Hi everyone,

I'm new to the site but i've always loved my Skylines, I bought an XR6 Turbo back in december because i wanted a Turbo car but i needed a 4 door for work (or so i thought).

Don't get me wrong i love my T but i'm strongly considering selling it and buying a 98-2000 R34 GT-T 5 speed.

Is there anything i should be looking out for or problems that may arrise when buying a skyline. For example i bought a 5 speed which is the worst box the XR T's come with but i didn't know at the time. I wanna try and avoid these things if possible this time.

Thanks in advance

Dillon

You can't go wrong with a late model R34 man.

the 5MT is one of the strongest you'll find on a road car.

Id say the only down side will be the stock turbo on the R34.

if you leae the car stock, it's all good.

but to make it lag free, nissan have used all lightweight shit like a type of plastic for the compressor wheel and ceramic for the exhaust wheel.

which is all good and gives the car a lag free driving experience.

how ever, increase the boost to around 12psi and they tend to let go soon enough.

apart from that, at those boost levels, the ECU runs in to rich/retard issues and you need an aftermarket computer or some sort of AFM signal bending piggy back like SAFC.

A hiflow, ecu, injectors and fuel pump and you'll be good for over 220rwkw before the AFM maxes out.

Z32 AFm and you'll be on your way over 250rwkw.

I'm sure the XR6T produces these numbers easily, but the R34 will be about 200kg lighter.

I'm sure you won't regret getting an R34 GTT

Yeah but the xr6 is making those figures at the flywheel, not the treads like you're talking about

The T's about 190rwkw stock. I wanna have the R34 at about 300rwkw enought to still torch most of my xr6 turbo mates. So what your saying is that the 5 speed box wont have any dramas with this power? I will get a heavy duty clutch and mabey flywheel so this will help too.

would be good if you could put that engine in the r34, even a 33.

you have a nice car man. i wouldnt change it, but you cant go wrong with a jap car

Yeah there a great car with so much potential for big power, but the gearbox is giving me the shits and it's about 6k to replace and i've always wanted a R34.

EDIT: Nothing wrong with RB engines, i use to have a VL :ermm:

lol probably 10 k to get 300rwk out of a r34 gtt. ecu, turbo, injectors, exhaust, fmic, bigger fuel pump. it never ends man.

dont forget brakes and suspension. you dont wanna end up smacking into something

Sh*t that much. Mabey this ain't such a good idea.

For the T i'd only need valve springs, bigger injectors, fuel pump, custom flash tune, demuf, 2nd cai and mabey a bigger cooler.

An r34 with gt-rs turbo, injectors, fuel pump, ecu, exhaust, cooler will make around 260rwkW, which is heaps and boost will be available early (about $5000 if you do the labour yourself). Don't forget all the change you'll have left over after selling the xrt  .

Just wanna throw an element of realism into the mix...

There are a few "laws" i guess you could call them, that come into play the more power you have...

A RWD car with heaps of power is more likely to just spin its wheels unless you have great tires and suspension setup.

Also, to get a lot of power with skylines you generally need a bigger turbo, and the bigger the power target, the bigger the turbo required....and the bigger the turbo, the more lag you have. This only pushes your usable power further up into the rev range and will make the car less responsive and not really the speed machine you're after.

There is a happy medium though, and you can have an extremely responsive and extremely fast skyline that is also reliable and relatively comfortable at the same time.

XR6T's are great cars, all things considered, but being heavy they're not _that_ quick when stock. They do have great potential though, just a pity about the trouble you're having with the manual box. I can say that Nissan gearboxes have a name for reliability and strength. Even the auto boxes will handle 240-260rwkw pretty nicely :w00t:

I'd recommend a R34 with minor mods to begin with, exhaust, safc (or other ecu/piggyback), boost controller. For an extra bit of oomph, a GCG hiflow (or other) turbo, fuel pump, nismo FPR/bigger injectors, upgraded AFM, bigger cooler, brakes (important at this stage), and 16psi or thereabouts and you'll have a very fast skyline.

One thing you'll notice is that the RB25 will rev a lot higher than the XR will and faster as well, not that you need me to tell you. The characteristics of either car are at opposite ends of the scale. The XR6T is a low-revving torque monster with a relatively small turbo for its size, whereas the skyline will rev its guts out and IMO feel more involving and excited...(ie. not saying its more exciting to drive, although it may well be...but the car will feel like it just wants to go...fast)

you'll notice my bias...but this is a skyline forum. I actually drive a stagea, which is about the same weight as your XR6 and with my current mods would probably give it a run for its money too. But being a wagon its not the ideal sports car you're looking for...and I dont intend to make it one :) thats what skylines are for :)

G'day mate,

i'd suggest keeping a close eye on the for sale section. Your bound to have a R34 come up forsale at some time already making 300wkw. Grab that, all the work is done and money has been spent. There are always quite a few high power cars forsale going cheap (for what they are).

There a number of big dollar R32 GTR bargains at the moment.

    • I'd be very surprised if you can buy new OEM mats. But if you can, I want some too!  Do you have links to the variations you found? Also, where are you located? I found that Nengun is happy to list items to purchase but when you do buy them you'll get an email that it's actually discontinued. As far as I know the variations in floor mats are different colour schemes as well as automatic and manual having a slightly different shape. The automatic ones fit into a manual car without issues, but I think you'd have trouble fitting the other way around. I have photos that show the shape difference if you care. FWIW I bought sets of used floor mats in decent condition at yahoo auctions.
    • Hi 🙋‍♂️. Just bought my Unicorn but the interior need some minor work so it would match my expectations ;). I noticed it is hard to get used oem floor mats in good condition so i started to dig if there's any chance to buy set of new ones. I found two websites - nengun and amayama and it looks like one can still buy factory new floor mats in Japan, but thers a small issue. Some mats (i assume genuine, oem ones) are marked as G4900 and these are "discontinued". The ones you can buy are marked as G4911 but i have no idea if these are also oem, made by other producer or some lower quality replacements that looks entirely different. Can anyone help? 😃  P.s. there is also some strange indication - 0V005, 0V015 and 0V505. Any idea what does it mean? Would appreciate any help with this 🙏
    • Hi, Marek here 🙋‍♂️. I finally fulfilled my longtime dream - recently bought Stagea and now waiting for it to arrive in Poland. There's only few of these in my country, and one of the owners  recommended mi this forum as a source of all the info i'd need since now i own one  so here i am.
    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
