mesmerized
so i'm driving along at 40kph and all of a sudden I hear a horrible shreaking noise coming from the engine, then there's smoke, a nasty smell and a strange rattling noise. I pull over, pop the bonnet, and low and behold one of the belts has snapped. the engine still runs, but i don't want to damage anything by driving it. A. which belt have i snapped? B. will it cause any serious damage to drive it to a local mechanic 5k's away? or should i just get it towed? or is this something the NRMA can rectify? C. how much do you think it'll cost to fix? cheers in advance Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/219531-which-belt-have-i-snapped/ Share on other sites
GTR-32U
its a little hard to tell from the photos as they are a little isolated. I am guessing you have blown the one that turns the air con compressor. Run the car for a few minutes and see if your air con gets cool is the best way to find out.More than likely an idler pulley may have exploded also. They do tend to seize ...however by the photos I just cant quite see enough to be able to tell you if it has or not.if you are gonna drive it make sure you pull out any loose peices of belt first as you dont want it getting caught on existing belt and throwing it also....not an expensive fix however Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/219531-which-belt-have-i-snapped/#findComment-3872607 Share on other sites
Duncan
air con belt is broken....not sure why though. could be a seized air con compressor? fine to drive to a mechanic just pul the borken belt out first Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/219531-which-belt-have-i-snapped/#findComment-3872611 Share on other sites
B0oStEr
It looks like your a/c belt. Your a/c compressor has probably seized. Just pull out the broken belt and it should be fine to drive around. NA_Goodness
An hour or 2 maybe. Drop it off in the morning, pick it up at the end of the day, that way it'll definately be done by the time you pick it up. Duncan
depends if the broken belt is the problem or just a symptom. if the compressor is dead/seized it needs to be replaced and the system regassed Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/219531-which-belt-have-i-snapped/#findComment-3874129 Share on other sites
