Hi was just thinking about getting a TS TYPE FIBREGLASS BONNET FOR SKYLINE R33 GTS-T...Don't really want to go carbon fibre cuz i'm going more for looks and i the panda look is not my thing; as it's a white car. Does anyone know where i could possibly purchase this item for lees than $695.00; seems to be the going rate.

Also what happens with rain with vented bonnets...? and is a fibreglass bonnet any good. Heavier than normal? dents easy? etc.

Cheers

I'm in the same boat as you... hahahah...

When you think about it, they'll both some close to eachother cost... CF copies will be around $750 and FB ones will be around $500 but then you'll have to spend another $250 or so to paint the damn thing, so both will be the same... then why not go CF?

You can get them from various places, i.e. www.carmate.com.au, www.nismo.com.au go buy it off some of the forum sellers here...

Good luck.

How hard is it to paint carbon fibre?

When you say copies? do you mean they are not light? Cuz there is no point buying a heavy carbon fibre if it is there for looks and im gonna paint over the top of it....

Well mate, the reality is - a genuine full CF bonnet will cost anywhere between $1,500 - $2,500. I don't know about you, but I can't justify spending that much for an original full CF bonnet, say, ordered directly from Nismo or Top Secret Motorsports etc from Japan. All the CF bonnets you see floating around in Austalia are mostly copies with around, say, 60% CF on top and the bottom is mainly fibreglass - if you go for the even cheaper ones that's around $400-$600, the top is really glossy-looking so it's not even true CF anyway - and yes, all this is more for looks.

Most CF Bonnet copies come from China or other surrouding Asian countries. If it's slightly performance you're after, then go a CF bonnet copy, if it's true performance that you're after and can afford it, I would go full CF - whereas it's just the look you want, you can always get a FG one and see if you can get it painted cheap.

I'm in the same situation as you - can't decide what to do... and I really can't afford a full FC one to be honest...but all the copies that I've seen just don't cut it as they all look so shonky... also, have you seen what a chipped FC Bonnet and a damaged windscreen looks like? I have - a mate of mind has one on his S14, going at highspeeds and the thing flipped up and smashed his windscreen - both look like an earthquake's hit them... I might even stay stock... don't know yet.

Let me know how you go...

Mine originally had the carbon fibre finish but I had it painted as wanted to car to looker cleaner rather than JDM[ The painter said it was a nightmare of a job and he would never do another one again. He found it hard for the paint to seal due to the texture of the bonnet but it turned out looking pretty good and I think the vents tend to stand out more than they did originally.attachment=164511:Picture_007.jpg]

that bonnet looks tidy....yeah well about the vents showing out more, that is what i wanted...as i have a 400r front bar, and the holes in it stand out alot more than they do on a black one...

If anyone has a pic of a front 400r with a vented bonnet, it'd be appreciated if you could post it up.

And bonnet pins? how do they work, would i need to get them if the bonnet was fibreglass?

  • 2 weeks later...

there was a thread mentioning the legalities of CF vs FG and it was said CF is illegal due to splintering and the FG were OK but also mentioned was actual safety approval...

I bet I can find other illegal things on most of our cars anyways...
