you can take the gearbox out of a r33 gtst 96

without having to undo engine mounts or jack up motor to silly angles as with some cars as there is not enuf room near the firewall to rectract gearbox from engine?

i have many problem with other cars and almost easier to take motor out for clutch replacement

help would be greatly appreciated :)

the box can be a bit of a pain to get out. the trans tunnel is a bit tight. so it may help to loosen the engine mounts to allow you to lever the engine to help get the box out. it also helps to roll the box as you take it out and put it back in.

yike!

so will i need to take off exhausts(or losen it) and other stuff that mounts the motor to a fixed position?

eg,intercooler lines,hoses and radiator hoses too? :)

and rolling sounds like a good challenge for a one person job it got lol

Yes.

Remove exhaust. Some of your intake piping may need to be removed, eg if you have stock airbox.

I have a 1m extension bar and put another 30cm on the end of that, put uni joint on front with socket. Go back near the rear of your box and feed the contraption up to the top of the bell housing. Get your chinese friend or gf to put the socket on the bolts for you.

How do u know he has a chinese friend or gf?

Because he types as such. :)

But yes..

put the car up on jack stands,

remove exhaust, tailshaft, starter motor, wires/plugs/slave cyl on the gearbox,

tie a hydraulic jack with wheels to the rear of the gearbox,

jack under the front of the gearbox,

drop the rear of the gearbox slightly angling the motor backwards,

big extension bars, remove bell housing bolts

Then u and a friend either side on your backs slide the gearbox out turning it clockwise so the starter motor bell housing lump clears the floor pan.

Lower jacks evenly slide gearbox back chock the box up so it doesn't roll over and replace clutch.

Then put it all back together again. :)

I hate doing this job. its a pain in the ass without a houst and i never want to do it again. i would rather pay someone else $300 to do it.

did it with 2 mates helping me get the old box out and it was easy. getting the bastard back in myself was a different story. the starter buldge gets in the way of the trans tunnel you need to have the box on the spline just and rotate it so the buldge is closer to the ground and then wiggle till you feel it start to go on. then start to jack up the rear of the box and line it up and jiggle it on.

try not to drop the box on your arm they are damn heavy.

This sounds like fun !!!!!! Nothing to do ona saturday, just whip ya box out, clutch and pressure plate and replace flywheel with light weight billet flywheel then throw back together.Oh hang on, did that last saturday what fun ,Sunday was bored so pulled the diff out cause it was making a noise got the job down pat now, just dont wanna do it again

me and my mate did the old back yard clutch change on his 200 sx and it was a pain in the arse for 2 people. u need to take a couple of things off yes. i wouldnt do it by my self for sure, any thing could happen and remember to use really good jack stands not those cheap kmart one son.

    • Sorry, are coilovers ACTUALLY ILLEGAL in NSW? They aren't in Vic, as long as they retain 70% of stock travel and the car is above 100mm off the ground. Does NSW actually have a law making coilovers actually illegal? RWC/Blue Slip/Engineering people not knowing the actual f**king laws boils my blood. Demand them to point to the documentation that states a coilover is illegal. (it may exist in NSW )
    • But seriously, can we ask for the results of the "tip a bottle of metho into a nearly empty tank" experiment?
    • Hang on. Let me get this straight. The desire is to have coilovers, BC in particular, to be MORE comfortable on Sydney roads than stock suspension? Well, that's obviously not right. BCs have crude damping design at the very best, and typically hard spring rates. BC stands for Billy Cart. And then, the desire is to put in some shitty old worn out stockers, to get it blue slipped and then put the BCs back in? And then.....what? Not worry about getting pulled up by the Plod? Because you seem to have raised a worry about paying for engineering (which actually does solve all your legality problems) and still getting pulled up.... but the only problem there is that if/when that happens you have to show your paperwork at the inspection station. Whereas, if you just swap in borrowed shitty old stockers to get it slipped now, and then you get defected in the future, you have to go find more shitty old stockers then too. You course of action looks like this set of options: Buy brand new stock type dampers, and springs. probably cost a bit more than $1k all up, but will last for the remaining life of the car. Put them in, pass inspection, drive on them forever more. Hell, they could even be really nice Bilsteins and Kings or other lower&stiffer springs if you wanted. Get the car engineered as is. ~$1k. Buy new Shockworks coilvers (or MCA) and also pay for engineering. You're spending a lot more here. But these will be the best things that you could drive around on.
    • Might be worthwhile hitting up Facebook's groups, I know most of them contain terrible people and scammers - however you might be able to find someone that's in Sydney with factory suspension you could purchase and/or hire. Just do not send any form of money anywhere, in person cash only.
