was hot and pinging under light acceleration on mny way out the driveway, a bit of low speed crusing and temps dropped back to normal (my car seems to run quite hot on idle or in traffic at the best of times)

cheers, for the piece of mind tho guys, I was a little concerned that there would be potential issues with overcooking sensors and turbo oil seals etc...

do what those guys said above i suppose. also i was thinking of resetting your computer so that it learns from preschool how you drive and the environment it is in. it would of been sucking in all that low oxygenated air causing many many things as well, hence maybe your reason for pinging....

yep thats what ive herd aswell. personally im not a fan of idling, even when the car is cold in the mornings, just start it, get comfy, find a good radio station and go, usualy just keep it under 3000rpms until it gets to operating temp.

but you only left it on over night once, not like you do it every week, i wouldnt worry about it too much, maybe check/clean ur plugs...

Prolonged idling will only glaze the bores if it hasn't been run in and or the mixtures are rich. BTW resetting the ECU will do absolutely f**k all. You may have a few carbon build ups within the chambers that is causing hot spots and leading to detonation. Put it this way the more it pings the less carbon there will be in the chamber but your bearing will get a hammering. Just give it a long light load drive and see if it comes up ok.

    • For once a good news  It needed to be adjusted by that one nut and it is ok  At least something was easy But thank you very much for help. But a small issue is now(gearbox) that when the car is stationary you can hear "clinking" from gearbox so some of the bearing is 100% not that happy... It goes away once you push clutch so it is 100% gearbox. Just if you know...what that bearing could be? It sounding like "spun bearing" but it is louder.
    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve. 
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
