Was driving towards Brunswick St (Melbourne) last night (Saturday) and saw booze bus doing its own thing... Im driving in my Skyline.

As I am driving up towards police, they let about 4-5 cars go infront of me and when they spot my car, they tell me to drive in to get breathalized. I didnt drink at all, it was around 9pm. I had my fog/driving lights on as it was still fairly bright and I could see well on the road. As I drive past one cop he tells me to put my lights on... no biggie, I turn the foggies off and chuck the headlights on. As I pull over, the second cop breathalizes me and I think the cop who told me to turn my headlights on, runs up to my bonnet and asks me to pop it open.

I have a stock standard car, used to have a pod and BOV over a year ago which I took off and also had a turbo back zorst which I also sold. As soon as the cop pops my bonnet he's like "Wow, a novelty...stock standard!" Im like "yeah the car is fully stock". He then walked off.

This is wierd cos I have owned my car for just under two years and this is my first "inspection for mods" incident.

Thought Id share... Id hate to be one of you guys who have sh|t loads of mods! Any stories?

Your just lucky he didnt fine you for having the driving lights on...As far as I am aware they are only to be used in Fog conditions

I drive around with mine on all the time (at night) and have never had problems with the police. They arent really foglights but driving lights. They take the same H1 wattage bulbs as your low beams so its no different then having 4 low beams on. As far as im concerned its my choice wether i want more light on the road, not up to police. Obviously if they are proper foglights or high beams or something then yeah thats understandable because it blinds traffic.

I used to drive around with mine on too.One day the copper let me off for having them on.I never knew it was an offence to have them on in normal night conditions..But according to him they were...Can anybody clarify if it is indeed an offence to have them on at night ? Copper may have been bullshitting me

Yesh the R33 "fog lights" are more like driving lights, they dont blind people unlike SSs and XRs.

I use Philips Crystal Vision globes in my low beams and my foglights. They are a nice white light and are still usable for driving around town (aren't dull like some of the globes like the Philips diamond visions). Having said that my friends HID's kind of make mine look yellowish. They are probably the closest that you will get to the HID look without forking out the extra money for HID's in your foglights aswell which would get costly

modena a big thumbs up on the stock ride!! will certainly help you whereever you go... just out of curiousity how coem uve kept it stock??? still stock airbox and such?? even stock zorst put back on???

really interested!!

Ha the irony... you do realise that HID kits on R33s are illegal and void your insurance policy?

The thing is, there will always be someone faster than you... so what's the point? Thats one argument, the other is I enjoy my ride for what it is already, fairly quick and quiet and goes pretty good too compared to most cars on the road. I did have a pod filter and BOV but due to my ineptness it ended up costing me some money to fix the car as the unsecured pod ruined my AFM and the BOV kept making my car stall. After running around trying to work out how to fix my car, I replaced my AFM with another and put the stock air box on and removed the BOV. Car is reliable again... I just hated my car stalling in the middle of a traffic light and on freeway lol

The zorst was fun but it was too loud for my liking, decided to sell it while its still newish.

The final decision that swayed me to keep my car stock was the real estate market... 4-5 years ago you could buy a house for 200 K, now that same house is 400 K +. So I m channeling all my funds towards my first property... cant stand renting anymore.

Im actually surprised the cop knew enough to recognize the car was stock standard...

I suppose some if them may actually know what they are talking about...

Yeah I thought "here we go, he's gonna try and come up with some b*shit excuses about my "mods"" but he didnt waste my time really.

Cheers jenkies!

smart chap. The only thing that should matter is that YOU enjoy YOUR car. Similar to modena, i have stopped modifying my car - but will be taking my almost stock car to the track during driver training and what not to enjoy the power and speed of the car. My car has only got the exhaust, pod, guages and an upgraded sound system - was thinking of putting new rotors, but will just keep the current ones.

The prices of pretty much everything is going up, so for people like myself and mr modena it will get harder to save the cash to get property and stuff. Much of my cash now is going into investing in stocks, saving for the property and saving for our business. And that in turn has kept me happy cos I have a reasonably quick car (quick enough for me anyway), and i have cash growing

Thanks chief.

Yeah I have also started investing late last year and bought myself an index fund in ASX 300... so putting into that every month. I also too have a side business growing and that requires some time and often money. But yeah I really need to get into the real estate market early this year, from then on I can start seeing what else I can do with my funds.

I was also thinking of going to a track day, but then it hit me that my brakes will need replacing, oil change and etc as the track days really push your car to the limit... so I think I will hold off for that for a bit however I do want to have a go some day... maybe a bit later. If it wasnt for the 10% deposit on the house, Id be there :P

    • Is the panel filter one that is oiled? Have you ever cleaned or touched the AFM?
    • So.... the K&N air box thingo was too big, ended up gifting it to a mate, well, by gifting it he actually supplied food and beer at the pub,  which was nice, as it will not sit on a shelf in the garage for the next 10 years I did trim up some of the existing stuff to neaten it all up and gave it some wrinkle paint, unfortunately it currently has a used and abused mish mash of different types of hose clamps, 4 big fat T bolt type (shit), and a few normal clamps of vairing sizes and brands, but..... only until the 6 constant tension black worm clamps that I ordered from EFI solutions turn up next week Currently the current hose clamps are triggering me hard, LOL Is this the final version, probably not, I really want just 2 silicone pieces, a straight bit of silicone from the filter to the MAF is easy and will happen as soon as I head into Just Jap tomorrow, the problematic part is a 30° silicone bend from the MAF to the TB that I can connect the engine breather from the head, I found that there are bulk head fittings for boat bilge pumps that should work, but until I can get a 30° silicone bend the alloy pipe, and the 11ty thousand hose clamps, are there for the foreseeable future 4 hose clamps are golden, 6 are grudgingly acceptable, the 8 currently holding it all together is just taking the piss    I've also ordered 60 more retaining wall blocks for the front yard, I mis-gonculated the height that was required to get above the base of the Photinia's (red robin's) that are the hedge behind the front fence, currently it is 2 blocks high, and about 1/2 a block short, so going 3 blocks high will be above the base of the red robin's, and allow some room for mulch
    • It is the stock air box with the panel filter. Everything else is stock except the exhaust at this point, as I also went back to the cleaned 270cc injectors. I will check the RPM when the IACV is unplugged and report back.
    • As MBS suggested if this is happening when the engine is cold you're going to want to remove the intake air regulator and verify resistance + that the shutter is physically opening and closing. At -20C should be fully open, 20C half open, over 60C fully closed. At 20C should be 70-80 ohms. For AAC valve testing using a Consult cable see if you can raise and lower the idle by commanding more or less AAC duty cycle. Hopefully it's pretty linear as well, shouldn't be like 30% AAC valve is barely idling and 40% is 1500 rpm.
