Yeah you can make it look like mine too if you wanted. I will have to get a pic of the whole finished product posted up here. I have it all back together and going now and it looks sweet as.

To get the finish i got i just used wet and dry sand paper and heap of elbow grease. I started out sanding it all down with some 180 grit papaer. I prob spent the most time on this grade because i had to get rid of alot of that white corrosion stuff on the surface and pitting. After i was happy with that grade i then went to 320 grit, then 600 grit, and finally topped it all off with a good sanding of 1000 grit.

After doing all this it still seemed a bit dull and you could see some scratches still in it. I then found some Metal Polish paste and rubbed it down good with that. while using the metal polish, there is alot of black crap that comes off the aluminum. You should see it all starting too look alot shinnier then buff off the residue with another clean rag. After doing this it looked more mirror like and most of the fine scratches were not visible anymore.

Oh by the way, it would be advisable to do it with some sort of power sander or something because my hands were buggered after that. I didn't have any power tools and it took me around 6hrs to do them both.

I am not sure tho how long the shine will last. I will just keep polishing every now and then and see how it goes. I will post some more pics soon.

nice, man ive done the exact same thing.

but i used an air compressor + tools. i didnt use sandpaper tho.

i used these little blue and red sanding pads. they dont look like sand paper. but they did an awesome job. but the problem was it would miss around nipples and stuff, so u did have to do some by hand anyways.

good job, its fun showing off your engine now hey

Yeah i love it. Its such an inprovement to the engine bay. I was thinking originally to just powder coat the covers but while i had them off i just started having a muck around sanding them a bit to see what it might look like. It looked fairly good so i did the whole thing. I will have to get a shot of my engine bay now. i have already repainted a few things metalic blue and now the rocker covers really start to bring out the bling.

top job.

i dont like the thought of spending 6hrs on it though :D

good job man, nothing beats elbow grease. but word to the wise= invest in an air compressor and a set of tools and fittings.

makes a world of difference

a cheap dremmel from super cheap.with a poilishing kit from bunnings.and the usual sandpaper.possibly a mouse sander to.just dont sit on one spot for to long with the rough grit paper.

a bench grinder with cutt and buff polishing wheels and the wax blocks to suit.to do the big areas.bit hard though if your polishing the covers on the engine.

put a wire wheel on a high speed drill, or better get a bench grinder with a wire wheel on it, it will leave everything extra shiny as it sort of "melts" it flat if you hold it on long enough. thats how we polish brass at work and has worked on most things ive tried around my car

looks good, just make sure you give in a polish everynow and then or it will go dull like before.

Also polsihed alloy doesnt like to get wet, so after a drive in the rain maybe wipe them down with a clean rag, or they tend to go dull aswell.

Good Stuff :worship:

I would recommend maybe just trying to polish a small area where you wont see, just to see what it does. I did the inner section that gets covered by the coil pack cover. When it looked good on there i decided to do the whole lot. I was going to do the cast intake section too but i think i might have to get some air tools first to make the job easyier and less time consuming.

I just used a general purpose metal cleaner for all metals. But i think that i will buy some aluminum cleaner and see how that goes. After i sanded my covers down they didn't really look that good. It was only after i hit them with some metal polish that they came up with such a great shine.

    • Ahhh, I need the whole head unit. I definitely needed to roll back through and review your setup, ha ha! Neat setup they have going on. I just need a full double din head unit. But I want good and responsive. I might have to review what the likes of pioneer have out these days.
    • Ok so after much research and talking with knowledgeable people I've got my turbo conversion done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.  Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd. But nothing drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic.  I'm sure there is may e 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Dose anyone here have any ideas?   Cheers guys
    • Sorry I haven't been following all the detail, so you may have tried this. Does it idle with the tiniest bit of throttle you can add? You've mentioned the IACV, does it have an AAC valve and have you adjusted it at all (ie, screw the idle adjust screw all the way in, then back it out a couple of turns until idle is stable)?
    • My bad, I unplugged the one underlined in red instead of yellow before. With the car started, after unplugging the IACV (the one underlined in yellow), it idled at around 400/500 for 3 seconds before stalling. Attempting to start the car without the IACV will not start the car.   It does stutter and sputter for around 5 seconds before dying. However, immediately after starting it, you can already hear some slight sputters from the exhaust.   It won't start with the AFM unplugged. If it is when the car has already started, it stalls in a few seconds.   Yesterday, I did take some logs using Nistune of 3 scenarios. Car idling till it stalls Car idling and unplugging the IACV Car idling and removing the AFM I also have some previous logs of when the Car is idling till it stalls and when driving and it cuts. I am not really knowledgeable enough to understand what to look for. After every test, car idles rougher and rougher, until I have to stop. It will be fine the day after.
    • There is no difference between a 17x8 and an 18x8. The total diameter of the tyre needs to remain +/- the same (so you don't mess up the gearing, speedo reading, and clearance when turning front wheels..... so you just need to use a lower profile tyre on th 18 than you do on the 17. /rocket surgery.
