Well done Russ and Mark, sub 1 min at Tsukuba is flying, especially being there for the first time..

Time attack event would be awesome, count me in.

And with the classes there should be a 'street class', where full trimmed road registered cars can compete, we have no chance against the likes of giant!!!!

old school JDM cars allowed or just modern stuff? tell me now before I sell my Datto, because an event like that would be great fun.

Edited by hrd-hr30

There definately would be a street car class, on street rubber(no semi's), this class is important, full interior & no cage, with a/c( if original equipment)

and i would like to see a hybrid class of jdm cars of any age, so all these datto's and corolla's, 240/260's can compete, all these would be in one class, i would think.

With Wakefield being resurfaced (I think it started yesterday?), would it be a viable track once the work is completed?

Also I think it would be really important to have some well thought out regulations in place. I think the problem would be that unless the competition is effectively broken down into competetive classes, and regulations are put in to govern to total performance of competitors (eg the no slicks at Tsukuba), it would be easy to end up with an unfair competition that is really biased towards some competitors.

I think there would be quite a lot of interest in such an event from people with street cars (ie not dedicated track bashers) as a good way of getting involved in some friendly competition with other similar cars, due to the fact that the format is relatively kind on cars (basically only as hard as a regular track day).

Perhaps it could be broken down into something like this:

Unlimited AWD, RWD, FWD

3 top classes dependant on drivetrain config. R-compound rubber allowed.

Street AWD, RWD, FWD

3 street classes dependant on drivetrain config. Street legal tyres only. Full interior, full exhaust, no cages, valid registration required.

(Which so far is obviously more or less how the Revspeed event is divided)

But then additionally have:

Unlimited and Street Classics

1979 perhaps? And older cars elegible. Otherwise same rules as other Unlimited and street class respectively.

True Street

Similar to street class, but also no engine conversions, functioning cat convertor required, the owner must drive the car and car must drive to the event.

This might obviously be a bit difficult to enforce, but I think would make for a really entertaining class?

The $1000 Challenge

Limited to spending $1000 on your entry (including purchase price of the car). Other than that pretty much anything goes, as long as the vehicle passes scrutineering.

This would be the perfect class for all the backyarders out there and people on a strict budget, perhaps the prize for the class being a drive in an Unlimited or Street class car in the following years event? Or maybe $1000 prizemoney? :(

Obviously this kind of class would benefit those who can think outside the square a little (not only in terms of what car to squeeze into the budget, but also showing what is most important in making a car go fast).

Again, this could prove to be a bit difficult to police, but if it could be done I think it would be fantastically different and completely brilliant fun for spectators and competitors.

Of course this is just throwing around ideas at this stage, but I think it would be great if while the event was similar to the Revspeed event, if it also had its own character...

sounds good. I don't care if my thing had to run in the open class against the modified AWDs, but if there's enough of us hybrid things to justify a class of their own that's all good too. If this is actually going to go ahead I might have to hang onto the Datto for a bit longer!

from experience though, be prepared for people to try and cheat the 'street tyres' rule. Particularly if there are prizes on offer. I've done an event where there was a class for semi slicks and a class for street tyres with prizes in each category. The top 2 places in the street tyre class were on Kuhmo V70A's and predictably enough took the 2 prizes on offer. They argued that since they are DOT (like all semi slicks) they are street tyres :(

Why don't you link the thread so everyone can see the discussion? You need to build a bridge.

Be warned Russ, if ppl don't like the rules and feel cheated by the result they may threaten legal action against you!!

the wheel alignment was the issue early on, caused by the way we had tied it down! :D 12mm of front toe out!!

luckily i had bought some smart string alignment gear with us to realign the car

So major congrats on the effort guys truly top work.

