Hi guys,

just a really quick question, had a pretty decent search IMHO and looked at the list of "General Maintenece" topics, but failed to find anything on the fuel filter.

Now i am no newbie to basic mechanics, but the R33 fuel filter stumped me.

The problem i am having is getting the hoses off the stock filter. I have popped it out of the bracket and undone the screw clamp thing, but im buggered if i can get the line off! And seeing as i cant get the line off the top of the filter im pretty sure the bottom one is going to be harder lol.

My option was replacing the lines, and hacking them off with a knife, but i dont really need to do i? So is there somthing i can do? Anyone had this trouble and overcome it?

Hey Mate

Yeah i had the same problem. There is a set of hose removal pliers that you can buy that are used to get the hoses off. Think they sell them at autobarn etc. But if your tight ass like me :D you can prob use some pliers or something and try and twist the hose off. I think i got a small screw driver in there and tried to free the hose up a bit. Maybe try pouring some boiling water over the hose for a while to expand it a bit.

I would recomend that you get the hose pliers. Will make life easier.

Note: using normal pliers might butcher the hose a bit. :D

Sweet i might try the boiling water approach, or, i could just be a semi tight ass and get new lines.

Little more likely than might but then how old are the hoses anyway? Could be worth getting a new line, they aren't expensive.

Exactly what i was thinking, its a 1998 that just clicked over 50,000km. I figure anythning thats 10 years old being forced to do something it doesnt want to will break... ha

I remembe life before hose pliers....I used to use a lot more skin. Especially with all those bloody hard , 15yo air and coolant lines on the gtr

first put on gloves. when it lets go at last your hand is going to smack into something, hard.

take of the hose clamp (obviously) and move it right off the pipe.

2 steps - first break the seal of the hose to the pipe then remove it.

1/ use pliers, nice wide head, be carfeul not to rip up hose too much. You want to turn the hose say 90 o until the seal breaks (not trying to pull it off). you will feel when it lets go.

2/ then pull the hose off, maybe using the same pliers, maybe use a big headed screwdriver to push the hose off. anyway, once the seal is broken its a lot easier to get off, its been stuck right there for 10 years with a tight hose clamp on it.

Thanks dude, i figured itd have some sort of hose seal on it too, but iv never had this much trouble trying to break the seal! I think its because the bracket is a pop-in and pop-out type, making it difficult to keep the filter still.

Sometimes that old ITR was a dream.. nice big banjo bolts rather than hoses :)

when i had to change mine it wouldn't budge so and when trying hand slipped and as Duncan said it hit something hard and i still have a bruise 3 months on so gloves are the way to go although you can't really grip it right with them on.

try the warm water option, if that doesn't work you can just cut of the hoses at the ends of the filter if you have enough slack on them and just put them onto the new filter but make sure you still have heaps of slack left or you could just replace the line.

get hose pliers as they help alot and save you hacking at the lines and will come in handy in the future and i also have rags lined around the area as there will be spillage of fuel no matter how careful you are.

don't forgot to remove fuel cap as well to get pressure out of the system or be ready with all those rags and check for any leaks or kinks in the line as well when your done.

good point re the fuel pressure - there is meant to be a vent in the fuel cap but mine is well and truely blocked.....last time I took the lines off it pumped literally litres of fuel out. Opening the fuel filler will stop this - you can tell if your vent is blocked because there will be a whoosh of air escaping anytime you open your fuel lid

Got it all done.

In the end i cut the lines off as they werent budging.

It was hard enough getting the new lines on the new filter (and off again for test purposes) so i think i chose wisely :)
