Hey guys,

Bought my r33 series 2 a few months back and it was manufactured early 1996. I have recently found out that theres such thing as a series 1.5. I have also read somewhere on google that the series 2 started in the later months of 1996.

I was thinking all you had to do was get a series 1, change the interior, front bar and fog lights, and the wing, all to series 2 parts. Then you have what looks like a series 2 on your hands. Obviously this would only work if the car was manufactured in 1996 some time.

I just wanted to know how i can tell that i have a series 2. Call me paranoid but i almost bought a turbo pulsar Q that was made to look like a sss a few years back.

So maybe one of you know exactly what to look for, or what numbers should be in the vin etc.

Sorry if this has been covered but i couldnt find any info on it for the past hour.

Cheers fellas

Im not 100% sure what else, but series 1 and 2 have a drematic headlight change, that also changes the bonnet guards and bumper.

Series 1 look more "GTR" Styled than the Series 2.

I dont know how easy it is to swap the parts over to make a fake S2.. im sure someone can help.

changing a series 1 to a series 2 is an entire front chop... the reo bar is different, and no one does it...

you can tell by your headlights normally, and the bonnet, and the rear facia, and the steering wheel...

There is such a thing as a 1.5, which is what I have... it has the series 1 front, series 2 wing, series 2 engine...

check for the ignitor. if you have an ignitor pack bolted to the back of your coil pack cover, then its a series 1 engine. as for body parts, they are easily exchanged and simple bolt ons. theres many different little things that can determin the difference, but the only way to be sure is in the vin number. Call nissan with the vin and they should be able to tell you what month it was made.

yes people do, do it. i helped a mate convert his s1 to a s2 front end only a couple of months ago. s2 rio bars can be found easily off a wrecker and bolt straight up to the s1. panels are easy enough to come across also....

at the end of the day, everything can be swapped between both series. best way to check if your that worried about it, is to call nissan with ur vin.

Cool thanks for the help. I also heard that they have the exact same chasis, so wouldnt they be able to change the bonnet and headlights as well. Plus all the little things.

I know it would take a little work to do it, but i bought it from a dealer and im sure if they could make more money from making a series 1 look like a series 2 they would.

I dont know what the igniter looks like but ill try find out if that will help me. Also thanks for the pics, i have the series 2 headlights but they r dirty, kinda yellowish which sux.

S2 also have the high spoiler, different s/wheel, driver a/bag as standard etc.

The ignitor (ign module) is a black box thats bolted to the top of the head (in the middle) towards the back of the motor

If its not there, you'll see 4 holes where it should of been. S2 have it built into the oem ecu

chassis are the same, wouldnt be ecnomical to change. Rad support panel is different

Don't worry about the headlights either... they clean up to a crystal clear compared to the series 1 lights...

Go get a cutting compund onto it, and scrub your arm off... it will look like glass in no time!

I use Mothers Cut & Polish I think... it's in the car, I'll check later if you want :P

Cool thanks guys.

In regards to the headlights, i bought a second hand one that has clear glass compared to mine. The thing is i cant get the glass off to clean inside. I tried cutting the black silicone but couldnt pull it apart. How do i do it?

Not strictly correct as S1.5 came with the higher spoiler standard airbag and the S2 motor with ignitor module module in the ecu and other minor differences such as reversed coilpack mounting pattern. I am 99% sure that the S1.5 was phased out late 1995/early 1996.

If you have a cloth interior, S15/N15/ S2 R33 steering wheel, S2 Dash, S2 "rough" dash fascia, painted rear boot fascia, and S2 front headlights and front bar then you can be pretty sure its a S2... failing that read the S1/S2 FAQ as I cant be bothered pointing out anything else :P ...

FAST is still the 100% sure option though

Yeah a quick drive to anyone that really knows 33's woul dbe able to tell you beyond a doubt wether or not it is or isn't an actual series 2...

I think November 95 was the last series 1.5, but I'm not sure, it's just that, thats what mine is, and I have seen December 95 Series 2's I believe...

easy spots are the interior

s1 dash surround is flat and bland

s2 dash surround is bubbled and has a "finish"

same applies to the dash cluster with the warning lights etc

s1 dash warning lights are flat and black plain

d2 dash warning lights are bevelled into the plastic and clear/crisp

Well i dont know what the ignitor module looks like, all i can see is where the coil packs plug connects to another plug and wires.

Im goin with a mate and his work friend cause he wants 2 get a supra from a Sydney car sales, so ill check out the skylines while im there. Hopefully i remember all the differences because i seem to always forget when im there.

You guys make working out stuff so much easier. Cheers

    • I've heard the Tomei USA head gaskets are decent if you want to o-ring the heads but otherwise not recommended.
    • The 296mm rotors are the R33 turbo brakes. The 310mm rotors are the R34 turbo brakes. The calipers are nearly the same, but not. They're the same caliper but the R34 caliper has longer legs so that it sits out far enough to go over the rotor. The pads are the same for both. When you say, "I bough tsome EBC"....did you just mean pads? Or rotors? 310mm rotors fit under 17" wheels. There may be some wheels without enough clearance though. I can't fit my fingers between the barrel of my wheel and the "corners" of my R34 calipers, but there is plenty of room behind the spokes. This is on Enkei RPF1. You can fit 324mm rotors inside a 17" wheel, but I'd be willing to bet that it would be close to impossible with the Nissan/Sumitomo caliper (using an adapter, of course), because the Sumitomo caliper is fatter than the Brembo caliper that is supposed to go on the 324mm rotors.
    • Hi. Can someone tell me what brakes(and mainly WHERE) can i buy brakes on R34 GTT? I bought some EBC which SHOULD go on my car(i have GT but it has GTT brakes) but it does not fit, Brakes are "too" small(296mm) Are 310mm be good or? I have 17 inch wheel so no "big boys" but for me driving i just need one that fits and i can get here in EU/Czech.
    • Since winter isn't that harsh anymore in Poland, i will definetely drive it 365 days a year 😉. But if the snow hits i will try it for sure and let U know. Only swap i am planning to do is of course R34 GTR front 😍.
    • Hey. Very valuable information about pitwork, I will pay attention when buying any consumable parts 🙏 As for the carpets - I got a handful of information from nengun, from which it appears that indeed the carpets for the driver's side are OEM. They are not able to show me any pictures due to the long chain of different sales entities but after I place the order, as soon as the goods arrive at the nengun warehouse from which they will send the shipment to me they can send me photos and if my purchase differs from OEM I can immediately return it / cancel the purchase. I think I will give it a try 😉. Of course i'll let you know what's what as soon as i get them P.s. I know the topic is not relevant to the thread, but both nengun and amayama have these SICK 😍 trunk room lamps available. Do you know anyone who ordered them? I need to have one in my car
