hey everyone wen converting a gtr from 6 throttle to big single throttle im very unsure if u have to sumhow strip the 6 butterflies out of the 2nd part which attachs to the head or do u take that whole piece off all thogether cuz that main part is where water is delivered to ur engine which im very unsure wat u have to do???

well for one i will be running an apexi powe fc d-jetro word is they have trouble tunning them with the 6 throttle setup hence y i want a single throttle body setup and i want the apexi bcuz its the cheaper option to still be able to have a heads up display to keep a close on on knock......

and on closer inspection the throttle bodies are actually seperate from the other part of the manifold so yeh i guess that solves that issue

i may be mistaken but isnt one of the down sides of the power fc that it does not use the knock sensor?

PFC is one of the ONLY ECU's that uses the factory knock sensor to display a readout, its the upside of MANY ECUs.

And as for the motec/tuner/whatever - obviously he isnt as good as he thinks if he is saying it cant be done :D

Yes, but the PFC doesnt do anything about it, so unless you hear knock and keep into it whilst looking at the hand controller, or watch the hand controller whilst the car is driving, its not really much good unless you have datalogit. If you are running stock cams, there is no reason to go single throttle, the d-jetro will run it fine, just hook the map sensors up exactly as the instructions say.

If you are "hearing" knock... then the tune is simply shithouse and the tuner should be replaced quick smart.

I have never "heard" knock in any of my motors in 5 years. Its reached 40-50 on some occasions due to a cell (or two) being out, but that's it.

Any more than that has been due to too much ignition advance by my own doing.

Whilst the PFC doesn't retard like a stock ECU would, a decent tune would not reach that limitation at all.

But hot weather and/or a bad batch of fuel could certainly do it

Unless it was a race car (in which case it would be tuned for the conditions of race day anyway) then i would expect my tuner to allow a safety margin for atleast the weather which should also account for a dodgy batch of fuel.

Or maybe im just expecting to much??

i am assuming that it is tuned on one ron and only used on one ron, mine is standard but i always use 98 anyway.

do bad batches of fuel get bad enough that when filling up with 98 that it can actually be as low as 91?

You don't have to be looking at the power FC controler to see if there is any knock, if the reading goes over 60 it flashes the "Engine check" light.

    • It doesn't look like there's a lot of options out there these days, and what's out there is performance oriented aftermarket stuff (with the GTR markup) I wonder if there are other cars with similar springs, after all its just a matter of length, diameter and stiffness. Alternatively, I did see coil spacers. Probably not the best option, but could be serviceable too.
    • Final thought for now. Obviously the reason I was in there was to check everything is OK cooling wise, pull out the radiator to flush it etc, but I have to say the factory has done a hell of a lot of thinking about air management in a way they never did back in the R chassis days. The Redsport/400rs have (from engine forward) 2 large shrouded fans - radiator (incl AT cooler) - AC condenser - Intercooler Heat Exchanger and Oil cooler. There are shrouds and foam around everything to keep it pretty well sealed, which is good in that they have it sorted from factory, and bad in that I can't make any meaningful improvements there. The second red sport pump water pump is mounted in front of the rad in the airflow, so I will see if there is somewhere else I can stash that (unlikely, it is tight in there). The horns which are also in the rad airflow will be moved somewhere else, and hey who needs 2 when 1 would work For track days, I can also remove the lights which would block some airflow. Factory has already taken the smart option of ducting all air that went through the oil cooler down and out of the engine bay. This pic is taken from below looking up, so air comes through the cooler at the top of the pic then hits the shroud and is directed down and out of the engine bay through the engine bay lower cover Which of course is good for oil temps, but doesn't help the rad as it diverts 10-20% of airflow away So, no big improvements to be made here, I'll flush the rad out and put it all back together.....
    • It looks so incredibly busy in there! 馃槷
    • Next..... That escalated quicker than an Elon and Donald break up! I'll post up a specific DIY for radiator removal on these, but all I'm saying is that if you get a workshop to change your radiator for any reason and they give you a $1000 bill for it, go and hug them and thank them for not charging all the hours it took.....what a bastard of a job. I'll make some adjustments as I put it all back for faster access in the future, but it was a nightmare.
