Pardon me for my ignorance as i have never owned a turbo car before...

Im thinking about getting a turbo timer for my car, so i was reading up on the purpose of them... the description they had really confused me...

Can someone kindly explain to me th purpose of a turbo timer in simple words and als the advantage of getting one?

Also, if possible, wats a good one to get?

Also, ive got a R33 Series 2, and my turbo only goes from -7 to 2 or 3, why wont it go higher?

Is there something wrong with the turbo?

the purpose of the turbo timer is so the car can run for a bit to cool down the turbo if you've been thrashing it, you dont really need 1 you can just sit in your car for couple of minutes but most people are inpatient and prefer leaving it on and walkin away. theres nothing wrong wit your turbo, the standard boost gauge is in mm/hg not psi, so 3 is actually 7, so if it got up to 7 it would be 14 psi then you mite get issues wit your turbo. hope that helps :cool:

turbo timers are good for people that are normally in a bit of a rush and can't wait those few minutes in their car so it comes in handy sometimes. Automatic ones are good cos they determine how long the timer should run for with consideration for how much and how hard you have been boosting for. Just got to remember when you do get out and walk away from your vehicle cops aren't around cos they illegal. Make sure it's put somewhere that's not clearly visible from outside of the car or even inside the car too. Make sure you get it hooked up properly so when the handbrake is not engaged it doesn't work, i would think ne1 that installs em these days would make sure to do this but you never know.

didn't think it was for the turbo to cool down but oil to run through it to keep it good so it doesn't sieze or something, not sure though...

You're both correct but its more a heat issue... if the material cools too fast it can warp/shatter/get fractures, and/or sieze a bearing if said bearing hasnt got the lubricant keeping it cool as it changes state...

I have one built into my car alarm. its great... the keyfob has the shutdown override so I can leave the car, lock up and either wait the 90/180 secs for shutdown, or double click the fob to get it to shutdown immediately... if cops pull me over, double click the fob before getting out.... works every time

I hate TT's i really do, ive had turbo cars for years and never had a turbo failure.. its not hard to do, just drive normally and sedately for the last 5 mins before you arrive at your destination and you'll be fine.

TT's make your car easier to steal, having the ignition wires right behind the device.

It says in the owners manual if you've just been city driving to switch off straight away so I suppose 5 mins of sedate driving is exactly the same. If you're driving for 5mins off the turbo then it gives it plenty of time to cool down.

i agree with simon, there is no need for a turbo timer. not only are they an easy defect item for police, but also makes it easier for thieves to start your car.

drive off boost for the last km or two before you reach your destination then you can either turn off or wait 30 seconds. and like madaz has already mentioned in earlier posts by the time you grab your wallet, your sunnies, wind the windows up, detach your deck and take it with you, get the steering wheel lock on...it should be ample time.

this question is directed at Simon and other members who track their cars...after a hard session at mallalah how long do let your cars idle before you turn off??

i for one hate idling in the sheds.. drives me f**king mad and gives me a head ache

after a session, we usually idle at the start line for a bit, then get sent into the pits, so on the drive back its no boost and thats the cool down period. by the time i get to the shed its ready to switch off.

only exception to that was the 40 degree day at lala, i gave it a while longer to cool down

From what I understand Turbo Timers are for cars without engine oilcoolers.

A Turbo Timer allows time for the engine oil to cool down to a reasonable

temperature before turning the engine off. If you don't let the oil cool down

before switching the engine off, the turbo could get coking (dried oil

deposits) which blocks the oilways inside turbo. The result with blocked

oilways is less oil reaching the bearings inside turbo and eventually turbo

failure.

The harder, longer you push your car, the higher the oiltemps hence why

more idle time is needed to bring down the oil temps.

If you push your car hard all the time, buy a engine oilcooler with thermostat

sandwich plate and oil temp gauge to monitor oil temps.

i dont mind turbo timmers for one i use a Greddy Fully Automatic turbo timer and it has a lot more inbuilt function for eg... digital speed, battery voltage, and a whole heap other things....i got it all properly installed and its hidden in a safe spot which cannot be accessed easily....during summer or hot days i have it preset to 60 seconds and during winter down to 40 odd seconds.....but as other guys have said that you dont really need a turbo timmer i normally sit in the car till the timmer runs out and then lockup and leave....

i personally don't use one any more most times you only need 30sec cool down by the time you get your wallet of of the centre console wind some windows up check you've got everything there over 30 secs to turbo timed

geez, how old is your skyline dude. doesn't take long to push a button for electric windows to go up and you can get that added to your alarm aswell if it's able to.

well thats why you hide the turbo timmer.....even i cant get to my turbo timmer easily....but i do have a kill swtich to shut the timmer off just incase my friends in blue decide to pull me over...

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
