To get the S2 ones to work on a S1 engine, is it simply a case of removing the ignitor box and running the signal wires directly to the coils, or is there more to it?

with an msd no matter what BS they spin you about using a dis4 and making it work on 6 cylinders this wont work ona rb series engine you will need a dis4 unit and a dis 2 unit or better still three dis 2 units this equals big $$$$'s. Hope this helps, plus you will need new coils!!!

Yeah I rang MSD and was quoted $1500 trade price for a DIS4+DIS2 setup. That very quickly made it not an option...
