No, no mucking around, although to get it licensed the rego boys are going to want to see that you have updated to all the V8 gear - springs, brakes (all the brakes from master cyl to discs and callipers) diff, and....erm....thats about all I can think of. Remember that the XD did actually come with the 351 as optional (it wasn't deleted from the option list until mid XE)

The thing you have to ask yourself is, is it really worth it? The old XD-XF falcons really aren't worth a pinch of shit anymore, and its not worth pouring all your heart and soul into one unless you are looking at keeping it forever. And trust me, even with a V8 in it, unless you are drag racing it, it WILL be a dissapointment after a 200SX. Don't get me wrong, if you cut me I bleed blue ovals, but they are just a old falcon now, and they will never increase in value like the older ones did (unless it is an original ESP and you really don't want to upset the originality of one of those, and most of them had V8's in the already)

hey there,

me uncles gotta a XD falcon 6cyl the car is quite clean for its age and he wants to sell it to me and i wondering if a 351 would fit into it or is there some kinda mucking around

cheers

brakes are the same across the i6 v8 range with xd/e/f series front struts and springs are different (will need the v8 ones )

rear leafs are different rating as well you can get them reset at any decent spring works but most vehicle examination places wouldnt be able to tell the difference in rear springs

diff centre also different 8 3/4 lsd are relatively cheap from a wreckers

but your best option would be upgrading rear end to disk brake either 9 in lsd or an 8 3/4 lsd

i looked into doing this many years ago and was told that brakes and suspension was the same for 6 or 8

But this isnt the place to be asking, there are plenty of ford forums with more accurate information.

yeah as has been said putting a 351 into a xd is rather easy. if it was an xf then you would be in for a bit of a shit fight. i would also agree with going for the fuel injected v8 out of a later model. rather cheap to buy and much nicer motor, or a turbo motor from an xf or even a just 4.0L 6 out of a later model falcon. as for performance, it would go ok because even though they are a massive car they are rather light (somewhere round 1300kg, depending on options). so with a decent motor they can get up and boogey. but that said it won't corner like a skyline. it will still handle like a xd falcon.

yeah buy a windsor, i build a few clevos but they are tight in the bay.... fit this to the windsor while your at it.

    • This coupled with 6-9 speed autos with ridiculously short gearing is why these modern shitbox cars always seem so fast off the line. If it wasn't for those things, Raptors would not seem fast. The problem we have is there is a driveability gap between a more gentle take off and a wheelspinning sideways launch. The difference between ankle flex required to achieve one and ankle flex required to achieve the other is about 0.5°.
    • Yeah I think I'm also with the opposite here. It's 'hard to keep up with traffic' because in the real world I'm accelerating with 15% throttle and they are pinning it. It feels like I'm being an overt dickhead at anything above 15% throttle, so the car sounds like I'm being an overt dickhead to keep up with/get ahead of traffic when I'm really just trying to drive with traffic. There would be no issue 'keeping up with traffic' if we used the same level of throttle input/aggression to drive around. People really do just drive around with their foot nearly pinned in econoboxes.
    • To be fair it's the other way around. 300kw is boring in a modern Golf or BMW. They are so competent / well-engineered / devoid of emotion that you have to go stupid fast to feel anything. Whereas the <300kw RB still makes all the right noises and it feels good to drive. Can pull off at the lights with the turbo whooshing and the blow-off pssshing and feel like the coolest kid on the block. Just don't look to the side where you'll see the bored housewifes in their shitbox Yaris/Corolla/Camry that kept up because you didn't go fast at all
    • 300kW is so boring in a Skyline, you'll get spanked by someone's mum's Golf with Alibaba pipes, and an email tune.
    • Wow! how times change 2017 $15k seems expensive... now $30-$50k is the price.