Was curious as to what sorta gear you used to realign it

"Smart string" meaning one of the laser type setups?

yep once some more discussions have been had

i will open a thread on this for ideas and opinions.

it will be at the head of every entry form, judges descision will be final.

and we would try to check car catergory on pre event check.

as fars as tyres go, we would probably have a list of tyres the are eligible for the street class to eliminate the confusion.

i hope this goes ahead, as i know a lot of people would love to get their car out in something they can get some recognition from and build a great event.

i really loved the twenty mintue sessions that they ran at Tsukuba, lets most cars compete because you dont have to kill it! almost no cars that competed there would have done 10 laps of QR!!

russ

Congratulations guys! The vids you posted were awesome :D They made me wish i could have a drive of a car like that...hehehe...will just have to keep dreaming :( . I can't believe Mark managed to catch it when it started to get out of shape...awesome driver!!!

Hey Russ again mate well done to you and all who help out with your efforts in Japan!

Seems you my have help out Steve return from the dark side and see the light. Tells me he has a list as long as his arm for my old shit box. Not sure if i should thank you or curse ya LOL

An Australian time attack event would be unreal Russ, and I'd be in for sure!

I personally would like to see the rules kept quite similar to the Tsukuba Rev Speed event, but any form of time attack, or laps for that matter, is a great thing in my book so long as I can run my car! :D

Troy: At least with the mega dollar GT-R's and EVO's that are sure to be there, we can still give each other a run :(

yes really like the Tsukuba format so it would be the basis.

hey chris, thats good as we were giving him plenty of shit!! :D

hey annie!! make sure you tell darren to fit that passenger seat or you'll be driving his car! i 've seen your driving to and your ascrazy as mark.

mate, I don't think this is the place for re-hashing that, but feel free to correct anything I said in the earlier post that was not 100% accurate and truthful. I only mentioned it because it seemed relevant as a heads-up for Giant to help prevent anything like that happening at his event/s.

I liked the rules - you could tell because I wasn't one of the blokes who broke them. And I deliberately didn't mention what event it was and didn't name any names or anything, but you still feel the need to jump in. Well, since you brought it up - did you not realise that you were buying semi slicks from the Kuhmo Motorsport distributor??? I can understand that - its an easy mistake to make... As long as you feel you won fair and square by not entering the class for semi slicks, that's all that matters Wilo.

And just for the sake of accuracy I was the one threatened with defamation action. I didn't threaten anything. I told him I'd take it to fair trading and I did. They couldn't proceed because he didn't provide a reciept or ABN, so I had no proof any transaction actually took place. that's all you'll get from me on that subject.

sorry to go off topic people.

if all goes ahead , you will be very welcome.

this will be for everyone that has this type of car!!

hopefully we can get it off the ground, a website name has been registered, which i wont disclose at the moment but if all goes well info will be available via that and updates and so fourth.

i would like the track to be a bit tight and technical so that it's not just about horsepower, so maybe resurfaced wakefield would be good! great place and facilities. the good thing about the format was you could come in whenever you needed over the 20 minute session to make changes, air pressures cool down etc and get back out and into it.

loved it

    • Welcome to SAU, what are you looking at buying?
    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA
    • The video for the servicing and fuel filter change can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLJ65pmQt44 One of the main jobs I wanted to do before the car officially went on the road, was to remove the awful looking blue silicone hoses. There's nothing wrong with having coloured silicone hoses, but I realise as I'm getting older I prefer monotone engine bays with a splash of colour on the engine cover(s). I cover this in a lot more detail in the Youtube video, so unfortunately there's limited photos of the process. The intercooler, upper radiator, boost vacuum and upper breather hoses were all changed to black silicone with mikalor clamps. The only blue left is a blanking cap at the back of the inlet manifold and the GReddy pulleys (which will be replaced for stock when the cambelt gets replaced) While the intercooler pipes were off I gave them a quick clean/polish too A before photo I do have a replacement air filter on its way. Fuse box covers were painted blue, they're now satin black Another job on the list while the bumper was off, is to add some mesh https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54737966256_99b28bfa30_c.jpg[/img] I was hoping to use some thin wire to secure it, but it seems I've misplaced it and the wire I had was too thick to twist easily. I ended up using cable ties for the time being https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54737131882_c2b7989dcc_c.jpg[/img] Was pleasant to see this https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54737131627_8b2aab13b3_c.jpg[/img] The last thing to do was to fix the front grill and re-mesh that to match but I ran out of time The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4FsF6tgizE&t=23s
