Some of you may have been wondering what is going on with DECA this year since we usually have run one by now. So here is a quick update on what is planned in 2008 for SAU and DECA.

There's going to be a couple of changes. For starters there won't be a DECA championship as such simply because this year we only have plans on running 2 of our normal event days. The 1st one is coming at the start of May and we'll have the 2nd one early November. I expect demand for these events to be high as a consequence so we'll try and give some notice before posting entries to these events. The WRX Club will also be hosting an event in April which I believe should be open entries if you want more than 2 events for the year.

However - in July we are looking at running our first ever DECA Masters event. This is going to be a limited numbers event (20 entrants) with strict guidelines on who can enter (past DECA and track experience will be required). But the day is going to be a high skill and high level of difficulty day. There will be full circuit multi lap sprints on the back track, high challenge motokhana's plus a number of exciting new twists on some old DECA favorites. Chris and I have just come back from Shepparton where we have tested the concepts out and it's sure to be cracker of a day so look forwards to more details on this event as the time approaches.

Cheers

Snowy

20 entrants only?

How will you be selecting who gets a go? More than half of those spots are already taken by important club members, leaving not much space for the rest of us.

As per Snowy's first post, it will be based on previous experience on track and DECA's. There are a number of members/committee who might previously have had a priority but wouldnt under that criteria.

Sounds an excellent idea as long as they are not so difficult only Snowy and Chris get them right!

Thats right Alan. The only "important" people are me and Chris and even we haven't decided if we are actually going to compete in this one yet as there is going to be a lot more organisational work needed through-out the day than our usual events.

That being said a lot of people are not going to be eligable for this event due to experience and skill levels - especially for this first one as it will be new to us and un-tried. The risk factor will be much higher so people like Leewah will be banned for example :( But we are looking at the moment of having a rule for entants to have previously done at least 3 DECA days and 2 track days to be eligable which should reduce the potential number of applicants significantly.

And Alan - the events we are doing are not hard to remember what to do - but they will need a good level of skill to do them well. You'll need good car control / fast track experience for the back section as there's only going to be 1 chicane on the whole track and our tests showed speeds higher than what we see even at Winton or Wakefield. Plus on the skidpan if you can't do handbrake turns / 180 flicks or have the ability to link slides you'll probably be frustrated rather than having a good time. But it was definitely noticed at the end of last year that many of our regular goers have much improved skills and this day is being aimed towards them to provide the next level of challenge. But it really isn't for beginers.

I'm confused, do you have to have competed in the previous deca events to be eligable for a place this time round? or is that only for the masters event in July, and anyone (providing they get in early) can participate in the one in early may?

The risk factor will be much higher so people like Leewah will be banned for example :)

That's discriminatory and unfair. I only hit 1 tyre wall in all my DECA efforts and I've also won a DECA event! I think you're being a tad harsh :(

Hopefully by the time this Masters DECA comes round I would have also completed the 2 track days required.

    • One thing I can tell you is, do it properly the first time. If you encounter unexpected problems just let the car sit for a week or two if you have to get some other parts or figure stuff out.  I'd have said go and use as many OEM parts as possible but since you want to change the turbo later on a custom kit is probably the better choice. Since I have no experience with RB25 just compare parts diagrams and images before buying a line kit and it should be easy to see if it has everything you need. Amayama has very good parts diagrams and part number lists, that is what I used a bunch to figure out what I might need. And don't forget to plan ahead and possibly renew other stuff that's easy to get to while you're in there doing the turbo lines. Happy wrenching
    • Update 4:   Hi all, good news. Engine is running and all the gaskets and seals seem to be working as intended. No leaks so far, even the JB Weld seems to hold. I flushed out the old coolant a few times and put in fresh coolant, not Nissan stuff, I decided to try the Ravenol Protect FL22, they claim it works for a wide variety of JDM cars and the opinions on it by some people were pretty good. And it has the nice poison green color! And man am I glad I bought a coolant system tester earlier this year, vacuum filling works wonders on this engine. I can definitely recommend this to anyone still doing it the old school way. All you need is compressed air supply. Will have to do a small test drive as soon as I can, I removed the gauge cluster again as the tacho needle was still bouncing around a bit but it was much better than before already.  I also found some cracks on all 4 tires inner and outer sidewalls. Apparently these tires should 't be parked on for extended periods or be kept under 0 degrees during storage, which I did not know. Clearly the previous owner didn't look into those details either, he probably bought them just cause they are cool semi-slicks. I'm just wondering how tf I am supposed to reach 30-80 degree tire temperatures on the public road consistenly, these tires were never going to work for my use case. I'll probably order Continental SportContact7 ones as these are the best allround summer tire available right now and I don't think I'll need anything crazier for now. Do let me know if you have experience with various tires and which ones you recommend.
    • You have no idea how many goddamn boxes I received these past three months haha Most have been put to use by now though, luckily
    • Not going to pretend I didn't do a bit of junky work this time around, but mostly due to the fact that some things I am not willing to spend days fixing right now, like wiring. I try to do most things properly the first time around.
    • Regardless of neglect or incompetence, fixing either is tedious and annoying. Most of the neglect on my car is definitely rust. I hope I can at least pass inspections later on and they won't fail the car due to slightly corroded hardlines. I was generous with rust converter and wax and it looks ok, most lines in the rear are hard to see properly anyways.  Definitely will test them though to make sure they don't rupture under pressure, in that case the car isn't going anywhere this year.
