I'll be purchasing an R33 Skyline GTSt manual in a few weeks and have a few questions for you guys. I've admired Skylines in general for some time and I finally have the chance to obtain one. Apologies if some have been answered before just ignore those ones  Your "what to look for when buying" info will be a great asset.

Do all R33s have HICAS 4 wheel steering ? Should I be using V power fuel instead of regular ? Can you guys recommend an oil type and power steering fluid type ?

I've heard various numbers thrown around concerning these cars and most of them are probably crap but here goes.. 0 - 400m in 14.5 seconds, 0 - 100km/h in 6 - 7 seconds and could use 9.8 Litres of fuel per 100km. I'm sure you'll get a laugh out of some of those..

Thanks for any help on these !

you could find all of this information by searching extensively, but it can sometimes be difficult so ill help you out a bit. i must recommend reading up on the "what to look for" sections, because these will greatly assist you in making a good choice.

i learnt the hard way. i bought from a dealership and the engine gave up inside 3 months, and the rear tyres DELAMINATED because they were 10 years old and on the car when it was imported... then around the 6 month mark i lost the clutch. then at the 9 month mark i lost the turbo and probably my 2nd engine. its been sitting in my driveway for the last 3 months because like most people i havent got $5000 ready to throw at a new engine/turbo.

BUT, skylines have a reputation for being bulletproof (mine being the obvious exception). so you can buy with some confidence. everything else in my car, brakes, suspension, transmission, is rock solid. and it drives beautifully for a 14yo.

i would advise to buy from a private seller in aus. dealerships are generally overpriced and their warranties arent worth the paper they are written on. km's are irrelevant and often woundback. judge the condition of the car by its appearance, esp interior. rebuilt engine would be a big bonus, and an aftermarket turbo, as the stock turbos often fail. also, look for GOOD modifications. injectors, coil packs, fuel/oil pumps, ecu, etc. which will probably save you money down the track.

all gts-ts will have hicas, although the value of this is questionable. a lot of people de-activate it. and yes you must use v power, or other 98+ octane fuel. not that shitty "premium" which is maybe 95 octane. i have heard in japan the pump fuel is 105 octane, but im not sure of the truth in that.

my understanding of a STOCK r33 gts-t is 0-400 in 14.2, 0-100 in 6.4? any slightly modified one will smash that. think 13.5, 5.8? or better! nice fat tyres work a treat.

unfortunately you will probably be disappointed by the fuel economy. i used more like 11-13L/100km depending on situation. its hard to resist opening it up...

gt-ahhh you must of bought the lemonist lemon out there in the skyline land...

Ive got a 96 GTST II and had it for over 1.5 years and the only problem I had since was replacing the bushes which cost me around 60 bucks for a pair... the original right one popped and spewed white goo all over the drive way.

Skyline = good cars, OK fuel eco. Need to care for them, esp with their age now and they will look after you.

youre not wrong! i forgot to mention the aircon stopped working after about a month, and the battery had to be replaced at about the 4-5 month mark!

those problems seem relatively insignificant when compared to 2 engines, a turbo, a clutch and $800 worth of tyres.

oh and some moron reversed into the damn thing and smashed the 400R front bar too... and buggered off without leaving a note! bloody $2700 good for nothing insurance!

seems like the worst decision i ever made. $16000 car ends up costing more like $30000. should have just bought a GT-R and been done with it...

Deposit for a house?

Deposit for a house?

haha not in sydney my friend. a skyline is but small change when compared to a house.

i justify the expense to my parents as a hobby. if i didnt spend it on my car id spend it on something else. that said, when everything has broken and been replaced i will own a very good car. but it will still only be worth $15k.

remember i am but 20, and have a good 5 years of parental bludging left to enjoy. and a sweet career starting next year. once i obtain a godzilla i will save for homesteads!

    • Am I correct in assuming that the R35's are getting the classic skyline haircut off the odometer?  Quick search on carsales, there are 33 08 and 09 GTR's for sale, only 2 of them have more then 100,000km's on them (116,075 and 110,000 respectively).  And somehow there are about 25 for sale with around 60,000kms? Looks like the classic skyline haircut to me =/
    • @Stringycheese  Have you only gone to the one blue slip workshop?  There will be a heap of them where ever you live, good odds that the next place you go to will pass the car.  Unfortunately (or fortunately?) every blue slip / engineering workshop will be different and will be happy passing or failing different things - despite working from the same set of rules. It's kinda like 2 lawyers arguing over a piece of legislation, each saying their interpretation is correct. Might seem strange that this happens when it comes to getting a modified car passed, but this is very much a thing. A big part of the game is finding an engineer / workshop that is on the same page as you.
    • Bah. I daily mine. ~60km per work day, 10-12 thousand km per year. What's the point of having a dirty old Datto and leaving it in the shed. It needs to be driven and enjoyed while the govco allows us to do so. It will only be a few years before we're forbidden to even start up internal combustion engines.
    • Judging by that spring perch and the normal looking spring on it - not a coilover. Well.... it is a coilover, just a stock format coilover, rather than what everyone calls a coilover.
    • Yes it is. We get stock from Nismo directly. I'm happy to take photos/video of it as proof before I ship it with timestamps or whathaveyou.
