hey skit..

adj cam gear for r34 n/a....advanced/retarded timing?

whats it mean and what will give me most gains?

generally retarding the exhaust cam abit gets the gains, but it needs to go on a dyno so you can dial the cam in, you cant just stick it on and guess

good luck with it, na setups are definately fun, and for a bit of inspiration, my older bros stock na r33 (expect catback exhaust and CAI) did a 14.6 down the plex, albiet it seems to be a freak.

hey Cara...

yeah i might pplan to get cams down the track...just trying to see what my options are at the moment...

128rwkw is insane!!

thanks Steve, yeah gnna try an get all my mods installed then dyno'd.

u could do i what i do and get your car on the dyno before and after any mods that way you will have an idea of what (or any) power increase you have gotten.

ive got a scrapbook with all my dyno charts in it....in order too :D

ok if your goin to buy a r34 GTR then why the hell would u waste the money on a n/a car???? i realy dont get that!

why dont you save the ridiculous amount of cash your goin to spend on a n/a car that will produce f#*k all power and just use it to mod the GTR????

not all of us will ever be able to afford a gtr.....one day for some of us it will happen and for others it will be just a dream

there is nothing wrong with spending money on a n/a. im more than happy too keeps me unique and you a sheep following the rest of the flock buying your gtst's and gtr's

start with forged internals? billet rods crank, oversized bearings, the block work, honning, oil gallery's have to behiflowed to the head, yet a smaller restrictor has to be fitted sounds odd you might think? i assure you it is neccassary, then theres the oil pump, you going to need a bigger one than whats in there, you ll need to gate the sump, have the fly, crank, harmonic balancer rebalanced, blueprint everything for that nice 10 000 sustained burnout without throwing a rod out the side. heavier conrod bolts, grab the craddles form a gtr block, then theres the heavy duty head bolts to think about

and thats just the bottom end, there goes 10 grand right there

then theres the head, the hiflow, port polish, valve guides, new seals , magnesium fill valves valve springs , retaners springs hats , buckets, cam shafts, head compression, not to mention new plenum chamber, exhaust extractors and flange gaskets you going to go through because of the lumpy idle it will have keeps working the joins.

theres another 7 to 10 grand if your serious about it.

then theres the auxilarys, you gonna need a four core radiator to keep it all below 110 degrees, along with a couple of good qaulity oil coolers, breather catch can that can hold atleast 2 litres with a drain back and one way valve to the sump. you cant use direct fire coils anymore cause they keep frying with an idle of 2500, theres the wasted spark system, another couple of grand

the aftermarket ecu to run those lumpy cams, 3000 dollars including the hours of dyno time just to get it all running let along making big power....

then you ll need a decent clutch, with a couple of extra drive shafts and 7 spare gearboxes(thasts how many i went thru anyway)

then theres the breathing, you running 14.1 compression by this stage and need atleast a 90 ml throttle body...if not two...

dude by the time this is finished you might aswell buy a gtr, thats what i did. ''good luck" ill help ya burn ya money.

sounds like pretty much what i've told people from day one. although i don't agree with the last line. power wise you'll make more power with the GTR, but money wise you're likely to spend the same kind of dosh (however you have a more expensive initial outlay with the GTR). that said the NA car will sound, feel and be a better car (personal preference) - and no one can take that away from you. if you want power go a 2JZ or a 1UZFE.

:( How did I miss this thread for so long!?!

RB na power = HUGE amounts of $$$

Turbo = Cheap, easy KW.

Thats why its so popular.

NA's can be very fun to drive/thrash but NA's fun is not in power..

gtr's have come down alot in price recently and are more affordable then ever before

ok why did u buy a n/a skyline?????? my guess is because of the new laws bought in, am i right????

if these laws wern't in place im sure u would of went out and bought the turbo version. And there is a reason why everyone goes out and buys them, its the smart thing to do.

lol who says one is not allowed to enjoy their non turbo?

i bought my non turbo beause of the new p-plater laws.

but yeah i probably would have gone for a gtt if it werent for those laws.

gotta say alot of turbo's have little things here and there play up.

i'm not restricted by p plate restriction. never have been and i didn't choose to buy a turbo variant purely because my car is predominantly used for driving to uni, shops, work, etc. it makes no difference if i had a gtr, gtst or gts it would still take me the same amount of time to get me where i'm going.

i can guarantee you that a large portion of the turbo skyline drivers don't/can't even make use of a large chunk of their power. who cares if you make 300rwkw - you're still driving at 100km like i am and like any other barina out there. so really you're making 300rwkw because of your ego.

however for that little portion that do any sort of motorsport, good on them. that said, my personal findings have been that a portion of these so called 'turbo drivers' can't even make use of their awesome turbo power. my track times at QR are an indication of that. having a turbo skyline does not make you a good driver, having more power than the other guy does not make you a better driver either. so for some of them it all comes down to materialistic wank 'i make 300rwkw woohoo my e-penis is big'.

i'll reiterate that i am talking about the select portion of 'turbo drivers'

all the gtst/gtr owners seem to think that the gts owners are green with envy - seriously who are they kidding? if the car does what you want it to do why deviate from that? if i wanted to carry lots of people i'd buy a mini bus, if i want to have a nice handling car which is decent on fuel, looks ok, has a wide variety of performance parts, responds well to mods and gets me from A to B then i'd buy an NA skyline (my choice 5 years ago).

if anyone has a problem in other people's choice in cars, whether it be due to personal, financial or practical reasons then i suggest you keep it to yourselves.

And there is a reason why everyone goes out and buys them, its the smart thing to do.

