Hey guys

Big problem, drove to work today and all was fine, parked up and my car started puffing out tons of blue/white smoke, there was literally clouds of it pouring out my exhaust, the car has never smoked once since i have owned it and it is still running perfect, went to see my mechanic/engineer and see what he thought it could be, he said problally turbo, so went home and took off the exhaust dump and intake pipes, both sides are dry as, there is only a tiny bit of oil in the dump pipe, went back to my mechanic and showed him the dump pipe, he was a bit shocked to be honest, he thought it was very weird that it would all of a sudden start smoking, he suggested it could be ringlands or valve stem seals.

I will be getting a compression and leakdown test done tommorow hopefully, hopefully this will atleast give me an idea of what is happening :D

Any suggestions/thoughts on what it could be, i just blew most of my money on a hks 3037 turbo kit so am now stuck in a bit of a corner lol, any help would be great.

Cheers

I know that this sounds a bit rough, but if the turbo is fine, then there is nothing you can do if the ringlands are gone.

Rebuild time, and be prepared to spend over $5k.

The thing that i find weird is if it is the rings, how did they let go? the car still runs perfect and has run perfect ever since ive owned it, gets regular 4000kms oil and filter changes, hardly gets thrashed, i never hit the rev limiter the car has only done 87xxxkms etc etc, i just dont see how all of a sudden a ring/ringland can let go, my mechanic was also very suprised about it, he said it is very weird.

mine still runs fine and i have similar problems.. loads of smoke from rear turbo and on backing off smoke out of pod rear filter.

first suspected turbo but now after compression and leak down test my number 6 cylinder isnt looking hot

with 0 compression and alot of leak...

:D

you could very well be in the same boat as me.

but i am happy about rebuild time! atleast now i will know whats done to my motor instead of guessing

I would be happy about doing a rebuild , if i had the funds lol, but i just blew most of my money on the turbo kit , was going to go for around 280rwkw on stock internals, but i guess thats not going to happen now, seems like im cursed at the moment lol.

At the moment i am runing the stock turbo, but i have a HKS 3037 Pro S turbo kit ( theres is tons of pics in my car link) sitting in my room waiting to go on my car, looks like it will be sitting in my room for a little while longern now.

how do u know the stock turbo hasent gone to the gods? is it still making boost?

Yup still making plenty of boost, there is no oil in the intake pipe and the compressor wheel and exhaust wheels are dry as a bone, turbo has hardly any shaft play either.

Just checked all the spark plugs, every spark plug is nice and clean, none of them are covered in oil, the tops of the pistons are all nice and clean from what i can see (there is a little bit of black soot ofcourse but not much)

Check and clean your PCV valve and make sure thats working.

Had a similar problem with mine ages ago and thats what it was

The PCV valve has been removed, all the stock beather setup has been blocked up and i just have the 2 beather pipes venting into a catch can which vents via a beather filter

Still sounds like oil seal in the turbo. My 20 turbo did the seals. You couldn't see the oil in the housing though. I threw on a 25 and the problem went away. The old turbo still boosted fine and had no shaft movement either. Do a compression test too.

Took the car into nissan today for them to have a look, straight away they said probally the turbo, they told me to take it off and check if the oil drain was blocked at all, went home after work and got started on taking the intake piping off, straight away i noticed that the piping from the turbo to intercooler were covered in oil, took off the intake pipe and there was oil sitting on the bottom of the compressor inlet, i didnt really check that properly yesterday as i just removed the pod and had a look, so that pretty much confirms it in my mind the the turbo has shat a seal.

Have just removed the turbo and have found another problem thanks to the previous owners not running antifreeze, one of my frost/welsh plugs in the block have started to rust pretty bad and now has a pin hole leak in it, looks like im going to have to replace those before bolting on my 3037 and getting it tuned.

  • 2 weeks later...

yeah front seal let go on the old turbo.

which is why if the smoke symptoms happen, the first thing you do is pull off the cooler pipes to look for oil pooling, in some case the intercooler gets a decent coating of oil in it also.

good to hear the new turbo is on... should be an animal

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
