Bloody P platers!
Im from the Uk and moved here 2 years ago,we dont have any P plate laws over there, but i was wondering what would happen if you passed your driving test in the Uk and came over here and bought a big powered car and drove it as normal without any plates(you can drive over here for up to a year on a Uk licence).i passed my test in 1999 and immediately bought a Mazda 323 gtr and then a few starlet turbos and Gtirs.now ive got a r33 gts-t,ive put my wife on the insurance for when shes off her Ps in 2 months time
why is it different for autos? i mean at the fly means the tranny doesnt matter right?

according to hyperrev, its 245ps and i think 1390 kg

No idea, this article just states that the auto gts-t has 180kw,20kg more weight and 20 Nm less torque than the manual variant.

Its turbo = its illegal

Wrong.

I thought i had it confirmed just did a google search and found http://www.importdriver.com.au/Coupe_Targa.htm

I understand 160kW sounds about right since i see that same figure everywhere.. but for the weight it says 1290KG.. It doesnt specify if its the 2 door coupe or the 4 door because the 2 door would be lighter.. and http://www.thenissanskyline.com/r32-specs.php says 1320KG for the Type M but again doesnt specify 2 door or the 4 door.. Anyone know the specific weight of the 93 R32 Type M 2 Door Coupe?

EDIT: Ok looks like its around 1320KG.. so if i get pulled over and the cop asks how much KW and weight, i pretty much say 160KW at the flywheel and over 1320KG (taking into account my rims & petrol).. so would i get off fine with not having a high powered vehicle considering that equals to 121kW per Tonne (Calculated on http://webapps.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrne/vr...213calc1)

Rims and fuel are not taken into account. They use a factory weight figure and factory power figure.

The same article as above states the RB20DET makes 158kw

Ahaha I regret starting this thread because I new so many people would get caught up in the intricacies of the laws, when I posted this assuming people new about these new laws, and was simply wondering who has been caught.

i got my license in 2006 aswel.. what makes the r33 illegal? it's under power to weight stock.

I know 110% its illegal i was taken to court over it, Because i didnt pay, The police man who got me for high power vichcle even brang in someone to represent vicroads and a enginer. I even have the info they used in court to prove it.

Wasn't that post on the main automotive forum about driving a turbo on your P's scary enough? The dude basically said if you hit anyone, anything, insurance will not cover you. Forget hitting a $30,000 - $50,000 car, what if you break someone's back in the process, can you afford the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical bills? You'd have to declare bankruptcy before you even turn 20, imagine have that mark on your record for the rest of your life. No thanks.

I've said that to a few of my friends that wanted to drive a turbo car and it has completely changed their mind about it. I must admit, that was also the reason why I'm not driving my skyline.

TMU don't ASK you what your weight and power output is, they have a little chart that tells them.

TMU asked me for the power estimate of the car.

Using their database value KERB WEIGHT (weight is displayed when they bring up your rego details, TMU showed me on screen), the R32 is 1250kg.

Using my estimate of 158kw flywheel, this makes the r32 126.4kw/tonne

Thus making it illegal as its over the 125kw/tonne law.

However, the series 2 r32's has more weight, but im not sure if this is reflected in their database...

:D

Are you sure the insurance campany wont cover you? I am pretty sure if they let you get insurance with them iam pretty sure they would pay for damages.

It'll depend on the insurance company and how much they're willing to investigate, but there's a high chance they won't pay out. Like KezR33 has said, the insurance company will do anything to get out of paying, but you could get lucky (I wouldn't risk it).

honestly, you know the risks...it will happen no matter what you were just bloody lucky they did not nail you. plus the insurance company does not handle things like cars that certain people ar enot allowed to drive. because 1 you may not be the driver but the owner, 2. its money in there pocket that they can keep if you get involved in a accident because you were breaking the law.

and yes i have had friends done and i tell them the same thing...you break the law and your gonna get caught if you keep doing it

the only way you would be covered is if you are paying the FULL cover insurance which is bloody expensive, that way it doesnt matter if you are in the worng or not you would still be covered. but third party or otehr smaller insurances and your screwed

Auto sucks about 9kw to operate

i c. well either way my car is illegal for me to drive. always has been

Its turbo = its illegal
Wrong.

:)

So a P-plater can drive a turbo R32 ? For some unknown reason i was under the impression that a P-plater cannot drive a turbo powered car.

...didnt realise the dude was talking about before July 2007 till he stated afterwards.

    • I'm normally copping my own abuse from neglecting my daily drivers. "Those suspension bushes will last a bit more", "Don't worry about the oil leak, just keep topping it up". The project cars I'm always doing things slowly on them as I'm wanting them to be done better, and neater, and nicer. Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
    • Every time I pull my 3x gauges out of the console and see the crack-addict way that I did the wiring, and I just can't bring myself to tear it all apart and "make it nice", because it is currently working. In fact, the last time I was in there I probably made it worse.
    • The best part is when you own the car long enough that you look back and find your OWN ham fisted amateur shit!
    • The annoying part about neglect, is when you start to replace one thing, and find ten more broken things. Ham fisted monkey repairs you normally only find out about when trying to do something unrelated! Ha ha   Neglect you can kind of anticipate the huge costs to fix it all. Ham fistedness is normally a shock the first time your work on a new old car, as everything "looked" good before.
