Im going to buy some adjustable cam gears for me GTR and was wondering why i would pay $500 for tomei cam geasr when i could buy JJR cam gears for around $249 the pair???

Whats the differance between the two etc etc???

i am using a pair i got off ebay (not the jjr ones) and found that when they heat up that it is very hard to adjust them as the inner alloy must expand slightly cause them to jam. Made it hard to adjust them when on the dyno.

OK this may not be an issue with JJR ones (ive never used them) BUT with various aftermarket cam gears i have used over the past year or so i have found MOST are not true to the timing marks.. ie zero is far from being actual zero... in once instance the gears were close to 10 degrees off.... This is a real pain especially if you have a recipe that works and pre set them.... this engine with the real bad gears lost 15rwkw str8 away up top and quite a bit more through the mid, we had to diagnose the problem on a dyno and re set them to get the most from the combo and the money saved from the cheap gears was less than the extra dyno time to find the new optimal gear settings.

Best bet is to buy them and expect the worst, and time the engine to make 100% sure your cam timing is where you want it... For me this now means i charge more to install no-name gears as i have to determine accuracy before it leaves the garage.

yes plz pm me... but by the sounds of it i should save the extra cash and by decent ones... that saying have you ever had trouble with brand name ones???

Is it worth getting them now, with the standered cams and computer?

Just get the factory ones modified.

Cheaper again, and perfectly fine. Plenty of people have done it and then you get no issues with wear, no timing issues and KNOW they will be right.

Yer X2 now we know what are S**T quality whats the BEST

The HKS early pulleys were not sufficiently hardened, teeth wear was obvious after as little as 5,000 k's. So simply going on brand name alone is not always a good idea. We use Jun, never had a problem, so I haven't bothered to change.

Cheers

Gary

What are JUN GTR ones roughly worth?

GREDDY

TOMEI

new HKS are all fine.

the jun ones are pretty cheap too rrp 16000 yen (RRP $175ea) but can be got easily for alot less.

    • There's restrictor pills in the stock boost control hoses. That's how they set the amount that was bled off and hence the "high" boost setting. The usual mod in the day was to remove it and send the "high" boost setting up to about 14 psi.
    • Thanks Duncan, that's the best info I've read. Furthermore after learning about the PCM programming side controlling the factory boost solenoid, the purpose of the solenoid is to "bleed" boost when pin 25 is earthed, thus allowing spring pressure in the wastegate actuator to overcome diaphragm boost pressure, thus closing or reducing the position of the wastegate flap creating more boost as the turbo is able to spin faster. It's pretty cool to see a designated Pill to do exactly this, would have liked to have seen it with a tiny filter over the end for those moments in vacuum.  The constant bleed pill has now been removed completely from the system and solenoid boost control has been restored once again.   Case closed 😂
    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
