My turbo is broke it appears (makes a funny noise and no boost pressure apparent) and I've had car only a short while. I forgot to change air filter when I bought and it turns out to be filthy. Whether this is the cause or not I am told by a turbo reconditioner that it is a possible cause.

Nissan here in Rotorua (NZ) don't have any experience of this model and are suggesting an engine out in order to remove situation which will prove drastic to my finances.

Has anyone here got any idea of an easier way of removing the turbo for inspection purposes?

it should be possible to remove it without taking it out of the car.

the high pitched whistle.. have you had it re-cornfirmed by someone that it IS the turbo ?

some cheap intercoolers give you that " china whistle "

just saw the comment about no boost pressure.. could be split hose?

remove the pipe inlet and have a look with a mirror if necessary, removval of the rear dump will do thesame.

problem is access to bolts at front on turbo is proving impossible in order to remove it

problem developed over weekend I was up Mt Ruapehu and it was sounding rough on mountain road when I backed off the accelerator

got back to Rotorua and it packed up on Sunday

also the car refused to start at end of day up on the mountain and I had to roll all the way back down to Ohakune

17 km's downhill all the way

Hmmn.. I'm still unconvinced it's a turbo failure, pretty unusual in a new car like this - Like suggested before, first thing would be to pull inlet & exhaust off it and have a good look at it, spin it if you can. Does it blow any smoke under boost or when cold? I'm sure you can remove it with the engine in car. Even in my 300zx TT which if anyone has ever owned one, you can't even SEE the turbos under the engine bay, are possible to remove with the engine in place. Fair enough it's easier sometimes to drag the engine to give yourself more room, but maybe source a service manual for the M35 and read the Nissan procedure.

Anyone know what sort of snail these V6 engines use?

Does your car blow any smole at all after it warms up? Black smoke you will need only a tune up. If white smoke then the turbo is buggered. Wgen you step on it does it give a black puff of smokes at the back of the car?

If your car is stock standard it is very unlikely for the turbo to be shagged. Also check the manifols whether there are any signs og oil seeping on the manifols itselfs.

If all else fails get it into a worskshop that is familiar with nissan engine.

The air filter was filthy and may have been OEM

I'm told by turbo experts here that this is a possible cause of turbo failure

That little Jap girl's voice in my car seems to pick up on an emptying fuel tank (and so does the screen) so why not cry out for more air?

So far I have paid $NZ 600 to have a $30 air filter replaced that I could do myself. Better than forking out 5 grand unnecessarily though.

It drove me back to Auckland alright yesterday and the gas consumption is improved (9.6 km's/l, 500 km's on less than 3/4 of a tank) but that may be down to my just having to lay off the thrills.

I will seek out some experts here this week and maybe Nissan Japan and keep you posted.

    • forgot to mention that when it does this it does not kill the engine, but I have not kept the pedal down long enough to let it, as I see no reason to beat up on it as its got to be something simple, small and dumb causing this.  And as soon as I let off pedal, the engine returns to its normal super smooth operation and rpms re-stabilize quickly, once below 4k. 
    • neither stumble or cut really seem to be an appropriate term....hard to explain its like a rev limiter but at 4k, but it violently shakes engine and entire vehicle as the rpms will not rise over 4k, even with slow acceleration. as soon as it hits 4k, it sounds like entire spark is lost entirely. plugs were 1.1 which I used as such, but later put in new plugs gapped down to .8 changed back after issue arose when I replaced the coils, still does it with either plug gap...damn and it was all running so good.
    • Oh how times have changed! I actually lean it out relative to my water/methanol injector duty cycle. The methanol adds a lot of fueling and you can then lean it out even more due to reduced knock. 
    • Yeah my thoughts are the same, a well thought out WMI setup, would be slightly ahead of just straight E85 and you're also chemically intercooling the charged air, dropping it even further. This is why you need to add so much more fuel as soon as you spray. I remember someone taking me through their set up before (Dennis, has a R33, lives around Cabramatta - no idea if he's still around on this forum). He would target AFR 10:1 on 98, then as WMI ramped on, AFR would lean back up to 11:1. Amazingly, he did this all through his PowerFC, a relay to cut power to his EBC solenoid if there was not enough line pressure on his WMI kit. And of course, if there wasn't any boost made above gate pressure, you wouldn't be accessing the load cells with heaps of timing for WMI. One downside to that rudimentary setup, once the WMI came on, the EBC would unleash the dragon, and of course all the timing. Tyres would fry lol.