UWISSH! by your above statement you are implying non turbo drivers are dumb. can you clarify this further and if so, i expect an apology. you WILL NOT discriminate! be careful with your wording please.

im in sa love so the p plate laws havent come in affect here YET.

however i am on my full licence anyway so it wont affect me. the reson why i got a n/a? you really wanna know? cause i didnt want to wrap myself around a f****g tree thats why. ive got a brain im not stupid.

ive never owned a performance car before my lil 34 and im happy with what i have got and will be happy for a long time.

stop trying to be a hero and leave the n/a car owners alone. not everyone can afford a turbo car, especially with the way insurance is these days. and the cost of petrol aswell.

so the smart thing to do is to go and encourage p platers to go buy a turbo car is it? (if the laws werent around) im sorry but a high powered vehicle in the hands of an inexperienced driver is bad bad news in my eyes.

the smart thing for you to do is to go away.

This is what I dont like in the scene!

People choose their car according to what they;

- need

- want

- can afford

- is practicle for them

We choose the mods we want and how we want to spend our money because it is what will make us happy and happier with our car.

Modifing is about understanding, apprecieating and respecting ALL forms of late model jap car scene: boro drifters, circuit, show, togue, function, form, 4's, 6's 8's, NA, Turbo, V-tech etc. etc.

Eug makes a brillant point. The speed limit is the law, whether you have 24hp or 432KW. For more of an insight about what I think about power, see my sig. Too many people who drive turbo cars want more power, less than half of them know how to fully extract the powr of their engines or even how to control a their car fully. Many people use power to make up for the lack of skill.

This does not mean NA's are in any way shape or form are "inferior". I have quite easily kept up to more powerfull turbo cars through twisties. Look at Cara's car, easily blow off alot of turbo cars. Whats it up to now? 180kw?

So before any one rags on anyone else.. remember its a personal thing. We are all here because we all share the same pasion.

    • This. As for your options - I suggest remote mounting the Nissan sensor further away on a length of steel tube. That tube to have a loop in it to handle vibration, etc etc. You will need to either put a tee and a bleed fitting near the sensor, or crack the fitting at the sensor to bleed it full of oil when you first set it up, otherwise you won't get the line filled. But this is a small problem. Just needs enough access to get it done.
    • The time is always correct. Only the date is wrong. It currently thinks it is January 19. Tomorrow it will say it is January 20. The date and time are ( should be ! ) retrieved from the GPS navigation system.
    • Buy yourself a set of easy outs. See if they will get a good bite in and unthread it.   Very very lucky the whole sender didn't let go while on the track and cost you a motor!
    • Well GTSBoy, prepare yourself further. I did a track day with 1/2 a day prep on Friday, inpromptu. The good news is that I got home, and didn't drive the car into a wall. Everything seemed mostly okay. The car was even a little faster than it was last time. I also got to get some good datalog data too. I also noticed a tiny bit of knock which was (luckily?) recorded. All I know is the knock sensors got recalibrated.... and are notorious for false knock. So I don't know if they are too sensitive, not sensitive enough... or some other third option. But I reduced timing anyway. It wasn't every pull through the session either. Think along the lines of -1 degree of timing for say, three instances while at the top of 4th in a 20 minute all-hot-lap session. Unfortunately at the end of session 2... I noticed a little oil. I borrowed some jack stands and a jack and took a look under there, but as is often the case, messing around with it kinda half cleaned it up, it was not conclusive where it was coming from. I decided to give it another go and see how it was. The amount of oil was maybe one/two small drops. I did another 20 minute session and car went well, and I was just starting to get into it and not be terrified of driving on track. I pulled over and checked in the pits and saw this: This is where I called it, packed up and went home as I live ~20 min from the track with a VERY VERY CLOSE EYE on Oil Pressure on the way home. The volume wasn't much but you never know. I checked it today when I had my own space/tools/time to find out what was going on, wanted to clean it up, run the car and see if any of the fittings from around the oil filter were causing it. I have like.. 5 fittings there, so I suspected one was (hopefully?) the culprit. It became immediately apparent as soon as I looked around more closely. 795d266d-a034-4b8c-89c9-d83860f5d00a.mp4       This is the R34 GTT oil sender connected via an adapter to an oil cooler block I have installed which runs AN lines to my cooler (and back). There's also an oil temp sensor on top.  Just after that video, I attempted to unthread the sensor to see if it's loose/worn and it disintegrated in my hand. So yes. I am glad I noticed that oil because it would appear that complete and utter catastrophic engine failure was about 1 second of engine runtime away. I did try to drill the fitting out, and only succeeded in drilling the middle hole much larger and now there's a... smooth hole in there with what looks like a damn sleeve still incredibly tight in there. Not really sure how to proceed from here. My options: 1) Find someone who can remove the stuck fitting, and use a steel adapter so it won't fatigue? (Female BSPT for the R34 sender to 1/8NPT male - HARD to find). IF it isn't possible to remove - Buy a new block ($320) and have someone tap a new 1/8NPT in the top of it ($????) and hope the steel adapter works better. 2) Buy a new block and give up on the OEM pressure sender for the dash entirely, and use the supplied 1/8 NPT for the oil temp sender. Having the oil pressure read 0 in the dash with the warning lamp will give me a lot of anxiety driving around. I do have the actual GM sensor/sender working, but it needs OBD2 as a gauge. If I'm datalogging I don't actually have a readout of what the gauge is currently displaying. 3) Other? Find a new location for the OEM sender? Though I don't know of anywhere that will work. I also don't know if a steel adapter is actually functionally smart here. It's clearly leveraged itself through vibration of the motor and snapped in half. This doesn't seem like a setup a smart person would replicate given the weight of the OEM sender. Still pretty happy being lucky for once and seeing this at the absolute last moment before bye bye motor in a big way, even if an adapter is apparently 6 weeks+ delivery and I have no way to free the current stuck/potentially destroyed threads in the current oil block.
