I think you should just buy a bucket of shit (so to speak) for your first car, say like an aussie built 31, or dare I say it a VL. It's your first car. We're in SA there a heap of cars that will give you relative trouble free motoring for under a couple of grand. Pay for nothing but the car, rego, third party insurance and oil (and likely brake pads). It'll get you from A to B. Buy a decent car when you get off your P's with comprehensive insurance.

My opinion is if you need help selecting a car chances are you don't have much automotive knowledge. And, again in my opinion, a person with limited automotive knowledge would be more likely to thrash, disrespect and/or crash their newly acquired turbo jap car because they simply don't understand the theory behind driving fast with safety and general car care.

Countless times I have read knobs posting things such "why doesn't my car go any higher than 7000rpm? I have it flat but it doesn't go any higher?". That's just one example of a noob with a skyline.

I support the people who are encouraging this guy to start small. It'll give him a chance to learn how to drive and look after a car.

:P

Young kid + fast car = crash (and the accompanying reckless behaviour)

There is no reason why an inexperienced driver needs a powerful car on the street. Period. You guys can say all you want, but thats all I see on the streets of Adelaide all the time in the 18 years I've been driving/riding.

saying 98% of 17yr olds dont have the right attitude to drive a powerful car is something that id expect from a 50year old hoon hunter laugh.gif especially considering most of my mates dont even give a shit about cars and just use them to get from A to B.

Thats just it, most teens do not have the right attitude. Whilst I've got decades to go before I hit 50, I'm old enough to have seen so much in my years of driving/riding on the road and on the track. I'm tired of seeing the same age group think their invincible and powerful and killing themselves anyway, then making up bullshit stories or excuses about their driving attitude. I've heard it all and nothing you say will be an original argument that hasn't been put into the "who gives a f*ck" bin.

If motorcyclists are limited via power/weight restrictions, I can't see why it can't apply to P-platers and even under 21s. But 'no', the Govt would rather stick up speed cameras, so you guys can cash them up before you kill yourself. There is money to be had in hoons and powerful cars.

I guess we could all use spare parts anyway :P

if the kid is gonna get a turbo car he should at least start with a more stock variety anyway, the others are right by saying to stick away from something that he won't be able to control no matter how much he might think he can, we all believe we are superman at one stage in our lives but soon realise we are just human, some skilled more than others :)

i just bought Kye's 32 and well i may think i know everything about driving well i dont

i wont be thrashing it around corners doing 260 down pt wakefield lol :)

i may squirt here and there but its a to good a car to crash gtg

thanks for helping out kyle

:(

cos it doesnt evan reach 260 rofl..

im not trying to defend young people, just picking on a few statements. i think to say that it is impossible to have enough experience by the age of 17 to be a safe and competant driver is unfair as ive seen plenty of examples that dismiss this. although that's not to say i disagree that most do not have much experience, but i think if they carry the right attitude they can be fine driving a powerful car without much experience. im not trying to talk about the general public here, im saying if this guy has the right attitude i think he would be more than fine to get an turbo import.

but i think that applies to everyone, young and old, even with experience, if you have the wrong attitude u can land urself in trouble often.

Some valid comments above....

In my opinion I would suggest an R31 silhouette manual in good condition..... do a little work to the suspension, get some rims and a decent stereo and enjoy til you build up a rating for insurance and get a little older/more experienced.

These are reasonable power output, rear drive, well balanced/reliable and decent fuel economy for a young underpaid fella.

Start saving for something with more performance down the track.... anyone in the car scene will tell you that cars will cost you a packet in running costs /maintenance/ insurance etc.

Learn to handle and respect your vehicle before upgrading to something hipo!

very valid comment HOSTILE....

dont be another P plater crashed somewhere....get to know how your car handles and the performace side of things before you get something hectick....

dude he's already shown us he doesn't have the right attitude why disrespecting his Dad so much, someone that say F U man im not going to live by the rules you lay down while i live in your house inst going to be the safest driver on the roads

if he cant follow Dads rules and wishes how do you think he's going to go following the speed limit

... im saying if this guy has the right attitude i think he would be more than fine to get an turbo import....

