Hey guys, just about to buy a r32 and just wondering how much power you can get out of the rb20 for around 5g's. Most of my mates reckon i should look for one with a rb25 in it or just go with the r33. Need help :/

they come with RB25's but only non turbo.

for 5G's I'd be reinforcing the engine, putting a 2530 or equivalent and making it flow freely (intake, exhaust mods), a decent tuning solution (powerFC, or some piggy back) to control boost and fuel maps. Its a bit of a stretch, but doable.

That way you can concentrate on a good solid, reliable engine that you can make sing day after day, and leave the guys who drop RB25's into their R32's to chase the high numbers on a stock engine, which will eventually die from being pushed too hard.

he means buy an R32 GTST that has already had an RB25 conversion.

I've seen one in QLD for $13K

here you go..

R32 with RB25

Might be an SAU member.

anyway.

the only RB25 any R32 got from factory was a non turbo RB25DE.

The fact is this.

Bang for Buck, R33 GTST has it over the R32.

it has the RB25.

it has the better gearbox.

it has slightly larger brakes.

However, the looks is not to everyones liking.

For $13K, you could get a stockish series 2.

for $15K, there are plenty of Series 2 R33's around.

R32 prices are all over the place (search for the word DREAMERS and you find a really good thread)

to answer your question of $5K on an RB20.

Assuming the R32 GTST you buy has the usual FMIC, Exhaust and pod (like all of them) you will need.

Turbo

injectors

pump

boost control

coils (maybe)

clutch

tuning

I'd suggest that 240rwkw could be had with $5K on an RB20.

I'm sure others are already thinking it and so should you.

You need supporting mods to use this power.

tyres

suspension

brake pads.

not to mention that you'd want to make sure the engine is healthy before you do these mods so...

oils (engine, diff, box)

fluids (clutch, brakes, radiator)

belts

plugs

compression test

but as a simple $5K for how many kw, I'd suggest about 240rwkw

GTST is pretty much on the money but as he said you can bet your money on having to spend on other things.

If it was that easy, everyone would be driving around with 240+ which is certainly not the case :(

Also depends how much of the work you are doing youself as well. I might be wrong but from figures in my head that would push it over 5k..

but am i wasting my money by doing all these mods to the rb20, because later on i want to make much more power out of it

Depends how much power...

You'll find a few threads on this too. I believe there is a high powered rb20 thread around somewhere. Also, have a look at the RB20 + mods thread. You'll get a good idea as to whats needed for what figure..

Well if thats the case you may as well get started now on an RB25 and not waste your time on an RB20

As much as i LOVE RB20's 240-260rwkw is really pushing the safe boundries of a stock motor and above that will require you to build the motor but it will never have the torque an RB25 will give you.

Personally i'd stick with the RB20 :( but thats just me

yes.

some people say "do it right the first time.."

I says Do what you can now and then sell and do something else later..

How much power is "much more power later"?

For $5K, you're going to have one of the following.

the 240rwkw RB20 I said above.

Stock RB25DET.

Possibly Stock RB26 from an 89 model GTR

Possibly a choked RB30/25det

The fact is that one mans trash is anothe mans treasure.

you spend $5K on your RB20 now.

save more money.

get bored.

Start an RB30/25 det build in the background or even rebuild an RB26 to factory specs (I think one guy did it here for $6K) and once done, you can sell your RB20det parts and engine off for a few $K

sell it all seperate.

someone is always looking for something.

turbo, coil packs, injectors, turbo, manifold, head, bottom head, oil pump etc etc.

then, you have your MUCH MORE POWER, and have sold your 240rwkw rb20det off to reclaim some money back.

I don't know about you, but I don't have the $12K to do a forged rebuild of any engine along with new turbo's and pumps etc that so many people on here seem to be doing.

Spend the $5K on the RB20.

then sell it off later.

this is ofcourse if you already have this RB20det powered car.

If you are still looking at buying a car, I'd consider looking at buying one with a bigger engine already in it.

here is one for you to consider..

hmm..

Looks like it might be sold..

RB30/25 r32 $10K

It would have cost you ALOT less than $5K to fix that issue it had.

