Its a no contest for me.

Natto is the most vile putrid food known to man. Not only does it make you dry retch when tasting it, it smells like pus and has the consistency of facehugger slime from aliens.

Fav food would have to be all types of ramen - a no brainer - plus any type suki yaki and shabu shabu. I cant go past miso soup - to think that its made from the same stuff natto is made from...

Two things that puzzle the hell out of me spring to mind.

Firstly why do Izakaya insist on serving you a little bowl of slime as an entree when you arrive and have not asked for then charge you at the end and secondly the concept of "sweets" here is still very weird to me.

Post em up peeps.

I think the izakaya thing is like a way to slug people who just go there to drink and don't order food. so they bring you the pickles and charge a 'service charge'. they want people to order food and drinks but I guess plenty of people just go there to get hammered as the drinks are often cheaper than bars. since they aren't making that much from the cheap drinks they charge you the service charge since you are taking up space that someone could be sitting in and ordering food instead of glass after glass of lime chu hi. think of it as rent. the fact they give you pickles is just the japanese way to cover up this tax and give you something in return.

I love so many japanese foods and have lots of favourites.

karage (chicked of course, but fugu karage is good too! albeit quite rare)

pork katsu karee

love ramen too (shio ramen, negi ramen, chashu ramen, miso ramen they are all good), need to get the tamago in there too, it's not complete without it.

love shabu-shabu, suki yaki is good too

oh, one of my top favourites, yaki niku. i've had some awesome yaki niku over the years and it beats out shabu shabu in my eyes

okonomiyaki (love it. definately favour hiroshima style over osaka style.)

takoyaki, so nice when it's hot and fresh

Oden is good for something different (and I'm not talking about the stuff you get at 7-11 when you are pissed, that doesn't count! all it does is stink up the joint)

I love sushi, and it's one thing that you can get in sydney just as good as in japan

I love yakitori and most of the small snack type dishes you buy at an izakaya

I also love japanese snacks, otsumami. love the little banana shaped things that come with peanuts and are just a little spicy. wasabi flavour chips are good too, and soy snacks

I know it's not really japanese food as such, but I love MOS Burger. MOS cheese burger, and the regular Chese burger are great. I even like their hotdogs!

Terriyaki burger at maccas and ebi-filet o are nice too if you are smashed

that's all I could think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there is more!

I agree japanese sweets are vastly different from our tastes.

on the negative side i'm not a big fan of some of the dried fish snacks, I can't remember the name but they are dirty. also going on from my comment above I'm not a fan of the combini oden. unless you are drunk..... in that case all bets are off and you can load up that little plastic cup with some cognac, some vermicelli, some tamago and maybe some chicken if they have it, and don't forget to spoon in lots of the fetid broth it's been sitting in since last week.

oh, I do like the pork katsu sandwhiches. you can get the cheap ones at train stations or if you are feeling fancy go for the 2,000yen version from the nearest mitsukoshi which comes in a nice gift wrapped wooden box. lol, japan, the only country in the world where you can get a $20 gift wrapped sandwhich. they go down well with a big can of beer on those long train rides...

speaking of mitsukoshi in lots of the department stores they have nice biscuit like snacks, I like the ones with a kind of cream in the middle and sultanas.

oh, and japanese strawberries are top shelf too.

japanese rice snacks are the bomb too, and really hard to get good ones in aus. you can get some imitations but they are really bland and all taste the same.

as you can see I love japanese food, and I'll try anything, anytime.

oh dude, I hope that's on the fail list. :( wagamama is about as far from real, good japanese food as you can get. I mean, they sell duck gyoza FFS!!! duck gyoza i tells ya.

oh, that's another for my 'likes' list. gyoza. very nice. hard to get good ones in aus though.

edit: just saw the second post, I need to take you to a real japanese restaurant. the crap they sell at wagamana is not real gyoza. it's a half baked 'fusion' restraurant chain started by english wankers who know FA about good japanese food. real gyoza will blow you away after the rubbish they sell.

I just remembered another favourite. tempura. love it.

when i came back to oz this year and saw a shop called wagamama i started laughing! then my girl started laughing then we both got confused. because the japanese means selfish.

Ramen is technically chinese food no ? the same with gyoza ... ! so its out of this question

my fav japanese food is home cooked nabe and hiroshima style okonomiyaki

oh and yaki niku is classified as korean bbq no ? so its not included too :ermm:

What about soup curry..supposedly the Japanese invented it..wells thats what they keep saying..

Japanese yaki niku is heaps different from Korean..its Korean style BBQ...trust me, my misso's Korean and I've had both and real different..Korean style suaces are real hot....but hey you cant beat a 120 min all you can eat and drink yaki niku for 2500 yen..I love nomi tabi hodai!!

Baron...classic Jingis kan in Hokkaido is the Kirin Brewery in Sapporo...nomi tabi..bloody delicious and the beers good too!

Well take tempura off the list, cause it comes from Portugal/Spain.

and look up 'History of Sushi' on wikipedia, and take it off the list while you're at it.

if we go back far enough, all food comes from (insert creation belief here), right?

a process that can probably be traced back to seafood-preserving methods used in China and South-East Asia

- from same article

is a fast food invented by Hanaya Yohei (華屋与兵衛; 1799 - 1858) at the end of Edo period

id say this is proof enough that sushi is a proper Japanese dish

Nice....Daiei just opened the first izakaya in Melbourne here....pretty good food, too.

I just spotted a ritzy Italian restaurant on the Parade in Adelaide called Gusto. Ha, ritzy, ha. Wonder if their drink bar is ¥350 as well.........

    • sold listed as a Tomei LSD 1.5 Way For 1998+ Nissan Skyline ER34 25GT RB25DE w/Open R200 https://www.ebay.com/itm/174006114594?campid=5338967980&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&toolid=10050&customid=&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&loc_physical_ms=108689&loc_interest_ms=&campid=5338967980&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&toolid=10050&customid=71883f2ccc571356e0a757bc7adfdde2&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&loc_physical_ms=108689&loc_interest_ms= it went in like butter all gears, alignment, back lash etc, rotation and clearances correct, and if rolling all rotates smooth and free when coasting down road , clutch in or out over 10 mph smooth... its the binding, clunking and jerking from a stop that is most concerning, also seems like its going to tear the tires off in 10 miles of normal road driving.
    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
