hey

just wondering whats the best way to get better fuel economy

i put a bov on the other day and since then i get 45k's to 10 bucks and i hardly give it the boot but i could feel it had more power

now taking it off im back to my 10 bucks to 100k's but can i get even better?

also the bov i used was a gfb basic

would a gfb hybrid or turbosmart dual port be more fuel economic?

need some tips n tricks!

since i got the car ive done these things (the car is fully stock standard)

changed oil (crap valvoline xld in it FFS!) to pennzoil gt performance 10-40 semi synth (gotta change every 5thou k's or 3 months so im not going expensive stuff cause $40 for 5ltrs is enuff)

put a jamex sports panel filter in (felt a touch more power from changing the stock paper 1 to that)

and changed fuel filter

now if there is anything i can do in these regards

A: get more power but keep the fuel economy near the same

or

B: get better economy full stop how it is

thanks for inputerers

man seriously if u wanted a fuel economical car then u should have bought a little 1.5 litre 4 cyclinder.

And the more power u want the more fuel u r gonna be using, more air + more fuel = more power.

U can always drive like a granny and change gears before getting onto boost.

stupid isent it that people still believe that BOV's give u more power!!

No need for such a comment, his original BOV may have been cactus and leaking something chronic (nothing lasts forever and 10 years out of a valve with high cycle life is a pretty big expectation)

If so , a bit more go under boost could be expected.

Anyway as for poor fuel economy, im getting about 480-510kms a tank, i driver rather sedately. If the drop in economy is bothering you that much, try some new plugs and a bottle of injector cleaner.

Always makes a difference on my car, but usually only noticeable for about 4 tanks of gas, then i start to get slight misfire, reduced economy etc. I think my car runs fairly rich so spark plugs are quickly past their best.

get it fixed and put new high tention spring in it! I did it to mine and it runs perfect now, way better that with the blitz bov i had 2

the best remedy for fuel economy is to stagger days you drive the skyline. carpool, or consolodate trips to the market, etc. swap the flywheel for an aluminum one as well as the crank pulley. make the engine easier to turn any way you can. use lightweight rims. do not use the air conditioning - ever. get a carbon fiber hood. use aluminum brake calipers. change the plugs evey six months. keep the tires properly inflated. ensure clean air passages. create a business out of your home office and commute six feet to work.

have a party. dress in a gorilla suit. wear a tuxedo to a skating rink. invent a new device. learn to sing backwards.

Ok, smack me on the side of the head, and excuse me for asking but are we sure it cn be done, its not a wallet lightening ploy.

It actually made a difference??? How can you be sure. Curious, i have an OE RB20 BOV laying around, i might rip mine apart and give it a go.

Serious?? BOVs cause sh#t fuel consumption? Ive never thought about it.

I use to get 450-520km when i first got the car (stock BOV) but now im lucky with 350km and currently its half tank and im on 144km!!!!!!!! Ive now got a TurboSmart V-Port II (sounds wicked) but could it be the cause of bad consump?!

I got 510kms this morning before i filled up (Monday morning ritual). About 200kms were highway, and I have an Apexi Twin Chamber.

I dont normally let it run that low unless i have drive out to Mudgee etc, etc (all highway kms, then i get between 580-610kms)

I understand you can take the BOV off the car with no probs, but actaully dismantle the BOV?

I imagine to blank off they simply put a 2-3mm plate under the BOV flange. To unblank they simpoly remove the plate. They are not actaully tampering with the internals of the BOV. Or are they?

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
