Not really on talking terms with him. Also I think it would be a natural conflict of intrest, don't you think?:( .......

The last thing i want is thread to go in the wrong direction. All I want to know is if its remotely possible to do this.

Workshop for skyline owners by skyline owners. Simple as that...

Thats a shame that there is animosity between you two.

I don't think workshops would see this as a competitive threat. There is always going to be backyard mechanics out there, the workshops will forever be the ones who pick up the pieces when amateur modifications go wrong :)

Would you just limit it to skylines that can be worked on? What if someones daily driver breaks down and they would like to work on it in the shared workshop?

Of course it is remotely possible, whether or not it is economically viable is a different story.

What might be better, if people are all interested in restorations for skylines ect. then post up inviting people to join smaller networks of say 10 and apply the same idea. It may not be SAUWA affiliated but you will acheive the same goal.

Alot of skyline owners want to do this work to their cars, but generally lack the place, the tools or the right specialist equipment to do it.
This is true...but there is
Alot of skyline owners
and that is where real problem is.

Although I can see the reasoning for this type of approach, It would be nice to have member social gatherings where you could have members give advice and first hand experience.

But yeah... just a sugestion.

Well if we are on the page, a few guys run a business out of it. Its directly across from HD.

Its deff a business, they do wrxs and what not. Nic is the main guy there , ex mech from speedworks. I have been there twice, thats all I can say.

the workshop accross from hyperdrive is allstar garage yes now they are a business but before from what i know it was a hobby thing

organising this facility theres alot of key factors like insurance. insurance will be abit if its to cover 20 people, electrical bills, water bills. out of the 20 people one might use 30% of the power and i dont think all 19 will want to split it when one used 30 % of the power

you would also want to concerntrate on security aswell, alarms, bollards, braced doors etc etc

you also organising a hoist, tools, compresser, jacks, stands, maintence like hoist aswell down the track

do you trust the other 19 people

50 people in and out through a period through the workshop not everyone is going to be working on their cars them selves

scheduling for the workshop how bout if all 20 people are going to be entering motorvation, autosalon, race events and want to work on their cars to get the cars done for that event and all 20 want to use the hoist

i can keep going on and on about scenerios and situations but cbf

all i got to say is good luck :(

This wont happen, sorry to rain on your parade. How are you going to control the environment? How are you going to control payment of the rent roll? Prices of property and rents at the moment are ridiculous, i am a commercial agent so i know what you would be up for. You wouldnt find anything substantial with a common location etc for a cheap value.

You have a major problem with theft of parts, tools and time usage....

I cant see it happening, its nice to dream but there are way too many loose ends... I owned a workshop at that was a nightmare, trust is a BIG issue....

I have some land out in a rural area which i was considering subdividing for a race track, but legally its a noose around my neck, but i might be able to sort a hangar arrangement out with "REAL" trustworthy owners.

The only viable places are osborne park or welshpool and they fetch drug money prices at the moment. I leased 3000sqm on king edward rd and i got that at a steal for my family business @ $100sqm for warehouse and that was 1600sqm. You'd normally be paying upwards of $160minimum per annum plus outgoings of $25per sqm minimum, and a lease would definately be a minimum of 3 to 5 years with a market reveiw more than likely....

In theory, it aint possible...

The difference is that a commercial workshop needs to get a car out of the door as fast as possible, and with this there in lies the true difference between a commercial workshop and an membership one.

Best analgy I can think of is shannons car insurance and RAC.

How long would a vehicle be allowed to sit in the workshop? If the engine is out and is in pieces, the owner is hardly going to want to have to have it transported back and forth from the workshop to fit in with a roster. If they leave it in the workshop it is going to take up space, if one person is allowed to leave their car in pieces there then everyone else is going to expect to be able to do it.

What happens when a part of theirs goes missing? Even the closest of friendships fall apart when trust becomes an issue.

Anyways

could anyone who knows anyone who might be interested in an idea like this please get in contact with me.....i want to see what kind of numbers we could get together.....

if we cant get enough from skyline owners we may look at joining forces and getting numbers through perth-wrx

be looking at a member ship fee of about 20-50 a month

all tools and hoist access available

we would look at a website system for the roster of access into the bays

and have something like this

4 long term bays for project vehicles 8 medium bays (two weeks) 10 short stay bays....2 emergency bays

full camera security

lock up storage space

insurance

just some random ideas....

paul understands the issues of sharing and trusting others with junk lying around, time usages, and having people pay rent on time etc. It will be a major headache....

Personal property, and time usage, clutter will be an issue, expecially responsibility of tools if they go missing etc...

Who gets the tools and specialised equiptment when this all falls aparts?

This is a fantastic idea, but realistically, its not possible to do with all the hurdles in front of you. Should you prove me wrong and get this to succeed, ill drop by the workshop with a carton of congrats :)

LOL falls apart :)

What stich9 said makes alot of sense, alot easier to manage....

maybe a small bunch of people rather then going all out.... close mates etc...

But with all the posts so far there is alot to digest.

Its all good, be it negative or positive. Open discussion allows for all possibilities to be explored.

*Looks out back door @ double garage and double carport and says to self *thank F**** i got all the room i need to work on my cars *but mehhhhhh i am a lazy PR*** and find it easier to pay someone else to do the work lol

^^^^...I'm with you on that one mate...hehehe.

I recommend putting up a shed in backyard if you got enough space and buy your own tools. High initial costs but worth it in the long run........ONLY if you make use of it though...!!

or how bout use do what i did an become an apprentice mechanic somewher that ends up givin

you the keys to the place so you can use the workshop anytime you want haha

^^thats what i did but my boss is satan and doesnt let me use the workshop for personal use. hoists are cheap as now 3.5k for a new 2 post 4 tonne hoist. say 5k for a shed and wollah instant workshop in your backyard

you could always set it up as a business, charge for hourly or weekly - monthly... direct debits/credit card payments/cash only up front etc etc..

Contracts to sign for breakage etc you take the costs straight from bank etc.. or charge a deposit... it could work if thought out properly..

Its quite possible, but probably more viable for someone who already has the space and equipment...

The way i see it syslink67 is looking for real enthusiasts and imo anything is possible if theyre keen enough. However the main "title holders" would have to be few and serious contractural guidelines would need to be set for it to get off the ground. Not to mention deep pockets!

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