EDIT and yeah +1 to hostiles words of wisdom

I want my McLaren!

I want my McLaren!

I want my Mclaren!

:laughing-smiley-014: :laughing-smiley-014: :laughing-smiley-014:

All jokes aside, Agree with Martin/Hostile's comments 110%. baby steps are the key. learn to crawl before you can walk.

    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
    • My experience with Rising Sun Exports Before agreeing to the sale I tried to do as much research as I could (obviously), his Facebook reviews are 98% and he goes Live at least once or twice a week. I contacted 2 people in the UK who had used him for their imports, both had positive feedback. His explanation and talk through of the import process was thorough, answering any query no matter how stupid it was. It felt as soon as the money was sent, communication dropped off. I asked for shipping updates every 2 weeks or so, not wanting to pester him, he never had any updates. I wasn't informed the car had been dropped off at the port, I only found out by his Facebook story. I asked for the photos taken at the port, knowing he would need some for insurance purposes. I received a few 5 second clips and that's it. When asked again, he said his staff had them. Weeks later I asked again, he tells me he doesn't have any, but does have 50 photos from the original advert. I never received them. I eventually got the documents sent via WhatsApp after I mentioned the port was requesting them. I purchased a CarVX report, to find out the vehicle is a Grade R with recorded accident damage, first recorded in 2017 when it was first auctioned. He never told me the grade, then again I didn't ask. His response was "Grade R means nothing, it wasn't chassis damage". Still, I would have liked to have been informed about it. Jon prides himself on being open and honest when it comes to inspecting cars, it's his main job doing so at the auctions for customers. When the vehicle arrived in the UK I noticed a few little cosmetic issues. It's a 21 year old car so it wasn't going to be mint condition. The side skirts are cracked on each corner and the sealant is failing. The front grill on the bonnet/hood isn't secured very well, mounting studs are missing. Both minor things, but again, it would have been nice to be told. During a Facebook Live walk around video of the vehicle, he mentioned it has a front Whiteline anti roll bar/sway bar. While on the inspection ramp, I noticed the stock item has been installed. When first questioned, his response was "the ARB? Switched? Since when, it never had them". Since sending video and photo evidence I've not received a response. I'm probably being over critical of the overall condition of an old car, but all I wanted was honesty (which he claims to have). I'm aware I wasn't his only customer, he's busy doing XYZ but other reviews praise him for great communication with regular updates and photos, I felt I didn't receive the same treatment.
    • I was able to get some underside photos while the car was on the ramp The suspension is all Altezza/IS200/IS300 so getting part's will hopefully be less of a headache
    • Welcome to my 2004 Toyota Mark ii IR-V Fortuna (series 2) With a 1JZ-GTE powerplant under the bonnet (hood) it'll give me plenty of scope for power upgrades. For those who aren't familiar with imports, the 1JZ-GTE is a 2.5L 6 cylinder VVTi engine with a single turbocharger. This has the factory R154 5 speed gearbox, along with a aftermarket 2 way LSD differential (brand unknown). Under the arches are a set of CST Zero 1 alloys, 18x9 +30 225/40 up front and 18x9.5 +15 265/35 on the rear. The car was quite low in Japan and there's evidence of the wheels catching the rolled arches/fenders. The tyre's aren't great so I'm in two minds whether to replace both or just the tyres and put up with the wider wheels on the rear. The car still uses stock brakes with the addition of some braided hoses. The exterior is stock with the exception of a BN Sports front bumper and a replacement Fortuna grill  Moving to the interior, the steering wheel has been replaced with a dished MOMO steering wheel (which will get swapped for my Momo Tuner for the time being) Defi Link Gauges are mounted above the climate controls and on the A pillar, the Oil Temp,Oil Pressure,Water Temp and Boost gauges should help with spirited and track driving  The stock seats have been replaced with some retrimmed Recaro bucket seats. Being a larger build these are a little snug, unfortunately the orange isn't for me so I'll look into replacing these down the line. Other modifications include a twin plate clutch, Blitz intercooler, Evolve alloy radiator, a stainless exhaust with decat, HKS EVC-S boost controller and coil overs
