Hey guys,

As most of you are aware this new option that Just-Jap provides is a fantastic solution to dodge the hacking of the drivers side engine bay that you have to do for other intercooler installs. Which is very illegal if you have a R33 with Airbags.

However the question that i raise now, even though there is NO cutting of a whole in the engine bay for these new kits, is it legal to have a FMIC mounted on a R33 with airbags? or is it still illegal to even have a FMIC mounted cause it may interfere with airbags still?

Im really keen on these kits but still unsure on how legal these are.

P.S i would run the stock airbox so the FMIC would act as my 1 intake mod :P

As u said in Vic you are allowed an intake mod, so the FMIC would be legal. Do u know where the airbag sensors are located ? If u dont need to relocate the sensors then it should be ok. Speak to the regulatory authority in your state. Vicroads?

I fully understand these intake EPA laws and i intend to follow them, however im asking whether having a FMIC on an R33 with airbags is legal or illegal (when using Just-Japs new intercooler kits that you dont need to cut holes for)

Yeah i have a K&N panel filter at the moment. If i was to go to POD then i would most likely build a new box from fibreglass or something incorperating the factory snorkel etc. Not really thinking too seriously bout that at moment tho.

With the R34 SMIC ya can barely tell the difference from the outside (of course duh) but even when you look under the car, the drip tray plastics hide it all anyways and the intake ducting makes it hard to see too. :(

Now i have to make the decision whether to get one of these stealth Just-Jap kits or run a R34 SMIC.

Personely I would go with the FMIC. It is legal on your car and has a large serface area for cooling, with pretty good flow and little persure drop.

I have a FMIC in the stealth style (made it myself) and I painted it black for the extra stealth look.

But thats just me, SMIC is still a very good option.

Did you notice a difference when fitting the 34 cooler? or much of a muchness from the stock.

Who did your pipework ? How big is ur core ? 600 x 300?

I have a 600 x 300 x 70 core already but i would need the pipework made up to run back underneath the core, but doing this i am also affraid if will hang to low below my front bar. Hence why im asking what size ur core is.

My core is a HKS 600 x 300 x 70 and I used BLITZ piping and welded the angled return onto the side of the cooler myself at work, on their time. :(

It all went together pretty easy.

I have an M-SPORTS front bar and it covers the piping fine. The M-SPORTS bar is only a little lower than a stock bar. The stock one should cover the piping as long as you mount your cooler to the underside of the bumper re-enforcement.

Why didn't you hide the return pipe behind the fmic, instead of coming back under it.

I think it would look a lot neater and make fark all difference to the flow of the cooler.

so if i made an underneath pipe like urs the 180 bend would be alot sharper. I called up a few mobs and they wanted something like 200-300 bucks for the pipe... so i figured it wouldnt be worth it.

Extra couple hunder and i can get a new kit :S

Plus 200-300 bucks was step if it were to hang down and get caught on every speed bump!!

How much u recon EAS would charge to make a pipeup like ~R33AzzA~'s.

All workshops i called up said about 200-300 which i found pritty step, but then they told me it was alot of work involved :S unless they just didnt wanna do it hahaha

It just seems there isnt enough room to run it behind / under like ur suggest and seems it would hang down alot.

You can make your own piping, buy some exhuast bends (mandrel) and some tube, tack it together and get someone to finish welding it.

It might be mild steel but its easy to do, and not to expensive. If you need tube I can supply some to you as I have a heap of 2.5 inch tube at work.

Mandrel bends are avalible at truck bits for around $10 bucks a bend (don't quote me on price).

Thoughts on mild steel piping? Painted on the outside of course.

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch.     • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
