Hi all,

Just wondering if neone could tell me what this is or what they think it is. Basically i can only here it at idle and very low in the rev range as its not that loud just irratating (Spelling). Its coming from the engine bay and sounds to me like a leaking exaust manifold but it did it before i got my extractors and now it still does it with the new ones and new gasket, i changed the oil and its still there? someone once told me that its normal for Double Over Head Cam engines to do this but i disagree, the car still runs fine and isnt lacking in power its just really starting to annoy me.

Ne Help Much Appreciated.

Cheers

John

In my old 202 it was the hydraulic lifters, and my GTS-T makes this same sound. I was told cheap oils can make your car do this, but I have been running fully synthetic in mine, so Im not too sure whats going on. Anyways, It never hurt my 202 and my 33 is going strong.

  • 2 weeks later...

could be hydaulic lifters.

I have been told that Mazda's have a bad problem with this, and they have a special oil additive to fix it.

Put it in with the oil run for 20mins until noise is gone, then drain oil. Apparently it (oil) comes out black, thick and lumpy. Basically the additive is an internal engine cleaner.

Ask your friendly Mazda dealer about some

"yeah i always get bad fumes in the cabin if sitting in traffic for a while. gives me a saw throat after extended preiods, im assuming its not real good for you."

N/A_R33,

mate you have an exhaust leak, go to an exhaust specialist and have it checked out...they will find where it is...

i had the same problem with a previous car, after changing the exhaust manifold gasket many times and not fixing the problem, i discovered that the manifold face was warped and not sealing properly...

had the manifold machined and problem fixed!

Cheers

i had it checkd and it seems one of the 'rear' bolts for the exhaust manifold is missing, sposedly this is a common problem in 33 gtsts and 95% of the time people dont bother replacing them as its a huge job, i can definitely hear the clicking of the air leaking but as far as power/econoy nothing seems to be affected, two different tuning shops told e not to worry about it unless it starts to get worse, any suggestions ? anyone know how much it usually costs to get the bolt fixed ?

I got mine engine tap tap tap last month when cold start, noise gone when warm.

On way back from GOR cruise, my car misfiring ratatatata hard on 3rd gear acceleration. The next morning oil pressure running low, car has flat spot everywhere but that cold start tap tap tap noise totally gone....... what the?????????

Car is slowly getting better and better to drive, but still a bit flat spot and won't make boost on 1st gear (gauge only goes to 0). Now boost only comes in 2nd gear or higher (gauge goes to a bit over the halfway mark between 0 & +7).

On cold start, oil pressure will go past 6 mark on +/-1200rpm idle. When warm, on 700rpm idle oil pressure is a little less than 2. When driving around 2500-3000rpm oil pressure is about 4, and cruising 4th gear 60kph about 2000-2500rpm the oil pressure drops to about 3 or 3.5 mark.

Strange..... very strange......

    • I am yet to see anyone ever regret a quaife or helical. ...other than drifting/skidpan duties. I kind of want to upgrade my factory helical with a Quaife (but really it's not ultimately that different, and is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING), that's how good the hype is about them, that I want to try them 'just to see'
    • D2 and Ksport are essentially the same thing and basically just generic Taiwanese manufacture. Better than ChinaBay crap, but... not top shelf. Öhlins have got to be some of the best dampers around, so likely to be a good option. It's going to get to the point though where I suggest you buy from Oz. We have at least 2x excellent options here. If I were you though, I'd be talking to KW about doing something for the R33. There's bugger all difference between that and the 32. In GTR land, anyway.
    • KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.
    • Well, the good news is you have more than one very good option for new coilovers in and around your country. Worth the drive over to KW to talk about GTR stuff.
    • Fair enough, I am in no way a tire expert so I'm not familiar with all the terms and conditions. I'll definitely note down the AD09 to potentially try in the future. Rain is not too big of a concern for now as I will probably only drive in the rain when I have to. And considering I still lack experience driving the GTR I'd more than likely take it easy too. I have coilovers in the car but as I barely got to drive so far I never bothered to even check if they are adjustable haha. The suspension is almost entirely old and worn as well so I suppose when I eventually fix that in the future that would make a huge difference.
