Ok guys, I know this has been asked one billion times before but I'm gonna ask again cos this time for me it's a bit different...

I'm looking at a car in Perth, it HAS been complied however is not registered nor has it ever been in Australia. If I buy it and get it down here, will I only need to go for a vehicle inspection down at a police station for them to allow me to register it (obviously I'll need to get temporary rego to drive it down there) or do I need to pass it over the pits again? I rang Regency just then and they said that as long as it has it's compliance plates it will only need a police check but that seems too easy to me.

Also, if I do go down this path, I need to get my hands on a standard GTR bonnet (in white preferably) as it has a carbon fiber one on it that I don't think the police would take too kindly to. Anyone able to help out there?

Ah so it won't be a full over the pits inspection then? Like I said, the only MAJOR stand out thing is the bonnet and possibly the ride height, however the aftermarket suspension IS height adjustable. AFAIK, 18' rims are allowable on a GTR correct?

yeah 18's are allowed.

If the car has compliance they should only check the

Engine NO

Vin NO

Build date

window tinting (they will make you peel it off if its to dark)

exhaust (rarely)

it a quick and easy check just to make sure the car or the engine isn't stolen

Yeah what whiplash said is correct.

Had mine in the sturt shed about a week ago for the same deal.

As long as there's no stand outs like dark tint, wheels sticking out of guards or guards sitting on tyres, you should be fine.....if it's loud don't rev it, just idle it into the shed.

Do what I did.....wait for 40 degree day and show up 15 minutes before knock off......Sturt shed is open till 3.00pm Wed & Thur with no appointment needed.

Wow, this is good news. So after I take it to the police, I assume they give me some paperwork that I take to motor reg that allows me to register the vehicle here in SA? Correct?

do you have any pics of the car your looking at??

The pillar guage and boost controller(??) will raise their interest straight away, you'll want to be rid of them for the inspection. I would think see if you can get a stock seat and bonnet. With those things changed over HOPEFULLY they wont send you for full inspection.

Obviously I'd change over the bonnet, EBC and pillar gauge to standard, hence why I asked here if anyone had a standard bonnet, suspension is also height adjustable so that isn't an issue. Also not a fan of the front bar either but that's easy enough to source another. Just everything else about the car I love and I really would like to get my hands on it. Just wish I could get a straight answer from Regency about it. They said it SHOULD be ok just a visual ID, but can't guarantee it. Idiots

    • On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.
    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
    • Nice....looking forward to that update
    • Neg, the top one is actually for the front. The sizes are 18x10.5 +18 and 18x11 +32.   I measured many times but I'm sure I'll have problems as this is the thread for problems.
