Cost: $25 for driver or passenger

Time:

Gates open at 8.00am

Scrutineering commences at 8.15am.

A compulsory Driver’s Briefing is held at 9.30am

Activities on the Track commence at 10.00am

Info:

Speed Restriction – all drivers will be limited to 80% of the potential of both the car and driver.

This is not a race . There will be large differences between the speed of each vehicle so be careful. Anyone exceeding the 80% rule or overdriving will be flagged off the track and warned. A second offence will mean that it is home-time for you.

Scrutineering - All cars must have a safety check and receive an ‘OK’ sticker before going onto the circuit for the first time. Vehicles must be roadworthy or race worthy.

Brake lights must work.

Clothing – must be non-flammable cotton or, preferably, wool – no nylon – covering wrist to neck to ankles. Proper enclosed footwear – non flammable. No thongs or sandals.

All participants must wear a helmet which complies with current Australian Standard.

Noise – All vehicles must have an effective muffler fitted to the vehicles exhaust system in a manner which will reduce the engine noise. Maximum noise level permitted is 95dBA

Sessions - activities will be conducted in session of 30 minutes Driver only, followed by 30 minute session for driver and passenger. Sessions maybe shorter than 30 minutes, depending on track problems with cars etc.

Seatbelts must be worn at all times. Done up tightly.

Other cars - Be careful of other cars, watch out for them and give clear hand signals if you are going to slow down. Pull off and brake early when safe to do so. Do not brake suddenly when cars are following close behind. If you need to slow down, give hand signal and pull out of the way of others.

Age Restrictions - An opportunity for people over 16 years old to drive around the circuit under controlled conditions. Children must be at least 14 years old to be passengers. It is not a day for young people to learn to drive a car.

dont worry about the noise level.

my r31 is at 130db @ 4000rpm and they haven't kicked me off yet.

and with the 80% rule thier is userly a few cars (apx 30 or so) on the track at one time so you cant go 100% as

you might have some slow person in front of you.

go do it tho for $25 + fuel (me $140 for the day) it's worth it

Yeah the 90 odd db rule would screw me over too.

So my speedo goes up to 180 and I havent had the stock ecu changed so its pretty much capped around there, so 80% of that is about 144. So basically couldnt go above 150 on the track at all.

That will make bugger all difference if I have a GTR thats got an aftermarket ecu up my ass, as their 80% will be alot more than mine. :)

Either way, I know that their thinking is mainly for safety, but they should focus more on safe overtaking. Considering the power difference there could potentially be with the cars, it could be safer if some of the slower cars were travelling faster than their 80% and the higher powered cars were travelling less than 80%. Ah well.

The 80% ruling is based on each individual drivers skill. Not speed, not how much power your car makes and its not the same standard for every driver.

They do this as a safety precution - it also happens at proper track days during passenger laps.

If a driver is seen to be 'overdriving', ie constantly off the track and in the dirt, or struggling to keep the car straight, etc etc, they may considering you are driving above your abilty, and as that can be a concern, expeically at these days where there are often passengers in cars, they may ask you to leave.

They say "80%" as a way of telling people that this is not a sprint event (hence the title "Fun Day") and that they wont tolerate people pushing themselves past their limits on the track at these days.

Having said all that - these days are a great way to have a go on a track if you havent done so before. Its sometimes a little scary due to number of cars on the track at once, but again, if you are only driving at 80% there is little that can go wrong.

Anyways.... the above is my interpretation and if anyone wants/needs further info, I suggest you contact Winton and have a chat to the event organiser about it.

Thanks for the feedback, its something ive been wanting to do for a while. I cant do it this time round but I am interested in the future.

More that I want to learn to control my car better. When it kicks out I can correct it in some occurances, but I want to get better at that and the public streets arent the place to practice. A track day would be ideal to practice control in some faster situations.

I understand what you mean now by the whole 80% being the drivers ability rather than the cars ability. Im sure many SAU members would drive my car 10 times better than I can. :nyaanyaa:

The noise restrictions are measured at 30 metres at a registered point and must be under 95db

The Fun Day is designed for those who have road cars that have never been on the track before to go out and see if they like it without spending big bucks and buying a licence. We have special permission to run the day without licences but that means that cars must only travel at 80% of their capabilities.

Anyone wanting to go fast and get timed, there are 4 Tampered Motorsport Track Days next year, and 5 Round of the Winton Sprint Series which you can go too and have your car timed electronically.

The Fun Day is the very very entry level into motorsport.

Cheers

Adam

hmmm sounds good, I was just worried about the 95db thing. But by the sounds of it it should be ok. My car cant be that loud as i drive it on the street everyday and have never had any problems but i reckon it would prob be over at an epa noise test

winton fun days are just show up, pay and get scruteneered and away ya go.

They getting pretty busy though so you really need to watch your mirrors and be carefull of dickheads that have no idea.

as for the noise, trust me. DONT WORRY. there have been a number of days i went to a around 18 months ago that ex v8 supercars (ea falcon) have been out testing along with hq race cars, open wheeler formula fords and a gt3 (once)! trust me, no skyline is as loud as them.

if you havent been to a track day i highly reccomend it, unbelieveable fun the first time you head out and think...... holy crap...... im on a race track!

if you are planning on having a bit of a dip make sure your brake pads are healthy. also reccomended that you give car a service afterwards if going hard.

fuel is available at the track but is expensive, 100 octane is on pump too!

hope the info is helpfull

enjoy

brett!

this wasy first track day, and i had soo much fun. was a great day

i would love to see pics of my car on the track or even a video as i saw a few video camera's around wen i went past the standing area. i was driving the white r32 gtr.

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