This is the 2nd RB30/25 R32 GTST in Brisbane that was for sale under $15K

the other one sold for $12K

When you consider the fact that R32 GTST owners are asking for between $10K - $13K on average for a stockish R32 GTST, you would be wise to try and find one with a conversion already done.

For $5K, you're going to have one of the following.

the 240rwkw RB20 I said above.

Stock RB25DET.

Possibly Stock RB26 from an 89 model GTR

Possibly a choked RB30/25det

Exactly the way I look at it.

I'd rather 240rwkw than:

Standard RB25 or an average 26 that may need a rebuild and will need a new gearbox bolted up. Especially if you have proved to yourself that the RB20 you have has been reliable enough to start modifying.

People claim all sorts of shit when trying to sell motors... just rebuilt etc etc, only 100,000kms etc but then, why are they selling them? Of course, there may be some cases where receipts are shown and there is a genuine reason proof but you will find most of these will be out of the budget.

At the end of the day, I would love to havea 25 in mine but its just not financially viable for me to do it. I would much rather spend $5k on my existing motor that I've owned for a year and never had any drama (fuel pump & touch wood :() than risk buying something out of car you don't see running that may have some internal problem you would never know until you have spent the money on having someone install and hook it up..

Obviously some people could share some good experiences they've had, but you never know what you're gonna get and its always best to prepare for the worst.

If the car is stock, 1st thing is get an exhaust system / high flow cat to free up the flow, airpod then an intercooler, then turbo up grade.

Or you can get a boost controller but just watch out how much boost you gonna run, if a lot u might wanna upgrade internals but that we talking big $$$

If ya cars already got exhaust / pod / intercooler then do the turbo then do the ECU then ya might wanna upgrade the clutch and put a lightweight flywheel in aswell (should come with the clutch kit).

    • Pay careful attention to the kinematics of that upper arm. The bloody things don't work properly even on a normal stock height R32. Nissan really screwed the pooch on that one. The fixes have included changing the hole locations on the bracket to change the angle of the inner pivot (which was fairly successful but usually makes it impossible to install or remove the arm without unbolting the bracket from the tower, which sucks) and various swivelling upper arm designs. ALL the swivelling upper arm designs that look like a capital I (with serifs) suck. All of them. Some of them are in fact terribly unsafe. Even the best one of them (the old UAS design) shat itself in short order on my car. The only upper arm that works as advertised and is pretty safe is the GKTech one. But it is high maintenance on a street car. I'm guessing that a 600HP car as (stupidly, IMO) low as you are going is not going to be a regular driver. So the maintenance issues on suspension parts are probably not going to be a problem. But you really must make sure that however your fairly drastically modded suspension ends up, that the upper arms swing through an arc that wants to keep the inner and outer bolts parallel. If the outer end travels through an arc that makes that end's bolt want to skew away from parallel with the inner bolt, you will build up enormous binding and compressing forces in the bushes, chew them out and hate life. The suspension compliance can actually be dominated by the bush binding, not the spring rate! It may be the case that even something like the GKTech arm won't work if your suspension kinematics become too weird, courtesy of all the cut and shut going on. Although you at least say there's no binding now, so maybe you're OK. Seeing as you're in the build phase, you could consider using R33/4 type upper arms (either that actual arm, OEM or aftermarket) or any similar wishbone designed to suit your available space, so alleviate the silliness of the R32 design. Then you can locate your inner pivots to provide the correct kinematics (camber gain on compression, etc).
    • The frontend wouldn't go low enough because the coilover was max low and the upper control arm would collapse into itself and potentially bottom out in the strut tower. I made a brace and cut off the kingpin and then moved the upright down 1.25" and welded. i still have to finish but this gives an idea. Now I can have a normal 3.25" of shock travel and things aren't binding. I'm also dropping the lower arm and tie rod 1.25".
    • Motor and body mockup. Wheel fitment and ride height not set. Last pic shows front ride height after modifying the front uprights to make a 1.25" drop spindle.
    • Here's Logans Silvia with R32 Drivetrain, mine will be slightly lower (more angle). He was constantly blowing the RH axles at around 16deg. I want to avoid this.
